Slightly off-topic but here goes:

See the guy in the photo? He's supposed to be a student going "back to school," yet he's using a MacBook Pro. Not a MacBook Air. And that's a good thing for Apple. The MacBook Pro is presumably a higher-margin product but it has universal appeal to consumers, students, and pros. How many non-pros do you see carrying around MacBook Pros? Quite a few I'd guess.

Same thing will happen with the new Mac Pro. It's cool enough that anyone who needs a desktop Mac will want one. Sales numbers will depend on pricing, not on the size of the "pro" market. The lower the price, the more consumers and prosumers will be able to justify buying a Mac Pro instead of an iMac. Not so much with the old-school "box full of components" Mac Pro. It had zero consumer appeal.

Apple has positioned the new Mac Pro as the Mac to have if you need pro-level power and/or you have enough money to buy the best and coolest Mac that Apple sells. Whether or not you're a "pro." (Especially if there will be one or two new Retina Thunderbolt displays for it. 4K 30" Thunderbolt display anybody?)

I'm guessing you don't have a lot of people to talk to.

So, if I buy a 21.5" base model iMac with the student discount, that's $1,249 USD, plus 7% tax that comes to $1,336.43 USD. And let's say I somehow get the full $100 value out of that gift card so it comes to $1,236.43 USD.

Or I can buy from an authorized reseller, like Amazon, and just pay $1,199 USD, no tax (this is the caveat). It was actually $1,149 on Amazon in early June.

I miss the days when you'd get $100 off MSRP, a free iPod Touch ($200+ USD), and a free printer.

Yea I think it's cuz macs have become a lot more popular among students, so they don't need to push as hard as they had to in the past.

If memory serves me correct, they will wait till after the Back-to-School promo is over and release updated models in early to mid Sept.

Anyone else want to chime in on this?

In my memory, more often than not, Apple likes to release new products at least a month after the BTS promotion ends. The BTS promotion probably helps to clear inventory (unless, like this year, new products are released just beforehand) and the 30-day wait before releasing new products ensures that no one who purchased the old model during the BTS promotion will be able to return their purchase within the 14-day window to get the new model.

About time! I got burned in '08 during the BTS sale with my current Macbook Pro when the unibody Macbook Pros were released after the sale. However, I did get a free iPod Touch (which I sold for $200) and a free printer out of the deal. Plus mine still works great. Good thing my girlfriend is in need of computer. Gotta convert her from Windows

But I will wait until the refresh this time. Gotta future-proof my purchase if I'm gonna spend another $2500+

That's the nice thing about being a teacher. I get the promotions too! I was going to buy two new iPhones at T-Mobile Saturday morning, but now it's worth it to spend the extra $20/phone to get 2 $50 iTunes cards. Woohoo!

Looking to get an 11" MBA with this offer.

Is it worth waiting until the very last day, in an attempt that Macs purchased in September may come with OSX Mavericks?

It's worth 25 bucks, so if you are really a (poor) student it's worth it ;)

Does anyone know how this worked in past years? Do you go in an Apple store and present some sort of identification or proof of you being a student?

Yeah, a student ID was enough when I got my MacBook Pro + free iPod back in 2008. It also helps if you look young, poor and underfed though!

I bought a MacBook Air last September after my HP crapped out less than 20 days into the semester. I used my student discount and got a $100 App Store gift card. I ordered online and was not asked for any proof that I was a student. I don't even think it asked for my .edu email address.

You were in the Apple educational store. Once you're in there, everything works just like the normal store except prices are a little lower. If you weren't in the educational store then you were paying retail.

I was told that you had to speak with someone on the phone, not to get the promotion, but to ensure you got the 2 year additional Apple Care support (which included phone support extended to 1 year too). Rather than risk, while I had the guy on the phone, I just ordered it, got the discount, the additional Apple Care support and App Store Gift Card (which I then sold on eBay, reducing my bill even more).

This is a good deal, make sure you get everything to which you're entitled before purchasing would be my recommendation.

Awwh, that is unlucky :( Never mind though! It's only an iTunes voucher ... and as I trial most of my music/apps from sources external to Apple ;) I have little need for it.

It's a voucher (actually a gift card) you can transfer via sale to anyone - it's got value, I sold mine within hours of listing it on eBay, got paid, sent the code to them, and received monies the day I listed it, all legal and allowed, so I wouldn't poo-poo it so quickly.

Did you get a student discount? If so you won't be saving anything with this offer. :)

And if you didn't buy it with a student discount … why not?

Once this promotion becomes official, call Apple. Their customer support is generally pretty good.

Yeah, www.cardcash.com will give you $91 for a $100 card. I found that site through Plastic Jungle, which apparently doesn't buy/sell gift cards anymore. People will usually snap them up in the Marketplace forum here too.

I was hoping that they held the BTS offer off until the first day or two of the third quarter, rather than starting it a week or two ago... to co-incide with a Haswell processor spec-bump on the rMBPs, Minis, and iMacs.

Here's hoping that the overnight tonight is a bit bigger than just BTS announcement.

I am preparing for 'back to school' on the school side, rather than the student side... and Haswell coming out in rMBP AFTER the start of the school year will not be ideal, and don't even have information enough to suggest waiting a little bit longer to get it...

Especially for the 800mbps PCIe flash storage, better performance/battery life ratio, and faster wireless internet for the future. I buy top end laptops for as much future-proofing as I can reasonably expect.

C'Mon, Apple... HASWELL THE LINEUP!!!

Meh, I was in the "wait for Haswell rMBP" boat but then I realised that life is too short and I could get a good deal on a refurb. Typing this on my gorgeous rMBP. I don't think we'll see the Haswell ones until about September/October. They're likely be announced alongside the next iPhone or at the rumoured iPad event in October. I don't think Apple will use BTS to launch a brand new line.

You are assuming Mavericks ship date will be announced before the end of the promo. That is a big if. If it pays off you save $25. If you are wrong you cheated yourself out of a new computer for 2 months.

A better deal than the back to school is to buy a refurb.

I just bought a 13" MBA with 8GB RAm and 512GB od SSD for $1449.
That same machine new is $1849. Of course if you want the better battery life of the latest released machine then this won't work. But right now the price of refurbished, last generation MBA is running about 25% off the new price.

Much better than $50 off and a $100 gift card....

Anyone know if Best Buy will honor this in any sort of way?

When I got my MBPr last year, they actually gave me the Apple $200 off plus my choice of the $100 App Store card or an additional $100 off thanks to a coupon they sent me. So, yes they will honor the deal.
