Wonder if this will fix anything related to the problems with USB tethering of dslr equipment (Canon and Nikon, at least). There's a pretty nasty bug that was introduced in 10.5.6 that causes an enormous memory leak in the "Image Capture Extension" stuff making it impossible to use those devices with 10.5.6 in a usb tethered mode.

The 10.5.7 change lists aren't referencing it, so I'm getting a bit of a queasy feeling. :(

I hope you made a bug report about it then. Sure, it's not likely to just be you, but if you don't do it and no one else does, they wont know.

Hm. The Xquartz project released X11.pkg version 2.3.3 yesterday. Quote from the release notes:
Important Notices
OS-X Requirements

OS-X 10.5.7 or later is required to install this package.

Could this mean that a release of 10.5.7 is imminent after all?

XQuartz 2.3.3

It is to be expected that the 10.5.7 update will come very soon.
MacUpdate.com pointed me to an update for XQuartz to version 2.3.3.
When I start this, it alerts me that the installation requires OS X 10.5.7

Cheers,
CountPollen

update: oops, seems I bumped the post just before me...

So, what would be the best estimate as to when this will be released?

I guess next week (next Monday, to be exact). Although, since Apple doesn't seem to be doing anything about the Safari 4 issue, perhaps 4 May 09 is a better guess--that might give the Safari 4 team to get off their asses and release a modified installer that doesn't explode when encountering 10.5.7.

With no known issues (other than safari 4 beta) I am hoping today sometime, that would be cool. They will release it though, no later than next Tuesday IMHO.

RELEASE IT NOW :apple:!

The last couple of builds of 10.5.7 have had no known issues other than Safari 4 beta. This has been the case for over two months.

I have to wonder how long they'll leave it now that other packages are requiring it. Or is this just misguessing re imminent status by the XQuartz guys as it is for the rest of us?

I would think this is the case. XQuartz is an open source component and not an official Apple product. And if you follow the XQuartz mailing list, you will see that Jeremy mentioned that the stock Leopard X11 package has been updated in 10.5.7 with some of the XQuartz changes.

Nevertheless, I expect 10.5.7 quite soon. Next Tuesday at the latest.

Okay first post here, but following it for quite some time.

Today I noticed this and thought 10.5.7 is maybe not so far away. Let's say tonight?

Yeah this has been the case for a few days now, well ever since 2.3.3 was released last week...

Well, clearly not today. Perhaps the first week of May. What the hell is taking them so long with this one?

it's not like you really NEED it. 10.5.6 is fine right now. you aren't unable to use your computer because they haven't released the update.. so i don't see what the point to being on the edge of your seat is

Wrong. People who bought new Macs in the last few months who want to swap drives with their older Macs (running 10.5.6 Build 9G55) DO need the 10.5.7 update, because 10.5.6 build numbers are different for Macs that have been released in the last couple of months. Swapping drives will not work properly if the 10.5.6 build numbers are different. We are users typically with massive amounts of applications and customized settings within those applications, so the usual fanboy advice of "Just use Migration Assistant" is highly uninformed. Furthermore, many of us are using hard drives which are better than any stock Apple hard drive (high capacity, 7200 RPM or SSD), and we want to keep these hard drives instead of using the stock Apple drives.

So your comment of "you aren't unable to use your computer because they haven't released the update" is misinformed. Some of us actually are unable to use our computers because they haven't released the 10.5.7 update.

I suggest you browse more.

I need the update due to having the 4870 pause issue and therefore I am unable to use my £2k Mac Pro.

:)
