Oh no.. my MBA 2012 is no longer supported.. :-(

Now it kinda sucks.. buy a (soon to be old) Intel Macbook or wait for the ones with ARM (which future is unknown too....).

Yawn! There, someone had to say it!

I laughed aloud when Craig Federighi showed off the “brand new” icons and redesign! Looked indistinguishable from the same old, same old. These OS upgrades are a solution in search of a problem. In fact, they typically introduce problems — and break apps!

Why not fix all the bugs — and go back to the basics — resurrect the Human Interface Guidelines and ensure consistency, logical functionality, and transparency throughout the system, the apps, etc.?

Now that would be an upgrade I'd jump at.

I suppose there'll be a greater commonality between iOS 14 and Big Sur, but within both there's incredible inconsistency across apps, even Apple's own, and issues in the interface, hidden controls one has to guess at, and even Windows x's for close boxes!

The repositioning of the Reply-Forward button in iOS Mail away from the other controls is still downright bizarre and illogical; as is the requirement to press and hold to get the Reader in Safari. Press and hold should bring up options, a single tap should be the direct action as it is elsewhere. So, mirroring iOS isn't so smart, either!

Oh, well! Bring back Jobs and “one more thing”!

I agree mostly, yawn (Extremely boring) most of the keynote, up until they announced Apple silicon, now, that gets me exited.

Crap, that's what it is, my Macs don't support BS, selling them would be my preference, but then????
Don't want to buy another Intel Mac since that will be supported for a limited time, so, in a way...stuck.

:(... my MacBook still has a black&white screen and Motorola processor and is not supported for Big Sur. How is that possible, why can't Apple just bring my device into the supported platform, it does not have to be that quick (as long as I don't have to wait and all features just work)! I did not ask for progress!!

I guess that apple will maintain support for intel macs for some years to come as those who bought the 2019 macpros have spent a fortune on them. Well, just a guess.

Well the gent in the state of the union just said macOS is staying UNIX. Can’t ask for more than that.

“macs are staying macs”

I still have not heard the words BootCamp or anything to speak to those that need to dual-boot Windows... seems like the focus is almost entirely on making the Mac a better gaming system. The Adobe software they're showing off has already been "ported" to iOS/iPadOS. Until Adobe has full versions of Premiere, After Effects, and Media Encoder running for Apple Silicon, it's going to be a really long transition with few "pros" making the switch.

Am curious - does the DTK have fully functional TB3?

Bummed that this is the end of the road for the mid-2012 non retina mbp. Got more support than I expected. I think I'm jumping on the Apple Silicon bandwagon early.

According to this new article, no TB3 support.

On the hardware side, participants will receive exclusive access to a Developer Transition Kit (DTK), which resembles a Mac mini but uses Apple's A12Z Bionic chip from the latest iPad Pro as its brains. In addition to the A12Z Bionic, the DTK includes 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a pair of 10 Gbps USB-C ports, a pair of 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and an HDMI 2.0 port. Thunderbolt 3 support is not included.

On the communications side, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and Gigabit Ethernet are also supported. An FCC filing for the DTK reveals that it carries an Apple model number of A2330, which was the lone new Mac model number that appeared in the Eurasian Economic Commission's database earlier this month.

Notably, the DTK remains the property of Apple and must be returned at the conclusion of the program. Participants must also agree to a number of restrictions against tearing the machine down, using it for work other than development related to the program, or renting or leasing it out.

Apple invited me by email to join the Beta test of the new macOS. It was not very reassuring. They literally called it BUG SUR. Yep. Bug.

Did anyone else notice the boot chime when they announced Big Sur? Will someone let us know if they're put it back in? I have it re-enabled on my 16" MBP running Catalina.

I did catch the boot chime during the announcement. My 2020 MBP is in the process of installing Bug Sur (haha couldn’t resist) and it has rebooted several times. Each time it has rebooted it has chimed. Like the good old days. 👍🏻

can someone link to info of them dropping nvidia support?

i mean my mac can be updated, but that would mean that the dedicated graphics card would no longer be used. so that's a big decision to make.

Install is not working for me. I just got into developing so not a pro.
Bought a MBA specifically for this reason

It says it needs 32Gb to signal but I only have 18 available.
When I look into my system info, it says 72/121 available. And 57 of that is pictures which are set to "optimize Mac storage".

Anybody got a workaround?
If there is not enough space, why won't the Mac just delete pics? They are still on iCloud??

My 2019 MacBook Air does not have the space to install this update.

Ironically, the 9GB of space currently being taken up by the installer is what I need.

I got it installed. I think the icons will grow on me, but the big round corners and wide menu spacing are making me feel like I just switched from Lego to Duplo blocks. The new progress circle (NSProgressIndicator) is clunky-looking with with donut style. I think I might just keep 10.14 a few more years and retire from the software development business.

I liked System 6.0.3, 8.6, 10.6.8 and 10.14.6

Is voice control still there? Is it better that last time?
