I assure you Jobs wouldn't have been into the idea of having an iPad that dual-boots. He set them up as two different platforms in the first place.

He could've done a tablet Mac. He didn't.
Yeah, and to add to that, many people say that Steve Jobs felt this way about the iPad.
“This will be the most important thing I’ve ever done.”

And that’s AFTER saying this before he returned to Apple.
“If I were running Apple, I would milk the Macintosh for all it's worth – and get busy on the next great thing. The PC wars are over. Done. Microsoft won a long time ago.”

If he thought the iPad was “the most important thing” he’d done, one could say, ‘the next great thing’, the Mac might be in an entirely different place under Steve :)

For me one important feature is shared photo library.
I won’t be able to use it on iPhone as I won’t be able to access the photos on my iPad till 16.1 comes out….

They did not go the route of iOS 12.1 FaceTime with up to 32 people but it seems like they will be doing an iOS 13.0 then release iOS 13.1 about a week later...

Should have released iPadOS 16.0 as it is then Stage Manager on iPadOS 16.1 or whenever it is ready...
Having a hard time thinking of anything in iPadOS 16 that’s actually new except for stage manager.

Compatibility with the new iMessage features is all I can think of. Gonna be an awkward month or so if you use iMessage on iPad a lot.

Yes but that second quote was in the context of the 90s. Microsoft is not as dominant anymore. And people still need a full computer platform for doing work. The iPad is still not a replacement for all those Windows PCs out there.

You say “Microsoft is not as dominant anymore” then say “all those Windows PC’s out there” :) Anyway, the iPad is not expected to be a replacement for Windows PC’s. As Steve said, “Microsoft won a long time ago.” The iPad IS consistently outselling the Mac, though. It won’t be a replacement for ALL Macs either, but for those with limited use cases, they may find the “always online” and “touch interface” parts of it compelling enough to never buy a Mac.

Yes, but neither are "PCs" (in the sense of macOS and Windows).

The dominant form of computing is the phone now. For hundreds of millions of people, it's the only computer they have.

And people still need a full computer platform for doing work. The iPad is still not a replacement for all those Windows PCs out there.

The iPad does "real work" for most trades.

There are a lot out of there but many of them are ripe for replacement and a Mac is a better option than ever. I don’t realistically expects Macs or iPads to replace those PCs, I’m just saying they shouldn’t give up on the Mac because of it. The PC space isn’t dead and though Microsoft is still dominant they aren’t the absolute unassailable juggernaut assassin they used to be.

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there on the last part.

I do understand that many people only have a phone. Personally I don’t understand how they get through life without a computer or at least a bigger screen and keyboard.

I’m just saying the “computer” is still a very necessary thing if only to build the handsets. Apple even said as much when introducing the M1, “all these amazing things we create are created on the Mac.”

Nobody is denying that. "Building handsets" is not "most trades".

No but it's a good example of the type of work that can only be practically done with a large screen, keyboard, input besides touch, and all the other traditional niceties of the computer.

Perhaps you're thinking more of what Microsoft likes to call "front line workers" that are constantly on the move and only need to look up and input a limited set of information. The iPad is a great improvement there. I'm not denying that there are millions of those people.

My only point is that there are also still millions of people who need a proper computer and that I don't see that changing any time soon. And also that Apple shouldn't just abandon those people to Microsoft and Google.

They aren't. Why do you think M1 Pro, Max, Ultra exist?

To power Apple's devices. Those don't have to be Macs. The original quote was that the PC wars are over and Microsoft won. The original post talked about milking the Mac and moving on. My point is that I don't think they should do that. Maybe we actually agree.

So we learn a 4th generation iPad Pro purchased new from an Apple Store for over $1000, less than 18 months ago won’t be able to run iPad OS 16 fully. Apple is taking planned obsolescence to warp speed with iPad OS. Hope whoever is in charge of the train wreck that is iPad OS gets replaced soon.

I say buy a new iPad from Apple, see how poorly engineered Stage Manager is, then return the iPad within 2 weeks for a full refund. Trust me, stage manager won’t be worthwhile for at least another major OS update.

I concur. My iPad Pro supports Stage Manager. I used it for about two minutes before I abandoned it. The existing multitasking is better, and that’s saying something.

I’m in the camp that says they’ll release Stage Manager and will slowly fade it away and never speak of it again.

Absolutely a case of bemoaning something just because it’s just something to bemoan. :) At this point, and I’ve tried a few times with this beta, not only does Stage Manager not work very well, but in preparation for it to work, they’ve caused some of the current multitasking features to fail. Right now, that 4th G on iOS 15 even does slide over better and more consistently than my “Stage Manager enabled” iPad Pro.

I have given up on the beta and stage manager. I sent in my bug reports (mostly crashes) and concerns/recommendations about how things don’t seem to be working well…never heard back from Apple. Could be just they haven’t replied yet, I once got a reply back on a bug report that I had submitted 2 years prior! Anyhow, I agree that you start to appreciate slideover and side-by-side once you attempt to deal with the numerous shortcomings of stage manager. The potential is there, but this iteration is monumentally flawed it its execution.
