I have confirmed that Safari now supports playback of 4K.
To your question (highlighted above) - I have IINA; so if you guide me how to test VP9 support; I could do that for you...

Drag and drop a 4k YouTube video URL onto IINA

I believe if you see videotoolbox being used either in activity monitor or within iina (Cmd + i) that should show it!

that being said IINA may not be updated for this yet

If videotoolbox is being used by safari during playback that should show OS level support for hardware acceleration

Safari love forever, still the best part of the Apple Big Sur presentation. (yes, over iMessages).

Also in the want ARM MacBook next club before getting out of 2017.

"Today's beta adds 4K support for YouTube videos in Safari". I hope google stops blocking it as well

There's still no reason we need random 3-D effects back in the OS. Someone needs to flatten out that battery.

You can still enjoy them sobbing about the lack of 8K ;)
Can you even play a 8K@60hz video on Macs decently in Youtube via Firefox as a comparison? Software decodes really eat up a CPU processing. ;)

I would be curious to compare CPU usage playing the same content between Safari 14.0 and Firefox 79.0.

Yes, but it runs pretty hot on my MBP 16 5500m, the real test is running 4k HDR, as it drop frame like crazy.

What I’m really looking forward to is an article that has the word combinations “Big Sur”, “public beta” and “now available” in its title.
Ideally in that sequence.

“macOS Big Sur public beta delayed until 2021, page for complaints against Apple now available on macrumors.com.” :p

Anyone else notice that the fan is running exceptionally loud? KernelManagerD seems to be the culprit? I haven't experienced this on other betas.... MBP 2018 16G Ram i9

No. thanks. I've been sick of flat design ever since iOS 7 and OS X Yosemite. We've been flat longer than we've been skeuomorphic. I'm welcoming the latter's return. Design exists in cycles anyway. Skeuo would have catapulted us into the holographic by now if not for us regressing back to the days of Amiga Workbench and Tandy Deskmate.
