I'm actually more surprised how they use cheques everywhere in the US.
Checks in the US were very universal and nationwide, unlike Europe where checks and giro didn't cross national borders, at least very well. That is, in the US it almost worked well. So in 2003, the US overhauled the check clearing system with Check 21, where checks were scanned and became electronic transactions. This led to the system working good for consumers with mobile deposit. Also computers became adept at reading handwriting, and they figured you could send the rest of the images to India for keying, so there's little manual processing today.
Canada took another 11 years, late 2014, to digitize their check system, and I believe Europe is still fragmented in that regard.
