I think the 2.0.1 update will come in August, with several bug fixes. The 2.1 update will come in September, with a few new features. That would explain whey we have seen 2.0.1 in the wild and 2.1. Odd that they would jump straight to 2.1, but perhaps they are ramping up the development cycle for the iPhone since it is starting to take off and generate them a lot more cash. Either that or they realized they are only going to upgrade the iPhone software every summer, so 3.0 by next July, and they can safely use a new point version every time since the last firmware only got up to 1.1.4.

What I think is really cool is you can now use the phone while it is syncing! ill look through it more find some new features and post some pics

i hope 2.1 (aka 2.0.1???) will get the bluetooth stack that allows us iphone 2G owners to pair with our external bluetooth GPS!!!

apple, let me decide if i want to drain my battery and when i need my GPS! i hope apple listens and gives us the right to get GPS running with the "old" iphone 2G....

c'mon apple, this would be so easy for you guys!!!

mm guise cmmon guise umm cmmon guise?

p.s. what the hell are you smoking

Ah nevermind it's just when installing apps from itunes while hooked to your computer but it's still cool.

I don't know how to get the push thing working for apps

Is 2.1 any faster, does it lag???? How about the turn by turn GPS in Maps??? Is it working??? I would love to see that new EDGE symbol! :p

Hmm I hear that only developer's apps work on 2.1, not apps you downloaded from the app store. So I wouldn't suggest this for normal use if you somehow get your hands on it.

contacts

What about the most basic mobile phone feature....to be able to forward a contact to another phone! Yes, i know that would mean having "proper" bluetooth, but not being able to forward via SMS??! Come on apple!

i was just digging around the frameworks in my iPhone tonight. I have come across some pretty neat new stuff. First of which, Cut and Paste. Deep inside System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit.framework lies Localizable.strings under English.lproj. I used PlistEditPro to open the file and there we go. I already saw a couple new commands right when i opened it. If you wanna check for yourself, go ahead.

A couple new features i see are:

Plugins
Check spelling
Check spelling as you type/while you type
Choose File
Copy
Paste
Cut
Copy Image
Copy Link
Download Image (which is already known to everyone by now)
Learn Spelling
Look up in dictionary
Search in spotlight (?)
Start Speaking/Stop speaking (this ones interesting)
Upload file

plus about like 50 more, some new some we already know.

There you go guys. I hope this stuff actually is coming to future updates (2.0.1 ?) when they decide to activate all of the features. I hope this is real, not just my mind playing tricks with me. haha

Oh and some more digging found some MobileRadio preferences. I'll look more into that later.

ipod touch users..

Would you stop complaining about the updates costing money? You bought your iPods for the features they had and you were perfectly happy about them when you handed over the money.

Seriously, would you want Apple to just release a new touch every time, when they add new software features? Like it was before the iTouch/iPhone? I'd much rather pay freaking $9.95 for each of them than buy a new device..

I can't wait for turn by turn nav. That would be so great. The push notification will be awsome. Then you won't need a sms plan you will just be able to use AIM for texting.

yes on all counts. still cant see the downloads o.o

Give it 12 hours, if you're still having problems make sure to fire off an e-mail to the dev relations asking what's up. They could be doing a staged rollout so as not to overload servers, the new SDK is 1.4GB plus 240MB per device firmware.

If I install 2.1 on my iPhone 3G will everything still work, phone, sms, mail, safari, etc? I don't want to install it and then brick my iPhone. I got accepted into the Dev program and paid the $99. Will I be able to install 2.1 on my iPhone 3G and my 1st gen iPhone, or is it limited to one iPhone? Will it mess up my iPhone 3G? Thanks n advance.

Also do I need to download the iPhone SDK (build 9M2199a) to use 2.1?

I would think people want stability before new features after all, current touted features barely work properly

new features would be nice, but i agree that stability should be paramount. like why does it take so long to backup prior to syncing?

as for turn-by-turn, it wouldn't be terribly useful unless one could access maps without having to rely on google maps and having a cell connection. i can access gps signals almost anywhere, but cell networks are much sparse. i'd hate to be out in the middle of nowhere, needing directions, but with no cell service i'm out of luck.

i'm sure the companies working on turn-by-turn gps will have maps that can be downloaded onto the phone, thereby obviating the need for a cell network while in the boonies somewhere...

Will people install this on their main iPhone, or is it not meant to be used on an iPhone you use every day? I'm new to the developer side of things, I got accepted into the iPhone Developer Program a few days ago and paid the $99.

I just wanted to ask the experts here if it's safe to install on your main iPhone?

Thanks in advance:)
