Seriously did anyone really think that the new big phone was going to be the same price as last years X? Of course not. And its "only" $100 more. Same as in the past.
I think a lot of this price whining is faux sticker shock. Everyone knew it's was gunna be pricey and here we are today.

I am very undecided about my wife’s phone. I think I’ll stick with the X for one or two more years. She has a 7, it works but the camera is definitely inferior to the X’s/XS’s, and I really like FaceID. Very very undecided.

The XR might be a good fit for her. Both the 7 and the XR has a single lens system but the XR is more on par with the X/Xs. The inclusion of portrait lighting and depth control are pretty awesome for the budget iPhone. The front-facing camera on the XR is on par with the X/Xs.

My wife is going to stick with her iPhone 6. I, owner of an antique iPhone 5, am toying with the idea of getting a refurbished 7, which is like, a bit more than one third the cost of the new phone. Like you, I am very, very undecided. And I'm talking about upgrading to a 7, lol!

iPhones and all other phones are already packed with features more than a users needs and the trend is moving towards software. Brace yourself for minimal updates to iPhones in the next coming years in terms of new features. It will all be better CPU/Camera and nothing drastic for the next 5-6 years.

The 7 was a flagship only two years ago, and it’s just as good a phone today as it was then. Just because a better/faster model is available now doesn’t take away from the excellence of the 7 series.

Especially considering the refurb price, it’s a great phone at a great price—it’s just no longer Apple’s “best”.

We actually just decided :)
We’ll keep our current models, finish the IUP payments, then pass our current models (X, 7) to our two teenagers next year (they have an SE each) and we’ll get the new 2019 models.

I'm considering keeping my 6s, with iOS 12 it seems like new again. Considering the Xr just for the bigger screen.

The XS offers quite a few upgrades over last year’s X: 4GB RAM (possibly only on the Max), better camera, smarter image processing, improved sound, gold color option, 512GB storage option, IP68 water resistance, Dual SIM capability, faster FaceID, faster wireless charging, faster CPU, up to 50% faster GPU and the machine learning neural engine co-processor goes from 2-core/600 billion operations per second to 8-core/5 trillion ops/sec—over 700% faster.

Also stronger glass, better battery life, more frequency bands (including T-Mobile's 600 MHz LTE Band 71), a faster radio (gigabit downloads) and stereo video recording via 4 microphones.

Lots of improvements, with no increase in price. Also available, for $100 a 6.5” display instead of last year’s 5.8”.

So what exactly were you expecting that would change your opinion of the XS being a “rubbish upgrade”?

Outside of the 6.5" $100 size option, none of the above features actually translate to any meaningful improvements in real life usage.
contrast that, for example with the update from the 5s to 6.... or even more recently, 7 to 7s(8)...

the year over year upgrade have always been slight, but this year has to got to be the slightest of them all.

How is it two phones in one? Are they referring to fitting two 3.5" screens in one 6" screen minus the notch?

999$ or 1099$ for a phone with 64gb of non extendable storage, nice!!!
but i need more storage because of the powerful A12 bionic to run machine learning on my big data sets !!

Does anyone know anything about the “Gigabit LTE” that comes with the iPhone Xs and Xs Max? I found the iPhone X and all of the iPhones that moved away from Qualcomm modems to provide dreadful speeds and coverage. Where I used to get 4 or 5 bars, I now get 1 or 2 most of the time with speeds far lower than they should be.

Could this new chip that the new phones are using solve that? If so, that alone would be the upgrade.

The Intel modems in the Xs are one reason I am hanging on to my Qualcomm-based iPhone 7 for another year. I suspect that by next year (and if not then, certainly by 2020), Apple will be designing their own custom modems.

I heard too many bad things about the Intel modems in the 7, 8, and X to chance going with the Xs when Intel modems are the only option with the Xs. I’m pretty sure I read recently that Apple told Intel earlier this year that they would not be using them as the supplier for 5G modems down the road and that caused Intel to halt their development of their 5G modems.

I think Apple went with Intel this year simply because of their feud with Qualcomm; and I think Apple really couldn’t care less if the cellular performance is not as good as previous years’ Qualcomm-based phones as long as this year’s phones are “good enough”.

This is the direction smart phones will continue to go. As more and more people turn to their phone as their main device, even over a laptop or desktop for many situations, the prices will keep going up. The days of cheap phones are becoming a thing of the past. And if you're buying Apple, it's going to be at a premium, as always.

Can someone explain,

Why bokeh and adjustable depth effects are only available on the XS and not on the X?
The camera hardware is exactly same, at least listed same on apple's website.

Sadness.

It's nice, but it's too expensive... I guess I'll upgrade like I do with my computers now, use it till it dies, they are basically the same price now.
No iPhone has been proven to be too expensive for the general market...yet.

This is where I’m at. If something catastrophic happens to my 8, I’ll spring.
