Ultimately its about morals, is it the right thing to do? in my opinion no.

BTW, I believe it is legal in the US to keep unsolicited mail, but I'll have to ask my father. @OP: I guarantee you apple won't miss one Macbook in between all of the truckloads of money from the App Store. :rolleyes::apple:
 
maybe, but judging from his other posts and time on this site i would say he laid low a very long time to start scamming people. i mean he likes the dora the explorer video game. but i guess it's good to be cautious.

it just sounds like a classic "what should i do?". let me guess, he contacts apple, who tell him that he can keep it as they have no record of this (yeah, right) and then he recieves a bunch of offers for it "to take it off his hand"

op sells to many people, disappears with a lot of cash.

scam artists feed off greed. if its too good to be true, it probably is.

anyways, it should be veeeery easy to prove if true. so op, prove it.

extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof

The keep it posts doesn't bother me as much as reward posts.

There are d-bags out there, sure. They would keep it. I understand that.

But everyone who expects a reward for doing the right thing is ridiculous. You shouldn't be doing the right thing for purely selfish reasons. Doing the right thing should be reward enough. If they decide to give you a reward, then that's great, but it shouldn't be requested nor expected.
 
I find it ironic... and funny to think that some people who would gleefully keep the 17" MBP they didn't pay for, or deserve, might also be the very same people who would complain the first time something went wrong with it, and get all upset at Apple for not giving them the time of day over some cosmetic blemish... or squeaky hinge, or dead pixel...

I can just see it now.

"Waaah... Apple sux! They won't fix my laptop just because I dropped it... what kind of customer loyalty is that? When I pay $2500 for a laptop, I expect it to be perfect... forever! Well... maybe I didn't really, actually pay for it, but somebody did!"​

I think Im doing the right thing. I at least called them and let them know what they did. I didnt want someone to get fired over this. If you think apple support is good than you would send it back to. I have an iphone that was out of warranty and had a problem with it. They could of said sorry about my luck but they went out of there way and sent me a new one. Now thats care. I waited over a month for my mbp and called every day and ask why they arnt shipping it. They got in a hurry and made a mistake.
 
Well, you did the honorable thing by calling them. I honestly don't know what I would have done.

Well yes I do.

I would have sat on it for a month to see if they charged my card and if not then kept it. Or gave it to my wife. She is stuck in Vista hell.
 
They will most likely let you keep it. I mean Apple isnt going to miss a $2500 computer that cost them $1100 to make. Even if they do take it back they will probably send a free ipod shuffle or nano for your trouble and honesty. Will $30 billion in the bank I think they can spare it.

I think the knowledge that you did the right thing is totally worth whatever you'd get for the computer. If you really want to get the most leverage out of this karma, assuming they let you keep the computer, I'd utilize the proceeds from selling it with an organization like www.kiva.org

you don't want to keep it and the next day your mbp17 got burglarized and then another one got milk spilled on the keyboard by accident. lol.

well not by karma, but by logic. if you do something bad, u must feel really bad, if u do something right like helping people, even though u don't get anything, but it will make u feel much better. much better feeling being helpful to people who need it.

i'd say go for the right thing, give it back to apple. the good feeling worths much more than a few thousand bucks that the 17" costs. well at least for me..
 
Im a 25 year old grown man. And yes i would have keep it and said nothing about it. I guess thats just me. I dont see anything wrong with it. Possission is 9/10 of the law. If they want it back contact me and if i sold it already then their SOL. And if or when they try and hit my cc for the amount i would just request a chargeback or file a claim for an unatharized charge. I mean come on its not hurting them to lose one measley computer. And everybody who is saying send it back must a not be as broke as most of us or b is jelous because he got two 17's and you dont even have one.

+1!! People in this macrumors realm of anonymity, you have no idea how happy I am to see that even though there are still some people who will do the wrong thing, there are many people who would do the right thing.

sounds like u did the right thing. Worst case even if they send you a pre-paid label to send it back i'm sure you could talk them into giving you an iPod touch or something else worth selling.

Karma is something that vegans made up, heh. I'd rather think that just being honest is the reward. For the people that believe in karma, that if they do something bad it will come back to get them later, all i can say is LOL.

i also want to say that everybody is right in this situation. i did say that i would keep it but at the same time the right thing to do is to return it. doing good things does make you feel good and for that reason returning it is another alternative. to sum it up i probably would keep it but i cant blame him for trying to return it.

Have you ever opened your mailbox and found merchandise that you didn't order?

Next time, consider it an unexpected birthday present -- even if it's nowhere near your birthday!

Federal law makes it illegal for companies to send you something you didn't order and then bill you for it.

Winnie H. answered her door and found a deliveryman there with a big box for her -- a box she hadn't ordered.

Inside were books and a bill for $80. Winnie mostly reads magazines, so there was no way she ordered four big, leather-bound volumes.

She was wise enough not to pay for the books, but she did spend her time and her energy lugging the heavy box down three flights of stairs and to the post office.

And, of course, she paid for postage to send the books back. She didn't have to do all that. She could have kept the books, given them to a friend, or donated them (and taken a tax deduction!)

You have no legal obligation to let the seller know that you plan to keep the merchandise as a free gift, but you probably should.

I know, I know -- even having to write a letter is an imposition.

The thing is, alerting the company that you know the law should put a stop to any collection notices headed your way.

You may even want to send your letter certified mail to create a paper trail. Sigh.

Do Your Homework:
1. If you order goods that are supposed to be "free" or "trial" offers, scrutinize the fine print to make sure you're not signing up for future shipments that you'll have to pay for.

2. If you learn that unordered merchandise was shipped to you through an honest error, write a letter giving the seller a reasonable amount of time to send a courier to pick up the items. Alert the seller that if this doesn't happen in the designated time frame, you reserve the right to keep the merchandise or get rid of it.

Where to Complain:
If a company sends you unordered merchandise and won't back off about billing you, contact your local postal inspector's office for help.


This may be along the lines of your situation, but it's your call. Do the legal thing, or do the right thing.

A simple google search would have helped you immensely, BTW.
