I'm sorry, but did you just tell him that the right thing to do is to return it? And may I gently ask, who are you to say what's "right"? He'll do whatever he wants. Just because in your eyes, it seems right, doesn't mean it is.

You have quite an ego...

Bad troll is bad.

I'm not sure which planet you come from, but on Earth, stealing is considered to be 'wrong'. Eg., if I break into your house and steal your TV, that would be considered 'wrong'. I'm sure you'd agree. Or would you say, 'oh, it was right for HIM, so it's okay'?

I've personally witnessed a situation where an Apple Mac was accidentally sent to the wrong address (another customer). The person who was responsible for sending it back decided to keep it - Apple found out, and this person was never able to deal with Apple again. And he still had to return it.

To be clear, the right thing to do is let Apple know that you think there's been a mistake and allow them to decide whether to take the laptop back. After all, its quite clear it is their property and anyone who can tell right from wrong will realise that just because something arrived on your doorstep does not make it yours - legally or morally. Also, no one is telling the TS what to do - he came on here and posted asking for advice and that's what we're doing.

It is absolutely the right thing to do to at least treat people fairly, as you would want them to treat you if it were your property in this situation. And in this case Apple have already been fair to him in immediately shipping a replacement when his was delivered elsewhere.

Its not ego, its called morals.

Jeez, I consider myself to be a moral guy, but there have been a lot of guys tempted down the wrong path by :apple:'s in the past. :p

I would like to think that I would return the MBP.

As the OP is returning it, I would also hope that Apple would "reward", (insert better word, if needed), his honesty with a nice free something or other. :) I know you shouldn't expect payment for doing the right thing, but If I had lost £2000 in a wallet and someone was nice enough to return it to me, I would be nice enough to say thanks and here's some cash for your troubles. :D

Thanks for the replys. Apple told me to bring it in to a local apple store, so I'm going to go do that now.

I could be wrong but I'm betting this isn't the official company line on how to handle this and you just heard what one person on the other end of the phone thought might work best. Typically what happens with most companies is they just ask you to ensure that it's boxed up and they send a call tag for it & the UPS (or FedEx) guy shows up at your door to pick it up.

I've never heard of a company having a policy that expects you to take it to a brick & mortar store to correct a shipping mistake they made. I'd probably call and talk to someone else.

just give them a call and say they made a mistake. who knows they might show some appreciation lol (but this shouldn't be the motivating factor)

My friend accidentally put two MacBooks in his cart and ordered 2 (so he was charged for both).... not being so honest, he said that it was a mistake on Apple's part and they gave him $100 store credit for the trouble (I don't see why, but whatever.)

a) steve jobs has enough money

b) you did not commit any crime or do anything wrong. it was THEIR fault. you can't get in trouble for anything

This reminds me of the time when i bought a ZX Spectrum off ebay and got the ZX Spectrum and a gas hob. It was City Link's mistake and so i am not going to go out of my way to rectify it as a result i still have the gas hob. :D Anyone want? :p

EDIT: To keep this on topic..... Apple did agree to send you another MBP. Again, their mistake for not making sure they got the original one. If they want it back they will let you know. If they don't then i'll swap you it for a gas hob :p

If everyone took advantage of Apple's superb customer service like this, there wouldn't be any customer service. I do hope you didn't congratulate your friend on his ill-earned $100.

a) 2k to Apple is not 2k to Steve Jobs. I guarantee that losing an extra machine doesn't come out of Steve's paycheck, but it must come out of somewhere, so most likely someone who doesn't have as much money as Steve.

b) You can very easily do something wrong without committing a crime. If I see someone cross the road and get hit by a car, and then I walk away rather than calling for help, it may not be my fault, but I'm most certainly doing something wrong. Doing the right thing here has nothing to do with committing a crime or not.

Just a FYI, this could be considered a felony if you kept it. Theft of anything over $300 in value, if the owner were to press charges, would be considered a felony. Not to mention fraud, and I'm sure Apple couple come up with some other stuff once they found out they were both delivered to your address.

I've had something like this happen twice a long time ago. First time was with a $400 LVD SCSI drive. I had ordered 1 drive and had 2 delivered to my office. Not having time to deal with it, I just let it sit for a week or so and one day the UPS man came back with a pickup request from the company. Their mistake and they saved me the trouble from having to deal with it. Good for them.

Second time I had this happen was with 2 17" CRTs. They came at different times to my parents house and I wasn't living at home at the time. I had already received the first one and went back to school and by the time I was able to call the company and let them know what happened they had gone out of business. I can see why they didn't make it lol. I didn't open it for awhile longer, but at that point I had nowhere to actually send it back to so I gave it to a friend of mine.

Stop reading boudhist propaganda... :D

Return it.

If you didn't know, Apple tracks serial #s down. The moment you bring that 'lost' MBP for service, it will be confiscated and you will be questioned (and most likely look very very guilty).

Questioned but not guilty. He didn't make them ship 2 mbp, that's their mistake. He'll just have to explain...but this is all a
misunderstanding anyways, there's no criminal charges that cn arise
from this.

How is it theft or fraud? His act to request a correct shipment is neither of those, and it's still Apple's action that lead to this.

Forget about all the scenarios about "will they catch me or not if I keep it with all the variations and angles of that sick type of thinking..." etc, etc, etc....

There is only one clear course of action and hopefully you shouldn't even have to think twice about it.

If you consider yourself as someone with moral integrity, as I'm sure you do, the only answer is to return it. Anything else shouldn't even cross your mind... ugh...well, ya, ok... that's in a perfect world... but, in our real world, a couple nano seconds is ok...;) then return it... hahaha

Good karma feels good...!!! When you look at yourself in the mirror everyday and really like the person you see, life is wonderful and happy. That's a HUGE payoff...!

But then... I'm telling you something you already know... because you are already a good person... :D

When children grow up, hopefully they will come to understand this philosophy, thus becoming better human beings feeling good about themselves... :D

Looking back over my years, 65 now, I wish I had learned this way of thinking and living a lot earlier in life. It would have saved me a lot of pain, unhappiness and been a lot easier.

Hope springs eternal, in every moment we change. Where we go and what we do with that change is totally up to us. We are truly the "artists of our own lives" and it is never too late to "change our course in a new direction"

Signed... Dr FeelGood.... :D

Just my humble opinion...

The last person I knew personally who committed larceny and thought he got away with it was decapitated by a sharpened frisbee as he walked through a bad part of town the next day. I can't say that would happen in this case, but you never know.

I VERY seriously doubt this actually happened!!!

Everyone knows that frisbee ninjas only hang out in rich suburbia!

You are not actually legally required to return something you didn't order. You ordered one macbook pro so you paid for one. If both seem to have gotten to you you have the right to keep both.

Take a look at the "unordered merchandise" laws.

According to the federal trade commission "If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift."

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/products/pro15.shtm

You don't even have to notify them that you received both.

Actually...

Q. What should I do if the unordered merchandise I received was the result of an honest shipping error?

A. Write the seller and offer to return the merchandise, provided the seller pays for postage and handling. Give the seller a specific and reasonable amount of time (say 30 days) to pick up the merchandise or arrange to have it returned at no expense to you. Tell the seller that you reserve the right to keep the merchandise or dispose of it after the specified time has passed.

Yep you were right. I went in to the apple store with it and they told me that is what I have to do. Still have not received the email from them though about it, and I'm moving tomorrow (although my brother is still living in the house so he will take care of it).

I got a $25 store credit. SPENDING SPREEEEEEE
