8MP camera?
New design (to them)?
Twice as much RAM?

Access to improvements in optimized apps?

What about iPhone 4 users? I bought mine on release date and can update in december, not that far.

They have never said any such thing. Nor would they.

October 2010 Quarterly Earnings Announcement: "unless these seven inch tablet competitors also ship their device with sandpaper for users to shave down their finger to fit on the screen, they will not provide users with an adequate tablet experience."

If that isn't Jobs saying that Apple isn't going to make a 7 inch tablet because it is too small to be usable, I'll eat your shorts. And if they think 7 inches is too small they won't be making anything smaller.

Battery life? Really? My 3GS is enough battery and that is worse than the 4.
Front-facing camera? Derp. I could get that with a 4.
FaceTime? Never use it. Don't care. Already in the 4.
Retina display? Already in the 4.
HD video recording? Meh. Maybe. Doubt it. Wouldn't be good quality if it had it.
8MP camera? Yup. This is one feature that would be better. And again, meh.
New design (to them)? If iPhone 4 is the same design, its not a reason to upgrade to the 5.
Twice as much RAM? Which buys what exactly. My 3GS and wife's 4 perform the same with the apps we use. that is a non-reason.
Gyroscope? For what exactly? There would have to be a REALLY compelling reason. The compass never worked well for me, nor was it ever implemented in anything non-gimmicky.
Access to improvements in optimized apps? When the apps demonstrate a true benefit to the new hardware I'd say you're right. But that won't be the case on release... probably not till the iPhone 6 is out.

Why do people forget that Apple has two release candidates. A safe one and an aggressive one. If the aggressive one is susceptible to any stumbling blocks then they release the safe upgrade. Looks like that is what might have happened. Regardless, it's a bummer. I'll still upgrade because my 4 is messed up. I was hoping for more RAM but I guess it doesn't need it. And that larger screen would've been nice as long as it was still a Retina Display.

You are completely correct that Apple wouldn't ever make a 7" tablet (or smaller) and push it towards productivity. It's clear they believe the format requires a 10" screen.

But Apple might brand their 4" games and media player with a new name - a name that draws on the success of the iPad. Just think the iPod name no longer makes a lot of sense.

Guys and girls... it's a phone. you all have amazing iPhones from last year, calm down. you don't need any of this. putting that aside, i call bs and say that i think it will be a redesign. but honestly we don't know, so lets wait it out for just less than a month now.

remember all those folks (me) who still have a 3gs. don't whine about your beautiful iPhone 4s. be happy with what you have

Yes, because "iPod" always made a ton of sense ;)
I know what you mean though, but I think that'd be giving iPad a bad name. iPad is an extension of MacBooks. iPod feels completely different.

Still using my First Generation iPhone. It's time for a change. New design would be cool. 14+ month => new design

:apple:

Wow, very very disappointing. I have had the 3GS since it came out, I held off on upgrading to iPhone 4 because I thought a totally new 5 was in the works. What a JOKE! We've all been waiting this long just to be let down by a lousy "4S"??? If this is the case, I won't think twice about switching to Droid.

A "spec bump" for apple's flagship device after the current version has been on the market for 18 months seams like fianancial suicide.

Only if you think this iPhone is being designed for those that have the iPhone 4. It's not. The majority of phone users go pretty much the full 2 years before an update.

They are likely the folks that the new iPhone was designed for. And for them, from 3gs to even a '4s' is a big jump.

----------

Apple cannot have a blind eye to the success Android is having.

sure they can. Just like they have had a blind eye to what all those Windows hardware companies have been up to. Like Blu-ray in computers. Apple has been ignoring that feature for years, even after the licensing became less of a bag of hurt.

Guess what? The lack of blu-ray hasn't hurt Mac sales. They are actually increasing.

Apple does what Apple wants first and foremost. If the rest of the world is making stylus based 5" phones with slide out keyboards, awesome. Apple will keep making their stylus not required, 3.5" screen etc. Until they are ready to do something different.

This is the only argument which is viable on their timeline. On the other hand...those of us on the 3GS would have upgraded to a 4 if the 5 didn't come out anyhow.

As a 3GS user, if there is not a redesign I have no incentive to upgrade. Here is to hoping the Nokia Windows Phone is a nice build.

Pass on 4S, Buy on 5.

edit: who am I kidding, I'll probably buy the 4S...

Faster processor and GPU?
The 3GS's processor and GPU already runs all features of iOS5 and 99.9% of the games/programs in the App Store.

Better battery life?
Most test results indicated battery life in the iP4 /iP5 was marginally better than the 3GS, nothing noticeable.

Front-facing camera?
A gimmick. I've yet to encounter an iP4 user who uses his front-facing camera regularly (beyond testing it out when he first got it).

FaceTime?
A gimmick, especially given the wifi limitation.

Retina display?
Nice, but worth $200 and 2 year service agreement?

HD video recording?
I suppose if I had kids, I might care -- but I don't. The only video I shoot on my iPhone is gimmicky 10-15 second clips to send to friends.

8MP camera?
I'm a guy. I don't feel the need to take pictures constantly just to show what an interesting life I lead to all my Facebook friends. I take pictures of funny things to send to friends, none of which require anything beyond what is already in the iPhone 4.

Add an optical zoom or a real flash and maybe I'd be interested.

New design (to them)?
You mean I too can own a phone that shatters from 3 foot drops? Fantastic!

Twice as much RAM?
Again -- gives no access to new iOS features, opens up no new possibilities for apps on the app store.

Gyroscope?
Does what, exactly?

Access to improvements in optimized apps?
I've yet to encounter an app that my 3GS couldn't download or couldn't run. When I start encountering apps like that, I'll grant you the point. But I'll all but guarantee you those kinds of apps won't start popping up so long as the iP4 remains popular.

What jump?

iOS 5 and virtually every app on the app store already runs on the 3GS.

AWESOME, the more of you that go to Android, the easier it will be for me to jump to the IPhone and the better Chances of me selling my Droid Phone.

Why would someone buy your droid? That came out like 3 years ago.

My suspicion is that they originally intended to launch a 4s in mid-year, as normal, to stay in line with the mostly two year phone contracts. But they had issues with design/supply/parts/Japanese earthquake and decided to push it back in line with iOS5 and iCloud,

There's no evidence of a design or supply issue but I think perhaps you nailed the real reason.

I suspect that the iPhone 5 won't be a huge change over the 4 in hardware because the real changes are software based. iOS 5 is way different than iOS4 in a lot of key ways. Put a couple of minor hardware bumps (which would actually be major for those finishing a two year contract with a 3gs) and a killer software upgrade AND this new syncing etc together and you get a much bigger deal.

And launching all of that together could be why the shift in time table. Plus it has the added bonus of being a huge event right after Jobs stepping down, which was likely not as much of a surprise to Apple as it was to the public. I think they knew it was coming the moment he went on leave this year. The only question was the date. At the time of the leave announcement they probably figured he'd be gone for a couple of months, come back for a bit and clean things up before going. Instead plans changed. A huge launch like this will be a great PR event to shut up the last of the naysayers over Cook being 'no Steve Jobs'. They will be too busy talking about the success of the launch.

Wow what if those cases with the new form factor are for a bigger iPod and not the phone. Wow. That might make me get an iPod. Hmmm......

There's no evidence of a design or supply issue but I think perhaps you nailed the real reason.

Apple have been used to updating phone hardware and iOS on an annual cycles. But the cycles were out of sync. The phones coming in mid-year, and iOS updates were arriving in the Fall.

The only way to get them back in sync was to delay the phone. This long gap was not forced on Apple by circumstances. It was a planned commercial decision.

And with a planned 16 month hiatus to update hardware, it'd be dumb not to use every second to give the phone additional market strength. In that time the iPhone engineers didn't just rev the iPhone - I think they also created a second lower-cost line - designed specifically for the contract-free market.

A lower cost phone has massive implications for market share in some territories. There are countries where phones are sold without contracts. In these places iPhones are way too expensive - and the market is wide open to cheaper Android handsets.

If I am right. Apple comes out of this hiatus firing on both barrels.

The overall iPhone 4 design isn't for me, not to mention that I personally do not want to buy 18 month old hardware. So instead I suggest the following scenario which better meets my needs...

Apple comes out with their redesigned iPhone 5 (new enclosure, same size). Meanwhile, those who want a larger screen can go with an Android or Windows phone.

question is if the cases leaked for the iphone 5 are true and it is a bigger screen what would you do then? im pretty sure you'll stick with the iphone 4 or like the people who cry foul for a bigger screen buy it up anyway because its an "apple" product.

Apparently, Apple cares enough to launch a metric ton of lawsuits when the competition does it to one of theirs.

No seriously, the iOS 5 stuff isn't even better than the competition it is ripping off, it's just blatant rip offs.

And you know autocorrect fails you how exactly if you're not looking ? The keyboard is on the same screen as the text you're typing. So either you're looking or you're not. On the other hand, I am typing this out without even looking at the screen or the keyboard on my nice hardware keyboard connected to my work PC.

I don't care if Apple cares enough to sue. That has nothing to do with me. Point is, they have the best products, even if they're doing something wrong elsewhere in the organization.

"Looking" at the keyboard means actively looking at it. I'm not. If you don't believe me, I also control my Apple TV with Remote.app, and I look at the TV while typing.

I'm not making the claim that the iOS keyboard is better than or even as good as a real mechanical keyboard. I am also a keyboard snob. I like my aluminum Apple keyboard just fine, and there's a Model M on the tray in my desk for when I want to get "serious". I'm just saying the iOS keyboard implementations are excellent, and autocorrection works well enough that you can actually *touch type* on the iPad, even though it lacks tactile feedback. That's an amazing accomplishment.
