Not the only way. XtraFinder does all of that, also reinstates colours for the SideBar icons and is free.

Yeah, it seems strange that Apple brought back color for iTunes and has wacky color schemes for iOS now, but they didn't bother to put back color for the Finder? I think it just shows how little attention they are truly giving OSX upgrades. They seem to focus on nothing but iOS anymore. I might understand this if Apple wasn't richer than god and could afford to higher more programmers. I mean come on, most college kids are having a hard time finding a job these days. Apple could help us and them both (and in turn the economy; the more who have decent wages, the more who can afford to spend on luxury crap).

Tags are nothing new, just a castrated version of a feature they had before.

This is my biggest problem with Mavericks. We have a ton of projects using Logic, lots and lots of files. We were using colours for easy visual recognition of the status of certain files and projects...yellow someone on the network is working on, green ready to mix down, red is mixed, ect.

The new dots no longer give you this easy color representation, i find myself leaning into the screen trying to figure out what color is which. Actually, for me it renders the benefits of coloring things so minimal, I may as not do it anymore, it no longer helps.
It was the same some years ago. Coloured labels disappeared from System 9 to the first release of OSX and magically came back as a "new feature" (sigh) on 10.2 or 10.3. So wait patiently a couple of years and everything will be back as you'd want it NOW.
Admitted that Apple is going to release some new computer operating system in the next 2/3 years.

They can only make a difference if they submit a bug report to Apple.
They're asking it wrong :D

External Hard Drives Not Sleeping

I hope they fix this. This is really a pain to have to shut down my iMac so my three external drives don't glow all night:confused:

I wish the update would bring in:

- A fix for new mail sound. With the "new message sound" enabled, there is a significant delay between receiving the e-mail and the sound being played. Sometimes I think I've received a message when I actually have not.

- Better iMessage synchronization between Mavericks and iOS 7.0.4. Messy.

- FINDER FINDER FINDER: I wonder why it became so slow. Opening up a folder for the first time takes more than *20* seconds!

- DOCK: I find also a significant delay when opening up a stack for the first time.

- Preview should prompt us to save a file when we make any modifications.

All the best,
^MPY

I hope this will fix a lot in Mavericks, I personally have experienced more bugs and problems in Photoshop, with my wacom tablet, harddrives working hard for no good reason etc etc...there´s a lot of strange stuff going on right now and I hope an update will help with those things.

Annoying Finder behaviour

I have Mac OS X 10.9 installed on four different Macs, one MB Air, one MB Pro and two iMacs - all have the same Finder issue and I am surprised noone ahs mentioned it here.

In Cover flow mode, if you hit <Space> to preview an image, you sometimes get just a blank white space. You have to try three or four times before the image shows up.
Sometimes you get the image before or after the one you wished to view.
If you delete an image the file will disappear from the file list, but the Cover Flow preview "thumbnail" is still there until you leave/cloes the window and then return.

As a professional photographer working with a lot of images this is extremely annoying!

Strange - I've also been experiencing that first issue, where I'll open a Finder window (to my Documents folder, or some other local spot) and it will spin for 15-20 seconds before anything appears. It's like it's loading a network drive, but it's local. I thought my hard drive was having issues.

Same here. Sometimes I wind up restarting Finder to fix the issue.

Also - fix Exchange. I never had an issue and now Mail fails to get push mail (I have set it to check every minute) and Calendar whines about it being unable to synch with the server; problems I did not have under ML.

Finder does that to me every time my external media drive goes into sleep mode. Starting Finder causes OSX to wake up the media drive and it takes it a good 15-20 seconds to get up to speed again. Meanwhile, I get a spinning beach ball (just lovely). My drive goes to sleep regardless of the settings in Energy Saver after about 10 minutes since Western Digital ignores Apple's settings (although telling it to put the drive to sleep will put it to sleep much sooner, like in 2-4 minutes.

Wrecked the comment system?

I seriously don't think you know what wrecked means.

And that is the most annoying type of comment people on YouTube make.

Most importantly: You are forced to link your channel to Google Plus if you want to post any comments (unless you use a workaround I found out about that still uses Google+ but doesn't force you to link your account). You can no longer see comment replies in your inbox.

Also, the new comment layout is questionable.

Yeah, I don't like tags either. But I only used the color labels for aesthetics.

Yeah it is. QuickLook is crazy slow, sort/arrange-by options aren't remembered, and the "open new folders in tabs" option isn't respected when doing something like clicking "Open in Finder" from a stack.

My arrangement options are working. I just wish it was possible to arrange by date added in the grid view without it sorting stuff into weird semi-coverflow rows. And the slow QuickLook sucks.

Not the only way. XtraFinder does all of that, also reinstates colours for the SideBar icons and is free.

There's also SideEffects, a simplified installer for ColorfulSidebar, for reinstating the colors on the sidebar. Such an improvement!

For the first few hours after I installed it, all the hard drives were working hard for unexplained reasons, but then it was fine.

We need 10.9.1 FAST !!
and please re-instate simple things like when we tag / label a folder do it like it's always done with the whole file name highlighted in colour - it made it easier to find files when scanning a folder full of them rather than this tiny little dot they replaced it with in Mavericks....
how do you suggest they do with for multiple tags?

i like mavericks and haven't had any serious problems. its one of my favorite released to date... new tagging>>>old labeling
i don't use iphoto for anything and i don't do video, so i can't comment on the two other problems you state...

EDIT: i use sort by tags and also i use 'search' a lot. i set searh bar to search the current folder by default

Tried to install XtraFinder, but I keep getting the message, that the package is corrupted. Tried all kinds of stuff, can't find a version that actually installs.

agreed. That's why i use this

Hopefully it fixes:
  • Random beach balls
  • System hangups
  • Low memory issues
  • Safari using almost all system RAM
  • Unresponsive trackpad/click

Hopefully, when people complain about a list of issues they first detail their present system.

Workaround: Write a CRON Job to unmount the disks.

Just 4 info for others who have problems installing XtraFinder:

Trying to install the package always produced a message, that the package is broken. After trying all kinds of stuff, I found this on the developer page: "... try open RemovePackageSignature in the Extra folder in the DMG bundle." Hitting RemovePackageSignature worked just fine and XtraFinder was installed. :)

Anyone having trouble with sleep on Mavericks? My Mac will often not sleep at all after I close the lid.

No. I use my MacBook Air and my MacBook Pro every day. Never failed once.
The only problem I have is the annoying Cover Flow bug.

Apple Seeds OS X Mavericks 10.9.1

When using screen sharing to a headless Mac mini running 10.9 the screen resolution shrinks no matter what you selected. Any applied "fix" reverts to the problem after a reboot.
The choice of screeen sharing encryption settings is missing that can have a great impact on network speed for me is a problem.
Any firewire drive I have including 400/800 will not sleep correctly if at all, fortunately all my external drives have a USB option which does sleep correctly but this is not what I want to do.
Shame that the old Airport Utilities 5.6 will not run under 10.9 as we are left with the dumb new Apple offering.

Mavericks - a sign of things to come

Mavericks,
Really speechless on this Wal-mart upgrade......the glitches are way too long to list. I waited almost 2 years just to do the Lion thing which was never fully functioning.

Apple went from bad to worse. In 20 years, this OS ranks #1 on the rotten apple scale.....Even though it was free, I want my money back....

So what? They linked one of their products with another. Companies do that all the time. As for whether or not it is questionable, that is your opinion.
