Im a 25 year old grown man. And yes i would have keep it and said nothing about it. I guess thats just me. I dont see anything wrong with it. Possission is 9/10 of the law. If they want it back contact me and if i sold it already then their SOL. And if or when they try and hit my cc for the amount i would just request a chargeback or file a claim for an unatharized charge. I mean come on its not hurting them to lose one measley computer. And everybody who is saying send it back must a not be as broke as most of us or b is jelous because he got two 17's and you dont even have one.

it's not about the lost MBP will hurt apple. it's about do the right thing man!.

what if this kind of thing happened to your father's business?

If they ship you a second item, or ship to your address by mistake they still can collect it -- mistakes happen and they are allowed to correct them.

I've seen news clips where companies send to police to collect the item and either return it or deliver it to the correct address.

A small company can really be hurt with some of these mistakes, with Apple it is a cost of doing business. Sometimes they let people keep it or comp another item for returning it.

The keep what is shipped to you is really to prevent a company shipping something and billing you later. Not for mistakes.

I've had banks post chunks of cash into my account more than once that wasn't mine.

They later take it back without any finders fee or nothin.

the pigs :D

KEEP IT!!!!!!......about time somebody got something for nothing!!!,i found a breitling blackbird just before christmas,in its bag, boxed, brand new,now sat on on my wrist!!!!....whoever lost it or forgot to pick it up...TOUGH!!,im sure if i lost something i doubt if i would ever see it again....oh and phone your credit card company and say you lost your card, they will send you a new one with a different 16 digit number on and the one you bought your original MBP with will no longer be valid.....

Someone worked hard to earn the money to pay for that. It was probably bought as a gift for someone who more than likely had to go without it. You have been a contributory factor to heart-ache, stress and disappointment to at least 2 people. You are no better than a common thief.

About time somebody got something for nothing?

You sound proud of yourself, I think you should be anything but for exactly the reasons robbieduncan mentioned.

As for the Original Poster of this thread, I'm glad you told Apple about it. Keep us updated on what they decide to do?

Keep it, the cost for Apple is ridiculous, they may loose a lot of units every year. Maybe somebody will be fired if you call to return it.

Unless Apple's stock control system is complete rubbish, whoever made the mistake at Apple will be disciplined whether you send the MBP back or not.

It's like the occasional story in the news about ATMs giving double money - do you think the people taking advantage are dirty thieves, opportunists or just plain lucky?

This is no different that an ad selling a brand new $30,000 car but it's listed as $3,000. A type in an ad and a company sending duplicate orders is NOT the same this as a completely unsolicited order showing up and then you getting billed for it.

You didn't pay for it.
It's not's yours.
Trying to justify keeping it in ANY way shows a lack of morals and zero character.

Please,

No one will get fired. Just a stern warning from a supervisor. They have insurance and budgets in place for mistakes like this.

They can't force the machine back from you, either through your credit card, by sending you to a collections agency, or by sending you bills. They can call you and ask for the machine back at which point you can agree to that and have them send you a self paid box to ship it back.

If you want an even clearer conscience, call back and ask for a supervisor and explain your situation. If the CS supervisor even says keep it then just keep it.

For the most part be happy that you got another machine. The unibody machines look great.

greedy things like this make diseases show up out of nowhere, just like the swine flu.

It's simple. Call Apple, explain what happened, and ask them to send a courier to pick it up at *their* cost. If they say keep it, keep it. Any other action on your part is beneath moral contempt.

Do the right thing.

Tom

Damn, free stuff. This has only every happened to be twice, gotta love newbies in the shipping and handling department. Is that what the S&H fee is? to make up for mistakes? ;-)

The most recent time I ordered a light bulb for my car, and was sent a package of 8. I now have a lifetime(as far as my car is concerned) supply of lightbulbs. I did NOT inform the company of their mistake, because I know it would have cost them more to retrieve the merchandise than it cost them to replace it. Also, I'm a busy college student in his senior year.

The only time I might have felt guilty about keeping a mistakenly shipped item was a pair of speakers I ordered online. I ordered 2, I got 4. Again, the shipping its self was half the cost of the set, so being 2 weeks away from uni finals I told myself I'd "deal with it later, unless contacted". Than summer came, I got lazy, and since they didn't contact me, and it was 3 weeks from point of receiving, I just kept them.

Now to me a computer is a different matter. That is actually an item of such value that it is worth Apple paying for shipping, and paying an employee to handle the transaction, to reclaim the item. $5 worth of lightbulbs, a company mistake that they can't (monetarily) recoup. A $3000 laptop, um, yes. :)

He has already done all that, and posted that he has done all that. So....

It a great thing what you did calling Apple. At least sees their customers take care of them. I mean, everyone makes mistakes, and at least the great care Apple gives us goes rewarded.

If you do keep it, more power to you.

The pathetic morality this world has today is astonishing! Everyone looking out for only themselves and no one else.

Okay, rant over....

I'd at least call Apple and have them send a box to return it. If they say that you can keep it then BAM you have a legal computer that you can even return to an Apple Retail Store and get a check cut for you.

Apple won't miss the $3000 price tag for that machine at all, but I think the OP should do his (place religious or moral implementation of a conscience here) a favor and at least try to do the right thing. Worst case scenario: you get to keep the laptop that you actually paid for. :)

I worked for a publisher 20 years. Every now and then somebody called saying they had received the same book 2 times. We discovered that we had been sending about 2 or 3 duplicated books every time the bill form box get finished and the operator reprinted the two last ones because they were sometimes wrinkled. Nobody blamed the 99% of customers that kept the 2 books, and nobody was fired. And the returned books were just a stock trouble becase there was no way in the system to add "specter" printouts.

First of all, I don't think you could return it without a receipt. Second of all, even if you could return it, it would still be morally wrong. Why should apple not only loose a couple thousand dollars by giving you a free laptop, but then pay you another couple thousand dollars when you return it? Sure, they get the computer back, but now they can only sell it as a used computer for much less money. That's not any less morally wrong than not contacting apple in the first place.

Ya except those books didn't cost thousands of dollars. A macBOOK pro does cost thousands of dollars.

to OP: Please update us when you get a call back from apple. I'm anxious to hear what they say. I'm glad you did the right thing.

yea but it's all relative.

and if we're talking about morals the cost of something shouldnt determine weather or not you do the right thing.

You're right. My brothers Oakley goggles fell out of his bag when we were snowboarding earlier this year. They never got it handed in; while we didn't expect it, it was still really disappointing, as I know I'd certainly hand in anything I found.

You can return it without a receipt

But you do have a point about returning it after they give it to you.

So he could just sell it on Ebay/Craigslist/Marketplace instead.
