There are gonna be A LOT of pissed off people (myself included), if the iPhone 5 isn't a significant revamp.

And they'll still be camping out for days to get one on launch day and they'll be in short supply for months, so it really won't matter if people are pissed off, they'll still buy it.

Maybe Apple doesn't want the Iphone to be a competitor for the Ipad and therefore they are reluctant to make the Iphone 5 bigger...

A little comical to say things like that on a site called MacRumors

Not sure how it's all that comical. I think people that take rumors for truth are both sad and maybe a little dangerous because of their inability to tell the difference between rumor and fact. Just because we come here to enjoy a rumor or two doesn't mean we also are not obligated to process them through a reality field.

Galaxy S2 it looks like for me if true.

"Apple Inc, Yesterdays technology, at tomorrows prices."

Probably 'cuz so "rumor" web site posted stories on newly designed phone with other eyebrow raising specs!

One of the reasons, sites like MR feeds on baseless info. That's how they make money. So no wonder a same design phone is a bummer to these folks.

For people interested in comparisons: here's the Samsung S Galaxy 2 versus the iPhone 4...This new iPhone might be using the A5 chip (I'm not really sure), but even if it is the SGS2 still has a faster GPU and more RAM at the very least. I don't see why anyone not completely tied to iOS would buy an iPhone.

Maybe because Anandtech just did a test of the Galaxy and it performed poorly against the iPad 2. The new iPhone, be it a 4S or 5, is said to have the iPad 2's CPU and GPU so it should be significantly faster than the Galaxy.

If anything the iPad is cannibalizing PC sales, not smartphone sales. I don't know anyone who's stopped using a smartphone and bought a tablet instead.

This news just floors me - did Apple forget that its competition is developing new tech? Apple was ahead of the market when the iPhone first launched. Now it's on the verge of being behind the market.

According to the latest tests by Anandtech, the Galaxy S II is significantly slower than the iPad 2 so even if we get the iPhone 4S, it should still crush the Galaxy II S since it will have the iPad 2's CPU and GPU.

yet it will still be easier to read sites and articles. I will be able to game without my fingers covering 1/2 the screen

Indeed. The folks that camp on rumor sites are a microcosm on the Apple consumer base.

Not comical, but tragical. Exactly because it is called "MacRumors", everyone should know that it is rumors and not be disappointed if something that is rumored doesn't happen.

That's because they stopped talking to you on the phone :)

Makes sense?

I hope to God this isn't true. I don't think Apple would push their normal new iPhone release date from a June/July release to an October release just to bump the specs up on the iPhone 4. They could have released a phone like that 4 month ago with the latest and greatest memory chips, camera lens, and batteries. I'm hoping that this will be the 4S and they will have a total new redesign for the 5. If this isn't the case, Apple is going to get killed and be so far behind the industry. I guess we shall see!

There is not a snowball chance in hell Apple will simply tack on more RAM and the A5 to the iPhone 4 and call it a day.

No way.

You don't take 16 months to release a speed bump. And you certainly don't take 16 months to release a device that looks exactly the same as its predecessor - to regular people, it'll just be another iPhone 4. There's no visual cue to indicate anything's changed.

I thought that Apple targeted it's products to "regular" people. They wouldn't care if it is the exact same thing as long as it's an iPhone 5. Boooooyahh!!

I don't like the iPhone 4.

I really like the iPhone 3GS. The curved back makes the phone a very nice fit in my hand. The more angular back of the iPhone 4 makes it bothersome to hold.

I was hoping for a new design for the iPhone 5 hoping it would go back to a curved model, so I was happy with the earlier rumors. Now I do believe those rumors were wrong, and the iPhone 5 will be basically an "iPhone 4GS".

Which is a pity. I hope my 3GS will hold in one piece until the iPhone 6. I would be far happier with the iPhone 5 inside a 3GS exterior than with the iPhone 5 inside an iPhone 4, no matter how thinner it is.

Maybe because Anandtech just did a test of the Galaxy and it performed poorly against the iPad 2. The new iPhone, be it a 4S or 5, is said to have the iPad 2's CPU and GPU so it should be significantly faster than the Galaxy.

iPad's CPU/GPU chip is half the size of iPhone. There would not be a space left for battery if they put this chip into iPhone 5. iPhone will get A5 core (or two) but it will not be the same chip. And it will be slower.

Sounds fishy...

Apple would have to know that to make people wait from June to October for basically the same 16 month-old phone would be suicide. And this just AFTER Steve Jobs retires? Even the journalists would post EPIC FAIL on all of their stories. They know that now, ESPECIALLY NOW, they need to wow the world. Sure iCloud and iOS5 is coming out, but let's face it, the general public doesn't really GET software like they do hardware. Apple needs to wow the world with new hardware. It's not a good time to retread an old phone.

So... I don't buy this for a minute, unless they are just leaking the next 2nd tier model -- what you get for $99. The current iPhone 4 becomes the $49 and for $199+ you get the all-new designed iPhone 5.

World domination.

The A5 is clocked a little slower than the Samsung's chip. The big difference is the GPU. If the iPhone 4S chips with the 543, it should be competitive or outright superior, but I don't know if that's happening yet.

It would be disappointing to see only a "4S" introduced instead of an iPhone "5".

It's been over a year since the iPhone 4 came out, which is a heck of a long time between releases. A slightly faster version with no other differences would be incredibly underwhelming.

Nothing wrong with the iPhone 4, but it's always nice to see that things are moving forward. Also while Apple offer an attractive package, other manufacturers are stepping up their game, and to sit back with a lazy (yes, lazy) update would be a little naive.

I sincerely hope that it's just a case of Apple keeping the iPhone 5 under heavy security. I don't really want to move away from Apple's sphere when I go shopping for a new smartphone.

edit: Rumors are constantly circulating that Apple are planning major redesigns for their hardware in 2012, maybe (if these rumors of the 4S are true), they are planning to present a whole new front all at once?

With no hint from Apple, this whole site as expectations based on "Rumours" from 3rd party sources.

sad isn't it.

I think the image is fake!

OK doesnt apple always put the memory size of the phone underneath the iPhone stamp, this phone is either a fake or a "cloud" phone with no onboard memory

;) Think about it

How did Apple let you down? I think you mean you may have allowed yourself to be vulnerable to disappointment by feeding into the rumors.

Apple on it's part, as usually, has never talked one feature about the hardware of the next iPhone. It's literally impossible for Apple to let you down because they nether made any inferences or actual promises about the next phone.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I love to see the Tech Geeks get upset because apple doesn't do what Internet Rumor Sites say.

These are the same people that buy a $300 (under contract Retail is higher) and only want a 200 Minute plan. Really??

I use my Phone 90% for business, I put over 4K Minutes a month on my 3 lines. I'm on the road about 1/3 of the year and most of my business traffic goes through my cell. I use mostly business Apps on my phone and of course E-Mail.

For the Bigger Screen?? IPad, that is what I use to show my Work to my clients.

There is a tool for every use out there. And as an Android User, I can't wait for the next Generation IPhone.

so people are shocked that the there is a chance that an iPhone 4S and no true iPhone 5 is released till later 2012 (at next refresh)

I still dont know why people expect it to be different,

iPhone released, (or the iPhone beta as i like to call it, still the best looking iphone of the lot IMO)
refresh time
iPhone 3G released
refresh time
iPhone 3GS Released
Refresh time
iPhone 4 Released
Refresh time late 2011
iPhone 4S released (bringing the iPhone 4 on par with the iPad 2 power wise)
Refresh Time late 2012
iPhone 5 and iPad 3 released roughly in sync with a new spangly features and probably IOS 5.5 or some such,

All this discontent comes from the Leaked new tapered cases. If nobody had see those cases, they would have been thrilled with the concept of keeping the current case. I like the current case. Bigger Screen?? WHY?? It's a Phone. For a Bigger Screen, I use the IPad.

Why would you not want a bigger screen if the size of the iphone does not increase. An edge to edge screen could be bumped up to ~ 3.7 inches with MINIMAL if not any changes in the dimensions of the iphone.

As said before, a 3.5 screen looks like a toy next to the 4 inch android monsters.
