What’s the problem with AppleTV+? For mediocre Sci-Fi stories like “For All Mankind” and “Silo”, it can depicts it extremely well, but, for real masterpieces like “Foundation”, it simply ruins it into sh*t?!!!
...because the original
Foundation trilogy may be a classic of written SF beloved by many, but was completely useless as the basis for a TV show without completely "re-imagining" it. I actually quite like this new space opera about 'the Genetic Dynasty" but it's being hamstrung by having to pretend to have something to do with
Foundation.
By a coincidence, I happen to be re-reading
Wool (book 1 of what is now being called the Silo trilogy) alongside watching the show, and they have made a
lot of changes to the story - looks like its mainly to inject more action & delay resolving part of the mystery while
also padding out the first half of the first book (which is already fairly slow-moving) to an entire season. I guess that
Wool isn't such a beloved book as
Foundation so people aren't complaining.
Its not just Apple - Netflix completely dropped the ball with
Altered Carbon (first series was OK but completely re-wrote the backstory so none of the later stories that relied on Kovacs being a mercenary
anti-hero would work) and
American Gods started brilliantly then hit pause on the plot and just kept repeating itself. One problem seems to be that Hollyweird has gone from trying to squash a ~600 page novel into a 120 minute movie to trying to pad it out to
three 8-hour seasons of long-form TV.
