Just wondering if updating to El Capitan requires having Yosemite, or if you can update from previous OS, like Snow Leopard?

Took 20 minutes to install.

Also it beeped like it was doing a EFI firmware update and then preceded to take a couple of minutes to go through that process. wtf ?

Does that mean 10.11 can be upgraded from 10.4? The 2007 Macs that still are supported came out with 10.4. IIRC, 10.8 removed the ability to migrate data/settings from 10.4, but I could be wrong in that respect.

Sorry, I din't think that far back.. I guess you'd have to purchase OS X 10.6 or later on disk (don't know if you still can..), since you need the Mac App Store to upgrade to all versions from 10.8 and up..

"[...] Starting with Mountain Lion Apple software updates (including the OS) are distributed via the App Store.[...]" (Wikipedia)

"[...] OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" was released on October 22, 2013. This is a free upgrade to all users running OS X Snow Leopard or later [...]" (Wikipedia)

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guessing that if you try to update 10.4 with a USB installer of 10.11, you'd only get the option of a clean install?

I keep switching back and using Yosemite, after every time I play with a new 10.11 build, simply because I do not like the mouse pointer behavior in El Capitan -- and I have found no way to turn the "shake zoom" off for good, I don't like it at all, and it's so annoying I can't stand to use 10.11 for very long. I hope somebody knows a fix, and can help!!

The feature may be useful for a laptop user, but not a 27" iMac user with a laser mouse!

I'm sure someone will come up with a terminal command to get rid of that at some point.

Looks like they added saved passwords to terminal:

Doesn't seem to work atm though.

Every build of os x since 10.10.2 (including all the betas) have come with firmware updates. So I'm not worried or surprised about there being a firmware update. It is more of a problem if it doesn't install.

I'm back using Yosemite, and will stay here. I don't like that cursor zoom at all, it is super-annoying! I barely shake my mouse and it looks like my cursor is doing Super Mario mushrooms. It's so bad I can't use the OS. Total flop. i will pass for now (unless somebody has a fix to disable the feature, which would be awesome!!)

This comment on Macrumors story is misleading:

"OS X 10.11 El Capitan is available to both registered developers and public beta testers."

BE SPECIFIC.

DP1, DP2, DP3, DP4 are available to developers. ONLY PB1 IS AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC BETA TESTERS. NOT DP4. THERE IS NO PB2 YET.

There has to be some incentive for paying $99/year to be a developer -- you get first acesss to all pre-release software. Public beta testing is free and open to anyone. I'm sure DP4 will be made into PB2 and available later this week, or next week.

El Capitan is available to both. May be that Devs and PBs get different updates however.

Well, I am one of those that actually loves Yosemite, and it's fast, snappy, quick, and responsive on my end, I have no problem with lags or slowdowns in Yosemite. Run into tons of problems with El Capitan - even icons don't show up right, compatibility problems, amd some of my apps (Adobe Dreamweaver) do not even work! So, I am pretty much happy where I am at with Yosemite and would be fine to stay here, because the new OS doesn't do that much for me, to be honest...

Yes. Developers get more builds and not necessarily (and probably not) on the same day as public beta testers get theirs.

The lack of three finger drag in the trackpad settings almost had me switching back on previous betas until I thought to check in accessibility.

Surely there will be a way to disable the cursor zoom, we just haven't found it yet. And hey, this is what the feedback tool is for!

safari and mail still lag when scrolling. submitted feedback. Otherwise, seems pretty good. But really, they need to fix the rest of these scrolling issues before release. safari and mail on my iphone are much smoother, sadly.
