Yep you were right. I went in to the apple store with it and they told me that is what I have to do. Still have not received the email from them though about it, and I'm moving tomorrow (although my brother is still living in the house so he will take care of it).

I got a $25 store credit. SPENDING SPREEEEEEE

You did the right thing :)
I would've kept it, then became guilty. Then return it

a) steve jobs has enough money

b) you did not commit any crime or do anything wrong. it was THEIR fault. you can't get in trouble for anything

A) What difference does it make to you or anyone else how much money Steve Jobs has? He worked for his money just like you are supposed to. However, with this statement, I bet your one of Bama's followers and want to spread the wealth of others around.

B) You right. The OP didnt commit a crime. And hasnt done anything wrong yet. However he could face a civil lawsuit if the laptop is not returned. Is that not trouble? Or is it you have so much money you dont consider lawsuits "trouble"?

Try to return it. As along as you attempted to return the product, if they later question you, you'll be able to have evidence to prove that you tried. This probably won't be worth the hassle in the long run.

Yes, that strategy is working so well for a certain individual who found a certain prototype phone :p

Thanks for the replys. Apple told me to bring it in to a local apple store, so I'm going to go do that now.

I Would give em a call , tell them exactly what happened :) and do the right thing. :)

We are All Being watched and judged ;)

Do the right thing and return the extra one. You did not pay for it, so technically it is not yours. dont you think youd feel guilty keeping something that doesnt belong to you?

Seriously are you honestly taking the mickey? It is the right thing to do, by normal decent people who have morales and scruples. You get nothing in life for free, every thing has a price. Sorry, I do not normally get involved in these discussions but felt I had to reply.

To be clear, the right thing to do is let Apple know that you think there's been a mistake and allow them to decide whether to take the laptop back. After all, its quite clear it is their property and anyone who can tell right from wrong will realise that just because something arrived on your doorstep does not make it yours - legally or morally. Also, no one is telling the TS what to do - he came on here and posted asking for advice and that's what we're doing.

It is absolutely the right thing to do to at least treat people fairly, as you would want them to treat you if it were your property in this situation. And in this case Apple have already been fair to him in immediately shipping a replacement when his was delivered elsewhere.

Its not ego, its called morals.

Good for you. Thanks for giving me a little more hope for ethics in the 21st Century. :)

You did the right thing by returning it. Bravo.

But I really hope Apple will somehow just let you keep it ;-)

If everyone took advantage of Apple's superb customer service like this, there wouldn't be any customer service. I do hope you didn't congratulate your friend on his ill-earned $100.

a) 2k to Apple is not 2k to Steve Jobs. I guarantee that losing an extra machine doesn't come out of Steve's paycheck, but it must come out of somewhere, so most likely someone who doesn't have as much money as Steve.

b) You can very easily do something wrong without committing a crime. If I see someone cross the road and get hit by a car, and then I walk away rather than calling for help, it may not be my fault, but I'm most certainly doing something wrong. Doing the right thing here has nothing to do with committing a crime or not.

+1.... Y'all give me hope for the human race... :D Well said everyone....!!! :D

Lol I love the people that didn't get lucky like this guy bring in "ethics"

Apple makes more than a billion dollars PROFIT each quarter if they sent me an exta 2k machine you bet your ass id keep it and sell it on ebay.

It's their problem that they made a mistake and made a customer wait longer for his MBP. Hes got every right to keep it and do what he wants with it if Apple didnt realize the mistake.

If I was him I would have kept it sealed for 2 weeks, and if Apple didnt ask for it back its all yours.

Cant believe you caved in to all these jealous idiots crying ethics.

first of all, they will eventually figure it out, guaranteed. then they will charge you the extra computer. i can't believe so many of you are telling this guy to keep the computer. do yourself a favor and call Apple to let them know the situation, my friend.

one word to all who think he should keep the computer, "HONESTY". have you heard about it? its pretty cool how the concept works people.

i feel sorry for you.

Return it.

If you didn't know, Apple tracks serial #s down. The moment you bring that 'lost' MBP for service, it will be confiscated and you will be questioned (and most likely look very very guilty).

Wrong. Apple isn't the police. No one expect the law can question you. There might be issues getting the warranty honored, however. Sell it for parts? I'd keep it for awhile (2 Months) and see what happens.

I'm sorry, but did you just tell him that the right thing to do is to return it? And may I gently ask, who are you to say what's "right"? He'll do whatever he wants. Just because in your eyes, it seems right, doesn't mean it is.

You have quite an ego...

Epic FAIL in comprehension.

WOW! Were you raised by Nazis? Anyone with an ounce of a conscious would know the "right" thing to do is return it.

I call it dignity... for me i would have to do the same thing

(again if u keep it, it urs and no one can say anything)

Cheers

Is he going to face criminal charges? Most likely not. Also this is a different situation, since the person who found the iPhone made a profit out of it. The thread starter isn't.

so getting a $2k machine isn't a profit. gotcha.

I am not taking sides here... But to all you people crying ethics and whatnot, what about this poor sot https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/905893/ who if he had of been an 'honest' citizen and accepted what Apple had of told him, he would be out of pocket almost $1000. AND he had Applecare.

Do you reach for points often? Do you honestly believe that comparing receiving a laptop one didnt pay for and was a shipping mistake and receiving a quote for a repair of a laptop when should be covered under warranty a legitimate argument against ethics? Honestly? Thats all you have?

what's karma have to do with any of this?

karma isn't some mystical force out there.. it's straight logic
if you're a wild driver and you cut people off in traffic etc. then karma dictates that you will eventually get into a car accident..
the cause of the accident isn't some sort of godlike payback for cutting someone off.. it's because of your wild driving.

i fail to see how keeping the laptop is going to give the op bad karma:confused:..

i would have kept it and sold it, the law says you can keep anything that is sent to you since it is their problem not yours. apple makes ridiculous profits and they won't miss a $2k mbp. i can't believe you listened to all the people in this thread OP. also anyone who believes in karma should have their head examined.
