Apple Sending iOS 5 to iPhone Assemblers at End of September, No Sign of Redesigned iPhone 5

Just want to point out that this will be Apple's first post-Steve product launch; they have to knock it out of the park. 16 months for a "Meh." upgrade isn't going to cut it, although I'm sure that they will be playing up iOS 5 heavily.

If the iPhone 5 doesn't have a 4" screen, I will be taking a more serious look at Androids.

agree.

I have to say, I was at a large business convention this past weekend and I noticed a lot more Android large screen phones than in the past, and less iPhones. If there is only an iPhone 4S, may start to see an effect in Apple's next quarters numbers.

Hi

iPhone wont be changing appearance this year.

It will get an under clocked A5, Bluetooth 4.0, 8MP Camera, World Radio, Improved Antenna and slightly better battery.

iPad changed because it needed to, desperately. iPhone does not.

People people, you have to release that these "analysts" know no more than what we do. Its mere speculation. There is going to be a redesign for the next gen iPhone. Just be patient.

I will admit i would be upset if the appearance of the iphone was the same...

I like the iPhone 4 design, so that part doesn't upset me. In fact, I think the tapered design would only subtract from the beauty of the iPhone. Tapered backs and teardrop shapes are an engineering design concession to fit in more parts while trying to appear thinner.

The main reason I want a case redesign for the iPhone 5 is that I want a 4" screen. :(

What was so desperate about the iPad 1? I own an iPad 2, and I rarely use it's claim to fame "FaceTime". Yes its thinner, yes it has the A5...but nothing new that solved some previous woe. IF they gave it the 300+ DPI screen...then you might have a point.

IMHO, Apple needs a revolutionary answer to a 1.5 year cycle on the most successful phone on the planet. 1.5 years just to fit the specs you listed above would be a joke.

Personally I think that there likely will be a redesigned iPhone this year, as many others have suggested. I don't see apple waiting so long to introduce one nearly identical phone, they're smarter than that. I'm thinking the iPhone 4s is something they let "leak" in order to divert attention from the iPhone 5 to avoid a leak of the iPhone 4 like last year. I do think the 4s will release as well, but it could be the diversion they need.

Common sense would lead anyone to assume that they have a special device for doing multiple iPhone at once anyway

probably not that special at all. Likely it is a standard computer set up using a unique iTunes version or other software and can load the software, maybe even on several devices on a hub at once

I got tired of reading every rumor so I just decided to upgrade to an Android device. All rumors say that 4G LTE wasn't going to be in the next iPhone and I upgraded to a Android device solely on that reason alone. Besides, I still have my iPad 2 for my iOS needs so it's a win-win situation regardless.

I'm betting this is true. We would have already seen more speculation/spy-shots of the iPhone 5 if it was in production. They would be making hundreds-of-thousands a day. We would have seen something by now.

Forget in production. What about that allegedly lost iPhone 5 prototype. It was in the wind for a good 24 hours before the Apple gestapo paid off the SFPD to help them put the screws to the alleged thief. Where are the deets from that. For the record, the lack of such is why i'm inclined to call BS on that whole tale. No one has that kind of info and keeps it quiet

Or, given that basically nothing has changed, it's an 8GB iPhone 4 to be the new cheap model (change in storage changing the model number) and the iPhone 4s/5 is something else

That's what I think.

Apple has no products for the prepaid market - they need a lower cost handset. Something that will sell without contract for $200-$300.
By tweaking the iPhone4 - Apple can hit this price point and go aggressively into that market. By having an "older-looking" device, it won't cannibalise sales of the main iPhone too much.

Meanwhile they release the iPhone5 as the premium handset for contract. The iPhone5 will have to look new.

I also suspect there will be a big update for the iPod touch - perhaps by ending the iPod moniker and adding a 3G option. If the large screen device is real, I think it's a touch.

So did you miss the iPhone 3GS release?

The 3GS was a major upgrade for original iPhone owners coming off 2 year agreements -- gave access to the 3G network.

The iPhone4 was a major upgrade for iPhone 3G owners coming off 2 year agreements -- gave full-featured access to iOS 4 (multitasking) and dramatically re-designed the product.

What's the major upgrade iPhone 5 offers for 3GS users coming off a 2 year agreement?

New iOS features? Nope -- iOS5 works fine on 3GS phones.

Access to new apps? Nope -- 99.9% of the app store supports legacy hardware in the 3GS and 4.

New form / design? Nope -- looks the same as the iP4, complete with fragile glass construction and exterior antenna.

Apple is making it tremendously easy to, as a 3GS user coming off contract, skip this upgrade and wait for the iPhone 6 (which should feature LTE, NFC, and a form-factor change). I'm sitting here, money in hand, and willing to upgrade if Apple gives me a reason. Instead, they're selling me the same fragile design with no new features that my current phone doesn't already support.

Why would I pay for a less-durable version of what I already own?

Perhaps Apple will kill-off the iPod touch and replace it with the 4" iPad mini.

C.

Apple has basically said they will never make in iPad mini.

Might they revamp the touch to a slightly higher size to better fit the gaming market for such a device. Sure. No need to reprogram any apps since iOS can already blow them up to iPad size. Automatically going up to a 4-5" touch is child's play

Some of you guys can't be serious.

Did you not read the article about how strict apple is regarding keeping their new products secret? The iPad had more pre-release buzz than the new iPhone, and yet real pics of it came out just a day before the announcement. Since no one saw any real pics or had real evidence before then, does that mean there wasn't an iPad in existence?

This guy's source is someone who works at Apple who was specifically told to give him this info just so it could put more seeds of doubt into your heads. When the new product is unveiled, now you all will be even more elated than you previously would have been if you didn't hear this idiotic rumor. You will have even more allegiance to Apple because the idea that they 'came through' even after all the 4S rumors will be so fresh in your minds.

There will be a good upgrade, a true iPhone 5. Just relax and think about how much sense the above makes.

I agree with your points about reasons to upgrade. But I have to say, the iPhone4 is dramatically more durable than its predecessors.
The 15 month old 3GS is a battered, scratched and dirty looking thing.
The glass and steel iPhone 4 still looks brand-new.

I should have done what you did. I will next time. The whole wait and their secretive thing has definitely been a turn off for me.

if it's just an a5 and 4g upgrade, then nexus prime it is, for me at least

i don't know, but i'm upgrading my wife's iphone 4 to the new one next month

Apple has basically said they will never make in iPad mini.

They have never said any such thing. Nor would they.

The iPod touch is not really an iPod. It has always been an iPhone without the phone part.

If the product gets a major update, it might just get a new name too.

So far Apple is late with the iPhone and iPod updates, Not to mention IOS 5.

Late implies they announced a date they didn't make.

None of this is late or delayed. It is right on schedule. Apple justices their prerogative to change the schedule without telling us why. Legally don't have to tell us just like they don't have to tell us weeks or months in advance what they are up to. Heck legally they coukdn't probably just ship the new iPhones with any hoopla. Just on day they are in the stores. Dumb move marketing wise, but it is they right to be dumb if they wish

I see a pattern on here, mention the "An....." or "S" word and u get automatically voted down no matter what other good things u mention.

I understand now why FB doesnt have a dont like button :D

Faster processor and GPU?
Better battery life?
Front-facing camera?
FaceTime?
Retina display?
HD video recording?
8MP camera?
New design (to them)?
Twice as much RAM?
Gyroscope?
Access to improvements in optimized apps?
