Apple Seeds iPhone Firmware 2.2 Beta 1

@Prof

I hope this isn't a stupid Q but... Will apple continue to release updates for the first gen iPod touch even tho the second gen is out? Or will the stop releasing updates for it like they do all the other iPods?

I hope it is not under the NDA when I tell you that there is a beta version for the 1st Gen. iPod touch.

apparently mobile safari is different

people complain there are problems with the phone so apple releases updates to fix them and improve the phone. then people complain that there are too many updates. just a bunch of board babies, always crying and whining about something.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

I wonder what the hold up is on the background notifications. I guess it isn't working the way that Apple initially thought.

I think they are just trying to get all of the kinks worked out. The initial release of the 2.0 firmware with the new iPhone was a big rocky to say the least.

Interesting. All I really noticed was how the Google bar is now visible when at the top of the screen, as opposed to just the address bar.

I would like to see them incorporate search (on all Safari platforms) directly into the URL bar, but I guess that would be considered a copy of "Chrome" (who actually isn't the first to do that).

anyone wondered

Has anyone wondered that maybe the last update was a secret test of the background push notification.

Seeing as the update said increased battery life for some users. Maybe the updates given were random and some of them had background testing going on, and the others did not. Thus why some users have worse and some have better.

I for one have noticed a huge increase in battery life. BUT I also noticed that lots of people have had a huge lack of increase and it has gotten worse.

I think Jobs is testing the background notification on some iPhone users and seeing how it is going to impact the battery life before they send out the full 2.2 update. They cant do proper testing on just their group, they need a huge margin of people to test it on. So why not release it to half, and the other half gets the normal update.

Thats what I think took place. And I am thinking this new update will include the push notification and will also improve battery life for all.

Eek! ugly, i get that they're trying to get it to look like other browsers (google search on the right) but it looks majorly weird

Speaking of firmware updates weren't we meant to get 2.1.1 or something like the Touches did?

I'm glad that Apple is continuing to "push" forward with these updates (pun intended...:D), and will (hopefully) be delivering new functionality shortly. This could be either push technology, copy & paste, or other new functionality.

The 2.1 update cured a lot of what ailed me since 2.0 came out, but it's still not perfect. For example, I'm still seeing more crashes than I did with the 1.x version of the iPhone software, but not as many as with 2.0.

Here's to 2.2 being another solid step in the right direction. ;)

Finally, IM clients might become useful...also, based on the implementation of copy/paste we've seen...perhaps this could permit for that as well?

Looks as though Push Notification is releasing under 2.1.1. A beta 1 release of 2.2 won't go Golden Master for at least a month.

Here's hoping

Definitely would love to see push. It's more than just messages- application updates and the rest.

Also want turn by turn directions GPS.

Also would like to see some more solid integration with mobile me- perhaps eventually a mobile version of some of the ilife apps.

Back to my mac and idisk native apps- please!

Remember, Apple released 2.1 beta, then released 2.0.1, then released 2.1. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2.1.1 release before 2.2.

Im just down for getting apps to work after you close them, i.e. AIM. it would be nice to get a prompt to ask if you want to close it or not.

for example your talking on aim and you get a text you have to close the AIM app just to text back to someone. I know they dont keep background programs running to save battery life and processing speed, but it would be nice to keep some of them running if asked. thats ALL i ask, just ASK us if we want to close it.

also has anyone else had problems with apps, anything even text, to take a little bit to open?

The ONLY reason for this 2.2 news is to counter attack Android. You WILL see copy and paste along with a few more toys.

do you reckon that they will add the squirrelfish javascript engine to mobilesafari?

plus a way to connect your youtube login to the youtube app would be nice. it is annoying having to go through safari to get your favourites

and of course... PUT PUSH NOTIFICATIONS IN!!!!

And.... I hope I dont violate it by telling you that there is NO 2nd gen touch beta, just: iphone1,2,2 - iphone2,2,2 - touch1,2,2

why do they rls new firmwares every month??? its too muchh

Every month? It's more like every 2-3 weeks.

I feel they do this as part of the cat and mouse game with the jailbreaking community. They wave one new, shiny feature per update in front of you so that you'll feel you have to upgrade your jailbroken phone to the new firmware and un-jailbreak it. The Dev team then is busy for a day working on the new jailbreak rather than unlocking the baseband.

Maybe Apple feels that if they do it enough people will get fed up spending the extra time jailbreaking and redoing all of their Cydia/Installer apps/settings. (plus redoing the mobile install hack then re-installing their cracked apps from the app store).

Push notifications;
Copy&Paste;
Bluetooth file-transfer;
MMS;
TbT GPS!

Release that on 2.2 and you'll have a lot of happy customers, Apple!

First I thought the Copy & Paste isn't really necessary. But dang, the other day I had to send my friend my other friend phone number while my girlfriend was being very annoying (saying random numbers continuously to me). I now want it to more than anything.

Oh.

Gmail Push would be extremely nice. I really am dying for that.

There are two things I'd REALLY like to see:

* Mobile Safari to save usernames+passwords for websites, I hate having to enter those each and every time

* An option in Maps to toggle between car navigation and pedestrian navigation, like you can do in the Google Maps web app now. It would be perfect to get directions to go somewhere BY FOOT with the iPhone in my hand :)
