There are gonna be A LOT of pissed off people (myself included), if the iPhone 5 isn't a significant revamp.

no. there will be a *minor* number of people -- tech-nerds that read this site. most people wont know or care. the vast majority of millions upon millions are apple's core target market, not tech nerds who upgrade annually.

Bingo. It's a SMARTPHONE not a CURE FOR CANCER. I know people who still use their original iPhones because they love the form factor that much. It's slow if you use a 3GS or a 4. It's not slow if you don't. It just is.

Yeah, I am really starting to doubt that we are getting a redesigned iPhone, which is extremely disappointing after all this time waiting. We are a month away from the alleged release date, and we haven't seen one part leak that indicates a major design change. This is so lame. :( I hope the people at the keynote boo the hell out of them when they reveal the lame "iPhone 4S".

Why would apple wait longer then the regular yearly updates if it's only a performance update? I would expect something more since they had additional research time this round. I Hope all their research ins't towards the iPad. Steve Jobs did say this is "The Year of the iPad."

all i know is that apple had better drop a WWDC date by the end of this week
Why? The developers conference is typically in June and often they won't announce the conference dates until a month or two before the actual event.

There is no reason for anyone here to expect the dates of WWDC 2012 from Apple during this calendar year.

Some of you guys are incredibly deluded.

You actually want Apple to keep the 3.5" screen so you have something to look forward to in the future? That has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever read on this site.

For me, the form factor. It's a personal preference thing, but I was never comfortable holding a 4. I know it's thinner and lighter, but it felt thicker and heavier. Also didn't slip into the pocket of my jeans with the careless of abandon of the 3GS; always felt like I'd snag an edge and drop it; almost did a few times. And the edges made it uncomfortable to hold. I know, buy a case. But I prefer not to bulk up the phone with a case if I can avoid it.

Oh, also I was able to get it in white day one, not wait almost a year for a white one -- I gave up waiting in October of last year and bought a black 4.

Those are legitimate personal preferences about the form factor. I prefer the 4 - the rounded back is nice on the 3GS, but it feels a lot wider in my hand even though the phone is only a tiny bit wider.

I actually love the roundness of the 3GS because of the way it fits in my hands. The 4 is gorgeous and all, but I always feel the need to baby it a bit more. Since the 3GS was much wider and curved, it didn't feel like it was going anywhere.

Makes no sense

Why Why Why would it take 16 months to just make a minor refresh to the current iphone 4? Makes no sense... and if it is true, I would have to say that Apple is falling quickly behind other manufactures who are making improvements to their phone much faster.

I want Apple to keep the 3.5" screen because I think it is the perfect size. Jumbo Droid sizes are ridiculous. Even slightly larger screens compromise the dpi of the "Retina" display. I also don't want to retrain my thumbs to type on a slightly wider keyboard.

i thought that the WWDC's were used alongside the product unveiling(s).

so change that to "i need to see a product unveiling date set....".. b/c im getting tired of waiting

I would not be surprised if the "iPhone 5" ended up being a new iPod touch w/ 3g support.

Think about it. Stick a 4" screen in an iPod touch, and give it the same sort of 3g support that the iPad has, and now you have a smartphone sized tablet that you can use VOIP over WiFi to make phone calls, or purchase 3G service when you are on the go.

Perhaps more interestingly, Kuo has seen no evidence of the rumored redesigned "iPhone 5" in the supply chain. Instead, his sources point to the "N94" iPhone that has been popularly referred to as the "iPhone 4S" as the sole new iPhone model set to ship, with Apple planning for 30 million units through the end of the year.[/url]
I don't find this at all surprising. I had the impression months ago that Apple was looking to ship a new "iPhone 4G" this fall (much like the iPhone 3G) and that was all, but the rumor-mills kept pushing to call it the "iPhone 5". While I did not expect this phone to be much different than the iPhone 4, I did expect the phone to be 4G to keep it in line with other top-tier phones. I guess we'll see.

Here is a case where Apple's own secrecy may bite them in the butt, and a lot of people may be disappointed. Then again, Jobs may have planned this to make the new folks not look quite up to par with his "legacy".

OMFG.

I hate the way competition copies Apple stuff but if it wasn't for them, maybe Apple will be still selling iPhone 1st gen (and making tons of profit).

Maybe that's why Apple is supposedly not upgrading iPhone4? Competition still didn't catch up?

they have passed as far as specs..... but thats not the only thing that makes a phone....android cant really catch up in terms of Operating system, unless they boost the ram etc... IOS is smoother with less specs....

The PPI can be compromised though. Going by Apple's claim that 300 PPI at a 12" viewing distance is what is required, that means the screen can be 3.8" diagonal and still be a Retina display at 960x640 pixels.

Typing is moot. With no tactile feedback, you have to look anyhow.

With iOS 5 Apple is making software and services improvements that are years beyond their competitors. The iPhone 4 is a better handset now then anything else on the market, even if it doesn't have the fastest CPU, fastest radio, or biggest camera sensor. Any improvements in the iPhone 5 will only increase the overall quality gap over competing handsets.

I doubt their sales numbers will show they are falling "quickly behind", either.

Only reason it took so long is because iOS 5 got pushed back due to them wanting to finish Lion for the summer and because of iCloud. Nothing hardware related.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

I am still in contract with my 4, so I am holing for some news on the touch front more than anything.

Just curious:

If you've already got an iPhone 4 with which you are currently satisfied, why exactly do you need to be in the market for a second sub-tablet-form-factor iOS device (aka iPod touch)?
