I'm calling bs. I think it's going to be an iPhone 4S, and an iPhone 5. It's been OVER a year now...there's no way Apple would release essentially the same phone.

Why wouldn't they do a real update including the design? It would be pathetic. The screen is too small to do anything serious on it like type emails or read longer articles. If they don't finally change that in this iteration, I'll go to Android.

Serious chance I'm just going to pick up a Samsung Galaxy S 2 if there isn't a significantly improved iPhone 5. No reason to buy old tech.

Honestly I can't see this being true.

If there isn't an iphone 5 then who would realisitically upgrade? For a faster processor? Is there anything that is really dog slow on the 4?

Biggest thing that makes me think there will be a major update is that the white came out earlier this year. If this was only going to be a 4S style upgrade then wouldn't they have held back on something like that? It would have been fast/better camera and now available in white.

I can't see lots of 4 owners upgrading to a 4s if processor and camera is all that it brings.

lol your funny, we can all say the same thing "that so and so says they want a 3.5" that person doesnt speak for all. Personally I would like a larger screen, I currently have an EVo 4G for a year and a half now, and my friend at work has the iphone 4, and whenever i look at that iphone 4 screen i shake my head because all I can think is "damn that screen is way to small". Trust me you dont know what your missing with a bigger screen, its like when your a gamer and upgrade from your whack 32inch to a 42 or more, you'll see the difference and most likely wont go back. I dont see why the old heads are crying about not wanting a slightly bigger screen. If it does have a bigger screen just stick with the iphone 4 and leave the others alone.

A slightly bigger screen to me would be 3.7 inches....not 4 or 4.3 or 4.5. And you telling me to quit crying and just stick with an iPhone 4 if i like the current size, is like me telling someone who wants a larger iPhone to quit crying and go buy an Android already.

I have no problem with people voicing their opinions about a larger screen, and I will of course voice my opinions about wanting the same screen size to maintain currently portability. I do have a problem with people making blanket statements that we all want a larger screen when clearly there are plenty of us who like the current screen size and the smaller handset that this allows for.

This would be a good upgrade for 2011. Apple will get away with this because the competition is still catching up. Now with Android partners releasing loads of crap phones with batteries that last half an hour, people have more choice, but who wants huge screens and no time to view anything on them?

Fixed

I honestly hope Apple doesn't release a newly redesigned iPhone. If you want to get an iPhone, just get it now, and if the 5 gets released with a new design and you want it then, then get it then. All this speculation is just gonna cause more disappointment.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I honestly think after waiting this long I will be truly disappointed in no redesign. In my opinion the iPhone 4 is awkward in shape and the glass design is nothing but a pain. No new iPhone for me if they don't redesign it. Total letdown on apples part.

How did Apple let you down? I think you mean you may have allowed yourself to be vulnerable to disappointment by feeding into the rumors.

Apple on it's part, as usually, has never talked one feature about the hardware of the next iPhone. It's literally impossible for Apple to let you down because they nether made any inferences or actual promises about the next phone.

Moreover, Apple doesn't have a history of changing the iPhone's case each and every model. The 3G was slightly more curved and plastic than the original, but it was incremental change, not radical. The 3GS case, of course, was identical to the 3G. The 4 was a radical departure, so it seems rather safe bet Apple would keep the case because it saves on having to retool.

And thus I say stick with the iphone 4 and for the people that wont a larger screen go with iphone 5.

Bottom line here is, nobody knows anything. :D
Apple did a great job keeping all the info on the iPhone 5 from spilling out.

I would agree that it doesn't make sense for Apple to do this minor of an upgrade this far into the iPhone 4's life cycle for their flagship phone.

There must be a new redesigned iphone5. Its irrelevant that the iphone4 sales are good for now. Without a major "wow" update coming this year, Apple can lose its leading position in the long run. There are tons of competitors on the market and Apple simply cannot afford selling the same phone for years. Apple had all the resources and time to build a new iphone with lots of "wow" features. And the expectations are so high today that not meeting them will risk Apple's public image as an innovative and highly creative company. Apple is not a company that can rely on its well-selling legacy products.

I seriously don't even care if it's fully redesigned or not. Just give it the A5 and such, and I'm happy. My E71 is feeling really old at this point. I know I want my next phone to be an iPhone, but I'm definitely waiting until the new one is released. Quick!

It's sad that industry is running more and more into programmed obsolescence. E71 is a nice device although Symbian S60 is abandoned by app makers.

In general smartphone and tablet market are oriented this way. Galaxy Tab 7" will probably never receive an Android 3 upgrade although actually its hardware would support it. An Adobe Flash player would also increase its lifespan by years. I really prefer the desktop/laptop era when we had the option to just upgrade the software. We could also add more RAM to the computer and keep it functional for years. Now we're pushed by manufacturers for doing yearly upgrades. It's an unsustainable approach. I'd do really prefer paying more for something sure that I would get a long term software support.

BS,
Apple is just doing fine. Nothing wrong with the current design. If they improve speed and reception, adding iOS5 on top of it then it's all good.

People have such high expectations that no matter what they will always be disappointed.

Not trying to be rude, but you should probably be more careful with your phone. Cracked screen, and you left it out, presumably on a table exposed to drinks?

Or did the lady spill her drink into your pockets? :p not trying to be a jerk, just seems like a lot of terrible stuff has happened to your phone!

I can see how you would think that, but i've had the phone since the 3gs launched, skipped out on the 4 cause i hate the square design so i've had it a while.

When it got wet it was reting on a table plugged into the stereo playing music at a buddy's place, not like sitting out at a wild bar..but i appreciate your judgement on my ability to be responsible.

Yep. Curse me / throw rocks or whatever.

If the new iPhone is the same as iP4 (screen size) I won't be upgrading and going HTC or Samsung.

Apple's starting to get lazy and it sucks.

While 16 months for a "speed bump" is a long time, as noted, the iPhone 4 is selling extremely well and is securing new cellular providers that only increase the sales rate.

As to "why hold it back just for iOS 5?", let us not forget that they held back the latest MacBook Air - another device selling immensely well with a "speed bump" upgrade planned - so they could ship it with OS X 10.7.

I kind of think Apple expected iCloud and iOS 5 to be out by now and if one or both of those are delayed, that could mean we're waiting longer for the iPhone 4S (assuming this is what Apple has always planned) than Apple originally planned (there was around 12 months between the 3G and 3GS).

As to the secrecy, I don't think Apple could keep this kind of secret unless they're building it themselves or they will show the design in October (alongside the 4S), but will not ship it until 2012 (meaning no units have started production so there is nothing for the supply chain to leak).

Too many people have access to the supply chain and the monetary incentives to get pics out has to be immense so if it's in production now, we'd have seen it. Even if the engineer had not left the iPhone 4 prototype behind for Gizmodo to get their hands on it, the design would have leaked before launch.

If the new iPhone is the same as iP4 (screen size) I won't be upgrading and going HTC or Samsung.
same here..the Galaxy S II sure is enticing.

According to the latest tests by Anandtech, the Galaxy S II is significantly slower than the iPad 2 so even if we get the iPhone 4S, it should still crush the Galaxy II S since it will have the iPad 2's CPU and GPU.

People want new design just to show off their new iPhone.
The reason for waiting or 1.4 year is simply to milk the money out of iPhone 4 as much as possible. And lastly, smartphone's performance has come to the point that it is enough for most people (obviously not gadget geeks, gadget gurus in this forum).
But tablet is still new and is not fully optimized yet. Apple may concentrate on its iPad more than iPhone from now on.

...seen no evidence of the rumored redesigned "iPhone 5" in the supply chain. Instead, his sources point to the "N94" iPhone that has been popularly referred to as the "iPhone 4S" as the sole new iPhone model set to ship...

HUGE dissappointment if this is true. Be looking at cheap discounted refurbished 3GS or look around at the Android stuff, as the current design doesn't interest me.

For people interested in comparisons: here's the Samsung S Galaxy 2 versus the iPhone 4:

iPhone:
Apple A4 @ 800 Mhz
512 MB RAM
PowerVR SGX 535
16/32 GB NAND

SGS2:
1.2 GHz Exynos 4210 Dual Core Cortex A9
1GB RAM
ARM Mali-400
16/32 GB NAND (requires microSD for 32)

This new iPhone might be using the A5 chip (I'm not really sure), but even if it is the SGS2 still has a faster GPU and more RAM at the very least. I don't see why anyone not completely tied to iOS would buy an iPhone.
