Cisco VPN in new beta

All -

I haven't seen anything on this, so I thought I'd ask...

I am at a University that requires the Cisco VPN client to access their wireless network, therefore I cannot access this network with my iPhone (OS 1.1.4).

Will iPhone users be able to use the Cisco VPN (in OS 2.0) to access these networks without using other aspects of the new enterprise-related components (Exchange, etc)?

Thanks,
momoe :apple:

And stuff begin crashing, see you all in a reboot :/

I wonder if Apple plan to add exchange support within OS X too ? I believe they now have a license for Microsoft ActiveSync and if they add exchange support to the iPhone for calendar and email it would make sense if they add activeSync to get exchange support for Apple Mail and iCal ... after all the iPhone also run OS X ;) ... someone know a bit more about that ? ... this is really the last thing i need on OS X ... exchange support !!!!

i don't know. i'm just surprised when developers don't have a backup phone. so the phone that you are developing for is your only phone? seems a bit careless.

Sound of nail being struck on head.

Of course, the kid who is trying to develop a cool little FaceBook app for his friends to use on their phone might not have multiple phones... but from Apple's perspective, a development machine is exclusively that: for development, not personal use. They even give paying ADC members huge discounts on hardware: provided that hardware is used for app development.

The SDK and Xcode 3.1 is under NDA please keep it to yourself. ...it is a beta for a reason.
But the API Delta is available publicly on their developer website, free of charge. Under NDA or not, Apple's not going to get after someone who's reiterating what Apple has already said. ;)

Seems like Apple change the API a bit but haven't updated the documentation, again. :/ (tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath:withAvailableCell: have been changed to tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: in the UITableViewDelegate protocol).

Also code highlighting has stopped working for me as have auto-completion (double checked my settings) and this on a completely fresh install of Mac OS X 10.5.2 on my MacBook (did it yesterday).
Edit: To clarify a little bit: Code highlighting only works for statements (if/else/while/and so on) and for variables declared in the interface of classes (@interface { NSString *foo; }).
Tough no standard objects will be highlighted nor will any methods/class methods be highlighted or auto-completed. Very annoying.
I just noticed that too, I haven't read enough about their new method of determining whether or not a cell is reusable, but I hope they decide a final implementation soon. :) I have way too many tableview delegates in my project to keep switching them over every time. (And on a side-note, my XCode documentation doesn't update, at all. I have to view the header file in the UI framework to view the changes.)

Also, I'm not having the auto-completion issue. Sorry to debunk the mutiny. :)

(The SDK and Xcode 3.1 is under NDA please keep it to yourself. Lets not lose the privilege.)

Apple isn't even blocking iPhone API/XCode discussions on their own dev forums- I don't think they are overly concerned with it. The beta firmware might be a touchier subject.

So it looks like yet again, Apple is refusing to give us A2DP. This is insane. Steve, build an Apple branded BT headset and charge $200 for it, I don't care, just give me A2DP!

Great! I have over 2000 contacts on my phone, and it's a pain to remember every single name in there (like above, there are about 20 people that share the first name "Bob".
I don't have an iPhone, but I don't understand this comment.

Apple's Address book handles listing contacts in the usual alphanumerical way (by last name), so why doesn't the iPhone?

Is this really something that the iPhone *cannot* do or is it just a problem because of the "easy" (read: "dumb") way people sort things nowadays?

The iPhone sorts your contacts based on your settings in Settings > Phone > Contacts: Sort Order. But I don't know whether the default is First, Last or Last, First. I have mine set to Last, First.

That site requires an ADC account which requires you to accept the NDA. From the login page: "All information presented or provided to you by Apple through the iPhone Dev Center is considered Confidential Information and is subject to your Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions with Apple."

Actually they are...

Questions relating to products you've received through the ADC seeding programs, including questions about the Xcode 3.1 Beta and the iPhone SDK, should not be asked here. See the Seeding Notes of your seeded product for information on confidentiality and the channels by which you can provide feedback and request support.

Reposting this just to be crystal clear.

iPhone 2.0 SDK is entirely covered by NDA, including the documentation. All of it requires login to access it at the iPhone Dev Center.

Items specifically discussed in the announcement are public. But even still, they're not appropriate for discussion on this list.

Anyways tread lightly...

I am a member of the iPhone Developer Program but i can't seem to find where do download the OS 2.0 Firmware. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

It's good to see Apple working this fast. My only gripe (and its minor) is that each build of the SDK has to be downloaded in its entirety. And I get that it is still in the beta stages. I just hope that later when its finalized, patches will be available.

I hear that. It sucks downloading all 3+gig every time.

Anyway to get the simulator working on a PPC?
It runs fine on my PM G5 since SDK1.

Just use the standard installer.
Then open the packages folder and install all the packages which are starting with iPhone.
Make sure you select the Developer folder before you install!!!
Run DiskUtility and repair permissions.
Restart your Mac and you are ready to compile iPhone apps and running the simulater.

I think you only get the pre-release 2.0 firmware if you do the $99 developer thing. If you're not part of that, you'l have to wait until June for the final version is available.

thanks guzhogi, that explains things!

Why iPods and bluetooth are nearly mutualy exclusive I do not understand. What is Apple scared of?

Wait, 802.1X with the need for certificates, authentication, and having both a username and password required to log in? Because no one seems to be reporting on that being supported in the new build (as of yet).

I'm not talking about just regular WiFi but 802.1X support.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.1x

If it is, then could someone take pics?

Yes, that is correct. I'm on my school's wifi network as we speak. I'll try and snap some pics, but I don't have the latest build yet (and the old build has trouble actually forgetting networks...)

yes, the documentation did note that...

but it's the only iPhone i have! I'm new to software development... just learned C less than a month ago (bought some books). Just got done with learning Obj.-C. Now i just gotta learn Cocoa ;);)

if i'm gonna make apps for ordinary users... why not do it on an ordinary iphone?

The iPhone software version 2.0 that is needed for all software developed with the iPhone SDK is not finished yet. It is not in a shape that is good enough to ship it to customers. It will be probably at some point in June or July.

If you want to develop software for the iPhone, and test it on a real iPhone, then you have two choices: Either you wait until the 2.0 software is released to customers until you try out your software on a real iPhone, which means your software is probably ready two or three months later. Or you install the current software on your iPhone today at your own risk. Apple knows it is not good enough to be shipped to customers. You know it as well. Everyone knows that using this software could make your iPhone unusable. So installing it on the iPhone that you use day by day means you could lose the use of your iPhone, and you have to accept that risk.

I'm getting following message every time I sync my iPhone with iTunes after upgrading. Purchased movie from iTunes Store cannot be synced. Does anyone have same problem?

"Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPhone "myiPhone" because the iPhone software is too old. Go to the Summary tab in the iPhone preferences and click Update to get the latest iPhone software update."

I just recently got my SDK up and running and am now getting this as well. Is this a known bug or just part of the beta nature of things?
