:( We've had our iPad 2 a couple of months now but were prepared to upgrade. I'm not doing it because the iPad 3 isn't an "iPad 3" plus it doesn't even have Siri or more memory.

There never will be an iPad "3". From here on out, I'm guessing it's just going to be iPad. Apple's looking for these to eventually take over laptops (I'm guessing), and I have a recent MBP, but it's not MBP 8 or some name similar.

 NOW, where is the next MacPro computer? We've got cash-in-hand to get a new one with faster everything. we've got 32gb RAM and six internal drives in ours and it's just not fast enough for photo editing.

That's not fast enough for photo editing? What size of photos do you edit? I live in Photoshop all day, editing a ton of photos and graphics, and run 8GB of RAM on my MBP. I never have any issues.

Wow, after 2 days on the fence ... I pulled the trigger at lunch today and placed my order. I must have gotten the last one!

Some rough arithmetic.

Has anyone thought of the possibility that they aren't actually "sold out" for the March 16th delivery date, but instead have just run out of space to ship them? I know it comes as a surprise to some of you, but there are only so many planes flying from China in the span of a week and only so much cargo space on those planes.

It's more than possible that FedEx, UPS, etc. might have laid on a few extra planes for this sort of event.

Which brings up an interesting question: How many iPads can a typical commercial freighter carry?

The 777 freighter has a rated cargo capacity of 243,000 lbs. Given an average shipping weight of a packaged iPad of about 2 lbs, that would suggest almost 100,000 iPads per plane. But how does the "cube" work out?

The stated cargo cube of a 777 is 37 standard shipping pallets: Each standard pallet is 96 x 125 x 120". A packaged iPad is roughly 10" x 8" x 2". Each tier on each pallet would hold 144 iPads, and assuming 9.5' of height, gives us 57 tiers. Roughly 5,000 iPads per pallet. (Each pallet is worth approximately the same as a modestly priced US home..)

So, yeah: Roughly 100,000 iPads per plane seems at least plausible. (Please, any commercial freight experts feel free to correct any errors in my back-of-the-envelope math).

Given a worldwide launch-day sell-through of 5 million units, that would imply an extra 50 aircraft. Given the fact that Hong Kong International (the hub closest to Shenzhen) has roughly 300,000 departures and arrivals per year (thats a thousand a day) - I don't think an extra fifty planes over the course of a week is going to throw things into utter chaos.

At 100,000 iPads per plane, the cargo alone has a value of roughly half a billion dollars. Or almost twice the list price of the airplane itself ($280 million.)

Yah, Tim Cook seems to have had the supplies ready for the demand...even a few days isn't bad.

BTW, if anyone is interested in cool wood cases for your iPad, I found these and researched a ton. Good stuff.

That will go well with a 1970s station wagon with wood paneling! ;-)

Ah those were the days... No iPad and iPhones, but s kids you could play in the back without fricking seatbelts!

I noticed when you go to pre-order, you're taken to a page where you can compare models (iPad 2 and new) and yet you can't really pre-order any new iPad. Unless I'm mistaken.

Haha, remember sliding around on the backseat when mom and dad would purposely make sharp turns? :D

You're clicking it wrong. :apple:

:D

I pre-ordered on the first day and it's still processing. =/

Getting nervous.

No need to be. You'll get yours on the 16th.

I ordered mine as soon as I could get into the [online] store. It still says processing and delivery for the 16th.

Got my order in on the 7th, today's status shows 'preparing to ship'. Woot!!!!
This is actually the first time I have pre-ordered a new product so I have it on 'launch day', it is fun to finally be a memeber of the club.

my iphone 4 was preparing to ship for two weeks, it got bumped to later ship date. dont get to happy yet, apple known for this, no ryme or reason

----------

mine didn't ship yet but my delivery date still says the 16th. can't wait to draw on that display.

what happened to the shell cover that was supposed to match the smart cover? i love my smart cover but want a matching shell. i just had a basic sticker on the back for protection on my iPad 2.

draw with a stylus?!!

That's what she said?

Very nicely done although I think you added an extra zero. 100,000 x $664 (avg. value of iPad) = $66,400,000

An impressive cargo value none the less.

You'd be surprised how sharp and modern the wood cases look in person...saw one at a local shop...it looks good with the tech.

I almost ordered last night, but waited until today. *sigh* Like someone else said, I'm surprised the first batch lasted as long as it did.
Oh, well. At least it won't be too long of a wait! :)

what time did you order? i ordered at 10am and says delivers march 16th

I just saw a 12 year old in a carseat in the back of a station wagon wtf.

I always get very frustrated when people ask me why I "need" the latest Apple product. Why does anyone "need" anything beyond food and basic shelter? Sticks in my craw.

so true, why do they NEEED to eat out or buy new shoes or go on vacation, or pay for cable, or have car. its all relative. people are haters

Just wondering, are they selling them in-store day 1 too?

They "sell out" of launch day stock ad only slip delivery by 3 days? That's awesome...must be manufacturing them on a very efficient scale. Kudos!

Apple updated their pre-order page.

So, what do we think Apple sold in the first week worldwide of the new iPad?

considering it's been 2+ days for US release i dunno. let me take a little trip in my DeLorean, hold on I'll get back to you...

:D

I'm sure it's a matter of boxing up each individually and then placing thousands of them all on the same plane with people's iPads that have already "shipped."

Not to worry, our iPad order still says processing too.

same..sucks..

Thanks guys!

I just checked and I ordered both the iPad as well as an Apple TV 'box' however only the iPad is 'Preparing for shipment'. I'm not going to stress about it anymore. I'm just excited because this is my first iPad.

I'm happy to report that I just got my shipping notification for my black WiFi 32gb :D:D:D:D

Fed Ex is delivering and the best part.... It's says it was already picked up in Ontario, CA :)

Makes me feel a little better, because it seems some peoples shipping conformation show it's still in China....but mine is in Cali :p Yay!!

I'm in Portland, OR and whenever something has shipped from CA on a Friday...I almost always get it 1-2 days before "delivery date". Which does show the 16th as delivery date :)

In any event, Fed Ex always delivers to my place by 9-10am. I'm am SOOOOOOOOO excited about my very first Apple product. I needed a change from Android & Windows.

Fed Ex says the "Service Type", is "Standard Overnight - Indirect". Hmmmm...please that mean what it sounds like it means. I did not choose overnight shipping, but it sure does sound like that? Probably normal i would imagine though....

Weight: 3.0lbs

Ii think I'll be making Fed Ex's tracking page my home page for the next few days :)

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it!

:apple: :)

going through withdrawals since selling and shipping my old ipad2 out yesterday.

Is this going to be just like iPad2 launch day? Where everyone thought they had to preorder. But you could go right in the store and buy one?
