If you were relying on the iPhone for turn-by-turn while driving and someone called then what? Remember it's main function is a phone and there are lots of things you want to do while using the phone.. thus, you shouldn't look ti the iPhone for EVERYTHING because it isn't practical to overload the uses of a phone. I think that's why it is almost a sure thing that Apple's mystery product comming up is a 1.5x sized iPhone so you can use all the really nice apps being developed and have the phone responsibilities separate.

Orly?

Yeah... personally, I have a problem accepting that line of thought.. I feel like apple has done all this work with the iphone and ipod touch and the SDK, and all their developers, that they would be foolish to introduce a different size decvice that ran the iphone version of OS X.

Imagine having to either get the right size version of the app for your device, or having apps blown up out of proportion and looking grainy on a device larger than the iphone.. yuck. I believe this is also why there won't be an "iphone nano". Different resolutions mean a lot more work has to be put into making and distributing the apps on apple's part, and then more effort on the user to find the right version of the app for their device, as well as hoping it's written for all devices (iphone, iphone nanp, itablet, etc ) and that's just a real pain.

If there is a tablet like device comming, and I doubt it, then I would put my money on it running full blown OS X Leopard rather than the iphone version of OS X.

Will a software update be able to increase battery life? Because that's much more of a problem than lagging for me. I'm tired of having to charge my phone twice a day.

...Not going to happen. How about a 2nd button on laptops? Not going to happen. Apple is stubborn. And that's not good.

Why do we want an ugly second button on our laptops when two fingers and click works just fine, if not better?

how long after seeds do the versions become ready for us? on average? having the text issue in SMS is SO MUCH of a pain. Killing the app and reopening it does not even fix it anymore eeek

Mostly speculation on my part, but backed by some historical data:

Look for Apple to charge 3G owners for the 2.1 upgrade.

becuase of Sarbanes-Oxley, Apple has had to charge for upgrades that introduce new functionality, except for the original iPhone, where you were "under contract" with them.

Well, the 3G is now just like the Touch - you buy it from Apple, and you're getting the funcitonality delivered. Period. They can't introduce new stuff without running afoul of SOx (thank you Enron).

Of course, "bug fix only" releases are fine to release as free.... so do look for a 2.0.1 and beyond.

Again - just speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised at all...

Adding Copy/Paste or MMS would shut so many people up...

I really wonder what will be the best way to implement copy/paste? There was that one video that came out a while back, but frankly I don't think that was a very good implementation.

I guess (a) the ability to highlight text, and still be able to bring up the loupe, somehow, (b) the ability to copy that text, maybe with a gesture or two finger click, and (c) the ability to paste text where ever.

Nah, I disagree. They won't charge iPhone owners anything ever. iPod Touch on the other hand, yes... but not for something as simple as 2.1. Maybe 3.0.

Isn't varying screen sizes and resolutions something software developers are very familiar with (ie. the computer industry for the last 20 years). I think they could handle it.

I can't remember the reason why they charge for the updates. hanging my head in shame.

There's a law that doesn't allow free added features to devices where the accounting policy accounts the entire thing at one time as opposed to say Apple TV and the iPhone which accounts over the span of two years. Now bug fixes and stuff are free, since obviously they're bugs.

New iPhone SDK?? I thought that the official SDK was published!!

Ummm, how will the developers implement push if it doesn't exist in the current SDK?

I really wonder what will be the best way to implement copy/paste? There was that one video that came out a while back, but frankly I don't think that was a very good implementation.

The movie was actually wrong...they said magnifying glass then second finger tap. Selection mode comes up. The problem is that when they went to paste the text, the magnifying glass and then second tap DIDN'T bring up selection mode...instead it brought up the clipboard to paste...inconsistency...how will it know whether you wanted to paste your already copied text or you wanted to recopy something?

I submitted my idea for copy and paste to Apple :/. Simply magnifying glass like normal, now put down your second finger and drag to select. After you lift both fingers up, ActionSheet asks if you want to copy or cancel (or paste if you have something in the clipboard). So when you go to paste, you can actually replace a section of text by magnifying glass, then drag with second finger. Release and the ActionSheet pops up asking if you wanted to copy, paste, or cancel.

You guys are on drugs if you think there are going to be major features like this included in a .0.1 update.

Yes, yes I am, but that's beside the point--anyway, this is a 0.1 update, so it should have at least some significant difference in features. Unfortunately, it seems the only new features are ones that I am least interested in: GPS-related features. I really don't want my phone to be able to tell the world exactly where I am, where I am going and what I am doing at any moment...all these intimate GPS tie-ins are getting a little creepy for my taste. How about some bug fixes and optimization before adding more total information awareness? Copy and paste would be cool, but it seems like it would be very hard to implement. It is easier with pen-based PDAs as the precision of the digitizer is higher (but this precision comes at the inconvenience of needing two hands and an easily-lost pen to use the device); considering how hard it is to even get the magnifying glass in the right position to place the cursor, I can't see copying and pasting being easy to implement.

How about a real note-taking application? You know, one that didn't suck and could sync documents back to a desktop (TXT from phone to desktop and maybe PDF from desktop to phone)? I realize that this would require some kind of honest-to-god file transfer capability and that goes against Apple's 'black box' model of iPhone development and I am not suggesting that they adopt the Windows CE philosophy of trying to shoehorn a full desktop app into an itty-bitty screen, but it would be really useful to be able to read papers / books / documents on the iPhone. I find it sad that the App Store doesn't have any applications that do this. Is it against Apple's developer contract or something to have files and documents uploaded to the iphone?

My sympathies go out to all the iPod Touch owners out there: it is illegal to write a software update and not charge people for it if the update adds any new feature? That sounds like a big old steaming pile of bullsh*t to me. If this is true, then significant operating system service packs would be illegal.

Apple is working on resolution independence for Snow Leopard. Since the iPhone is based on OS X, many of these technologies would likely trickle down. Same for tablet device.

The iPhone is handled differently in Apple's accounting, over a rolling period, so updates are free. The Touch isn't. That is the key difference. Also, all updates until 2.0 have been free for the Touch. The only paid updates were for the addition of the iPhone suite of applications--such as maps, mail, weather, etc.

I just want 3G reception fixed!

Other updates look good though. Hopefully 2.0.1 fixes 3G

I have worse reception on 2g (or whatever) networks when I turn off 3g than I did on my old iPhone. When 3g is on I have much better coverage and quality audio. Its really weird.

blueooth GPS capabilities in 2.1???

i hope 2.1 (aka 2.0.1???) will get the bluetooth stack that allows us iphone 2G owners to pair with our external bluetooth GPS!!!

apple, let me decide if i want to drain my battery and when i need my GPS! i hope apple listens and gives us the right to get GPS running with the "old" iphone 2G....

c'mon apple, this would be so easy for you guys!!!

since the 2.0 update was a bummer in that regard i hope apple really gives a damn....

Apple countering the Hacking community by leaving out simple fxns?

How about let us pick the sounds for text messages, not the lame apple sounds that are included

you got mail motha fcka a la eurotrip would work for me.. of course if someone could get me a clip for "you got TXT motha fcka" that'd be greatly appreciated :)

Is anyone getting the idea that Apple is releasing these simple things in their future firmware upgrades just to counter the hacking community? I mean, who really only uses "Assisted" gps? pretty weak that they were advertising that in the first place? Why didn't Apple just include turn-by-turn GPS in the first place (not difficult, considering other phones already have them)? It seems like Apple/ATT's best way of countering the hacking community is by leaving out these simple and essential functions and release them one by one on their list, when a team like pwnage unlocks the phone, when really they've already got it all done. It sounds very realistic that once pwnage or someone else hacks 2.1 that they will release Copy/Paste or something like that. Part of their things "down on the list" they've talked about so much (really a dumb reason at face value, but now it seems smart). That way, it almost forces people to upgrade the firmware for mundane albeit extremely helpful, and stick it right to the hacking community.
