I am on the dev portal, but missing something obvious. Does the profile downloaded from the Dev site DL the full installer?
The profile typically will download the incremental update. However, if you then run the installer a 2nd time, it *usually* downloads the full installer. Though it doesn't appear to be happening for this release.

I’m doing one good last backup now . It’s always a good idea to do full backups before big updates

Ah ok thanks. Looks like I am waiting until Thursday to do a clean install.

Hopefully this fixes the Messages threading issues the previous .01 RC1 introduced.

AirPod autoconnect is pretty flawless now on RC1, though, which is a big step up from earlier.

See what they have done to the full installer name:

I.e., no beta in the name anymore.

That means to make a bootable usb installer the command now changes to

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

(if installing onto a 16GB usb named Untitled)
how did you get full installer all my normal tricks don't work

Per the AppleSeed email received earlier today:

Note: For today's macOS Big Sur seed, a full installer is not available. If you are starting from macOS Catalina or an earlier version of macOS, you will need to install 20B5022a (RC1) prior to updating to 20B28 (RC2).
Really? You mean I can't install directly this RC2 from my macOS Catalina?

That’s weird, I’m in the process of downloading right now. It’s offering me the full 12GB download (haven’t gotten to the installer part yet)

Probably the last Intel version of macOS. Looks like full speed ahead to drop the Intel platform just like they did with PPC. The end of hackintosh as well.
I doubt it. They are still selling the Intel version together with the M1 ones on the same page.

Honestly very much doubt it; Cook explicitly said during the WWDC introductionary keynote that Intel would be supported "for years to come".

Besides, Big Sur supports Macs dating back as early as 2013. It'd be ridiculous for them to chop off all Macs other than the 2020 AS Macs recently announced today for next year's macOS version; a big cut next year, going from ~2013 to 2020+ only.

I'd guess macOS will support Intel models for ~5-7 years from now, especially as there might be more Macs coming down the pipeline with Intel processors. It'd make zero sense to discontinue macOS support in fall 2021 for Intel Macs. The final macOS version to support Intel will probably be in around 2026 or 2027, but we'd expect gradual chopping of support for Macs as they age, as usual.

My two cents. Could be wrong.

A few questions:
1. Is the installer universal binary like leopard was?
2. On ARM computers if you upgrade to a newer macOS in 2022 when they drop Rosetta 2 can you revert back to Big Sur or are you stuck like on the iPad on iOS 14?
3. can you erase Big Sur and install let’s say Ubuntu ARM version ?
4. Can you install macOS on external disks like you can now on Intel now and have multiple boot macOS?

If you use an older system like mojave or catalina you can press the button "Upgrade Now" which downloads the full installer.

If you are already on Big Sur (even the current build) you can get the full installer with an MDS beta.

Here is what MDS shows is available as full installers (slightly out of order, I'll put Developer builds first, then public beta then appleseed then public release:

As you can see whoever said appleseed can't get the full installer was wrong. It is available to developers, public beta testers AND appleseed.

Interestingly public beta testers also still have access to an older beta of Big Sur too (beta 9).

Public Release (Big Sur not there yet obviously)

Sorry for being dense, but I'm not familiar with MDS beta. I have access to Dev Portal. How do we pull down the full installer?

I actually don't use MDS for betas or current public releases. I can get them from apple directly anyway.

But MDS is still worth having because sometimes I want to get an older installer. It is quite useful for that.

Anyway, you can get the full installer for Big Sur RC2 by using an older system like mojave or catalina and press the button "Upgrade Now" in the Software Update Preference Pane:

Of course for this to work you have to have installed the macOSDeveloperBetaAccessUtility which comes when you click Install Profile from the Developer Portal:
