i actually think that the specs in the article are the iPhone 4S.Im sure the 5 is gonna be a big upgrade.

Apple keeping the IPHONE4 design makes sense for Apple as it was a true winner. However it makes no sense for the customers as everyone wants bigger and better. Unfortunately this may be the case as Apple has concentrated more on the IOS5 side this year.

So bottom line: Big lines, millions of IPHONE5 sales to come, small changes to Apples greateast IPHONE4.

No one knows for sure what the next iPhone will look like but what we do know is the announcement and release of the device is taking forever. I guess Apple works on their schedule and not ours.

And thus I say stick with the iphone 4 and for the people that wont a larger screen go with iphone 5.

The overall iPhone 4 design isn't for me, not to mention that I personally do not want to buy 18 month old hardware. So instead I suggest the following scenario which better meets my needs...

Apple comes out with their redesigned iPhone 5 (new enclosure, same size). Meanwhile, those who want a larger screen can go with an Android or Windows phone.

so people are shocked that the there is a chance that an iPhone 4S and no true iPhone 5 is released till later 2012 (at next refresh)

Yes we know the pattern. But when the 3GS came out, the iPhone was still the most powerful phone out there by far. Now, Android phones are much more competitive so there is more of a need to refresh everything.

PS. you spelt 'Matte' wrong in your signature.

If this is that case and the '4S' is the only new phone we see this year from Apple, I'll only be slightly surprised... but very disappointed. :(

I don't want it to have a taper because that makes it more awkward to hold widescreen, but obviously I don't want a slightly redesigned iPhone 4 either. Guess I lose either way.

Still not getting an Android. The iPhone is a legitimate gaming device; I love videogames, but I never have time or money for them anymore. Problem solved.

The leaked thinner designs (in my not-so-humble opinion) will be an iPod Touch. The iPhone release will be an iPhone 4S type upgrade. The reason this is taking so long is the development of iOS5 and iCloud. These things are going to be a huge rollout and Apple does NOT want to have another MobileMe debacle, especially with Steve resigning. It's more than just putting out a new phone, it's putting out a whole new mobile/date ecosystem.

re ip5
odds are next release will not be the sexy thin rendered (imagined) ip5 peeps were licking their chops over
expectations were too high - as always

3. I just want to ditch my paperweight iPhone 3G ASAP.

I am with you on this one. I am so tired of touching an icon, waiting three seconds for the phone to react, waiting ten seconds for the app to actually load, then waiting God knows how long before the app can actually do anything. To say nothing of the awesome delays in typing a text message.

So the source says there will be no iPhone 5 announcement in september??? Oh no

Not quite. It says that Apple's supply chain isn't producing or preparing to produce an iPhone 5. I don't know what the timeline Apple works on is like, but it's not a good sign for the iPhone 5 if it doesn't appear to exist about a month before its rumored release.

Maybe cos not all people are that bothered about specifications.
You'd fall into the "completely tied to iOS" crowd then, if you'd buy a significantly slower phone with a worse form factor just because of the OS it's running on.

So basically same as iPhone 4 now with faster CPU and better camera, kind of what I expected, did not think they would redesign a whole new phone after just one year.

This.

I think the WOW factor for this release will be the new OS. Plus the possibility of a single iPhone that will work on all (cdma / gsm) carriers, thereby unifying iOS releases.

please no. :(

This will have me wondering why I skipped the iPhone 4. It's been nearly 15 months, it should be better than this.

Well, whats so wrong with your 3GS?
Apple will release products to it's own specifications. If a new phone comes out it WILL be an upgrade worthy enough to entice people to either a) choose it over a competing manufacturer, or b) upgrade from an older model, regardless of which model they own.

Besides, the haters always have the CHOICE of getting a GSII or similar. Its not like you're forced to purchase Apple products.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

This is depressing to read.

Agreed. Looks like Steve's exit from Apple was a sign of bad things to come. This seems like no update to me. A little faster. Big deal.

I'd be both very surprised and disappointed if those were all the changes that were made.

I agree. Especially with the Bionic's release, and many other 4G LTE devices that have Dual Core processors and 1 GB of RAM.

I don't like the stock Android at all, I find myself trying to make it look as an iOS device as much as possible.

I played around with the camera on the Bionic and compared to the HTC Thunderbolt, and man, that dual core really kicks in then. The camera in itself SUCKS, but when you're recording video, there's no lag time in the frames as you're doing a panoramic view, while the Thunderbolt it gets shoppy and grainy.

I would love to see a total redesign, but it's not a HUGE deal to me. I just wanna see 1 GB of ram and dual core!

Wait 15 months and we get the exact same design? I'd pass on that one. No one cares about CPU upgrades, as evidenced by the fact that when the 3GS came out, a lot of people said "meh".

Well, I said meh to the 3GS (but my contract wasn't up so I wasn't changing phones at the time) but in hindsight now, I'm not going to say meh to a good processor update.

Why? because look at how short a life span the 3G had (apple was crippling it majorly by the time the 4 came out and it was shown that it ran iOS 4 pretty badly). And look how well the 3GS has lasted (around this time line on iOS5 the 3GS should be just as crippled if it were going on the same timeline but so far it will run everything the 4 will on iOS5).

The 3GS was obviously the better phone for having an updated processor while the 3G was actually running on the same processor as its predecessor. The 3GS is going to stay relevant longer than the 3G did (shoot, the 3G was already laggy by the time iOS 4 came around).

Given that I'm kinda worried what will happen to the 4 next year will be the same as what happened to the 3G... it's going to be faster to get obsolete (it did have some processor upgrade but not as much). But we got different looking phone.. yay? I think I'd prefer the phone that gets the better specs that will keep relevant longer. Shoot, I already notice it lag a bit now on things and it's still the newest iphone! Totally think a processor upgrade is a very good upgrade for it.

(No, I'm not saying I hate my 4, I love it honestly. I love the design. But I am saying if you are logical a spec design difference is far more important than just looks).

Anyways, I don't upgrade my phone anyways until my contract is up (by that time there is a pretty big difference regardless ;) ). But if I were going to go pay full price for the new phone, I think now I'd pay more attention to spec differences than case design differences when deciding if it was worth upgrading.

This.

I think the WOW factor for this release will be the new OS. Plus the possibility of a single iPhone that will work on all (cdma / gsm) carriers, thereby unifying iOS releases.

Wow? keep dreaming.....

Don't panic, nothing's been released yet.

Here are my points.

1. The case leaks. I don't feel like they would make cases unless they were absolutely positive that the design was final.

2. It's too long of a wait. The 3G->3GS was only one year. If this was true, it would be the first time I would ever call Steve Jobs stupid.

3. Nuance. They would have included this in iOS5 and advertised this at WWDC if it wasn't for new hardware that most likely contains improvements relevant to this software enhancement.

For those of you freaking out, don't. We still have three weeks. Once more and more shipments and evidence comes through and the date gets closer and closer, you're very likely to see leaks or more reports from either side. If this does in fact become true, well, whatever. This means that next year there WILL be a new design. I just don't feel like this is the case this year though. There are way too many finger points at a redesign...

It's just common sense, why would you wait three more months to release an iPhone that you've released 3 months earlier for the past 4 years in a row? There is a reason for EVERYTHING, and most likely there are reasons that we haven't even speculated yet.

Who knows, maybe this article is right; maybe it's because that the iPhone has such few redesigns that it needs the support of new iPods/etc to make it a news article. But we don't know anything yet. Expect more news this week ;) And the next.

Hope not

Sounds strange if this rumor is correct but we have seen it before with 3Gs. But that was different as 3G wasn't good enough to handle 3G communication.

I'm still hoping for a re-design and iPhone 5 as a 3Gs owner. Also think that apple went into the wrong direction with the iPhone 4.

All I wanted was a bigger screen. At least this makes it easy for me to not spend anything and keep my iPhone 4.
