Rubbish update this year. First time I've not upgraded since the 4

What planet are you watching this from? The new phones are A-mazing! Just expensive. Nothing else is wrong with them. The price is justified compared to the engineering that went into them, but still out of reach of so many people.

Just wait until we get some benchmark tests... then we'll all know just how truly awesome iPhones are in the grander industry!

Well, smaller incremental features is always nice to get, these just don’t justify an upgrade from X in my opinion, except the display size for the disappointed ones that wanted it last year. I will only upgrade to the next iPhone, if the X get noticeable slow in many areas, or break, or if Apple release a iPhone with some big must have features, or if I decide to have a bigger display some day. And if Apple don’t release “must have” features with the next generations, I’ll wait a few generations till these smaller features accumulate and feels like a big package of smaller improvements. I had the iP7Plus before the X, and currently I don’t miss that bone.

I'm still using an SE (which has 2016 internals) and there's _no_ slowness. iOS 12 is supposed to bring even better performance, so yah... not worried at all, nor should you be. If you have a X and it's still doing everything you need, there's zero reason to upgrade this year or next year or the following. Yah, it will be fine in 3 years, too.

I think that the upgrade is worth for the screen size alone for those who were disappointed with the X screen size. That counts as a huge feature in my opinion.

Love the ending of the `108 minute`video with the Tim Cook Memoji being cut off while he's talking. Ha! Ha!

This, I'll never understand. How could someone be -disappointed- with the X's screen size? Really? "Disappointed"? Is that really the feeling? But I'm glad you have your "phablet" screen size now, so we won't hear this again. :p

Not worth $1100? Do you realize what these devices can do? Do you understand how much technology and engineering are packed into these small enclosures?

I mean, to each their own, but you should say the cost isn’t worth it to YOU. It’s definitely worth it to a lot of other people.

You can do soooo much on this device. It’s way more than a phone. You may want to pay $300 or whatever for it, but it’s worth way more than that.
theres nothing revolutionary from a 7+ in these. the prices are insane from the jump from the 5's to the x's almost double.
The only thing apple seems to want to charge more for is the oled. they think its worth the 300$ price it is to replace them...
Dont break the back glass that will be over 500$ to fix. you think that is justified. give me a break.

Lol people making excuses to not want the phone.

If you don't want it that's fine but just day that. It's pricey but x and X's are same price as last year's. Same as when the 8 was priced same as the 7

I find it too tall and narrow, so it’s not as enjoyable to consume media as a larger screen.

The XS offers quite a few upgrades over last year’s X: 4GB RAM (possibly only on the Max but purported to be on the 5.8” XS too), better camera, smarter image processing, improved display (10 bit HDR?), improved sound, gold color option, 512GB storage option, IP68 water resistance, Dual SIM capability, faster FaceID, faster wireless charging, faster CPU, up to 50% faster GPU and the machine learning neural engine co-processor goes from 2-core/600 billion operations per second to 8-core/5 trillion ops/sec—over 700% faster.

Also stronger glass, better battery life, more frequency bands (including T-Mobile's 600 MHz LTE Band 71), a faster radio (gigabit downloads) and stereo video recording via 4 microphones.

Lots of improvements, with no increase in price. Also available (for an extra $100) is a 6.5” display, instead of last year’s 5.8”.

So what exactly were you expecting that would change your opinion of the XS being a “rubbish upgrade”?

What he's talking about is the specs you've listed are technical specs that don't actually have any real impact on the end user experience.

I tend to agree, nothing compelling in the above that would want me to upgrade as well.

Interestingly, the iPhone XS is $50 more expensive than the iPhone X last year (in Australia).

And the price of the fully kitted out MAX. Oh lordy help me please! Forget it! We're talking laptop prices.

Sadly, not many compelling reasons to upgrade for me other than the bigger and higher quality screen. Fortunately for Apple, those were good enough reasons and they’ve got my money.

They forgot to mention its core feature that it was designed for.
Its ability to make your wallet a lot lighter, more than its predecessors.

In other words, Apple just screwed up last year by choosing small screen size for iPhone X.

Good for you. Just because you're not upgrading doesn't mean it's a "rubbish update." In fact, it's a very significant update given a new size phone was released (two actually) which has only happened twice before in Apple history. Also a killer new chip, second gen FaceID and so much more.

Yeah, it's an S cycle, but it's refinement of an already good device. Perhaps that's why the "S" updates almost NEVER have major teething issues.

From a 7+?!

You’re getting:

Fast Charging
Wireless Charging
Faster CPU, GPU & Neural Engine
Improved Water/Dust Resistance
Improved Stereo Speakers
More RAM
Bluetooth 5.0
Faster LTE
OLED / HDR
Faster Refresh Rate
Front Facing Portrait Mode
Up To 512GB
Stainless Steel & Glass
Bigger Screen
Fast Face ID
Longer Battery Life

None of that is worth it to you?! Lmao! I sold my 7 Plus for $600 last year and then upgraded to the iPhone X. Do the math...

The XS/XS Max are awesome devices and are even better thanks to iOS 12.

You don’t want to buy them? Be my guest, but for you to say there are no differences between 7+ and XS Max to justify the higher price is just disrespectful.

Enjoy your tech!

...I think a lot of this price whining is faux sticker shock.
I'd call it "FauxDrama", for sure.

iPhones and all other phones are already packed with features...
I agree with this...
...more than a users needs and the trend is moving towards software. Brace yourself for minimal updates to iPhones in the next coming years in terms of new features. It will all be better CPU/Camera and nothing drastic for the next 5-6 years.
...but NOT this. I really don't think the XS was a "minimal update", regardless of what so many people are writing. They really made a lot of improvements. I'm on a 6 Plus right now, so I don't really need to justify it all that much at the moment. I just need to pay off my latest purchases first. But that'll give me plenty of time to decide on gold or black and 256GB vs. 512GB.

We actually just decided :)
We’ll keep our current models, finish the IUP payments, then pass our current models (X, 7) to our two teenagers next year (they have an SE each) and we’ll get the new 2019 models.
This sounds like a great idea to me.

Smells of desperation after not going far enough on this update.
I really don't know how you come up with desperation.

It is too big.

And it still has the camera bump.

And yes, the notch.
Wait...the phone is the SAME SIZE as the old phones. It just has more screen. How is that "too big?" And really, you're complaining about a "bump"? Once you put it into the case, the camera is actually concave. And the notch, the notch. Puh-lease. If you don't want an Excess (yes, I'll call it that, 'cause that's fun), then why not just get something else? I think you should just let it go. Let...it...go... :)

Same here. But cats and/or dogs can be pretty hard on cables. Hardly Apple’s fault though, so the “joke” falls very flat.
I don't know what's up with the complaints about wires fraying. I've never had that happen and I have scads of charging cables at home, in the car, at work, and in my backpack.

Yeah, I use Airpods, but not because wires fray. They're just easier to carry, with their case, so I almost always have them on me. That's handy if I get a private call while I'm walking around say, at Sam's Club or Kroger. Or standing in line at the DMV.

I'm making the jump from a 6 plus to an Xs max (ugh...hate the name).
I love the name. I suggest we all just embrace it and call it by name: My Excessively Excessive Max. Hehe. :D

So subjectively you are trying to refute and deny other users objective arguments. How nice of you.
I deny all of your accusations! Wait, what was the question again?

I really like this post a lot. There's a lot of whining going on, but the Excessively Excessive Max and it's little brother the Only Slightly Less Excessive really do have a lot of features in them. Stunning, when you think about it all.

I think that the upgrade is worth for the screen size alone for those who were disappointed with the X screen size. That counts as a huge feature in my opinion.
I agree.

I'm looking for better pics of the gold color. I may visit an Apple Store on the 21st to see what they have. Not worried about that delaying my shipment. I've often thought that regular gold would be nice combined with white, and when they came out with the Rose Gold, I was very disappointed. Now the gold is out and looks good in pictures for now...and the other color is almost a non-issue because the face is all screen now and virtually borderless.

I'm thinking of getting a gold 10 Maximum Excessive along with a watch in black.

Thank you! It’s baffling to me that people would rather use a 6+ over an XS Max and don’t see the differences lmaooo.

I seriously am astonished.

People use their smartphones all day everyday. They’re capable of so much. Old iPhones also hold their value very well. And people are really up in arms about the price and have the audacity to say that the phones are garbage and aren’t worth the price?! Whattttt! Lmaooo.

My anecdote: I swam with it for 30 min in a alpine river and it still funtions perfectly.

The X from what I’ve seen seems to be hit or miss with water resistance. I suspect it may have been a QC issue or something. Mine completely died (battery and screen assembly) after less than 5 minutes in less than a foot of water. Several other online tests show the X suffering under conditions which the iPhone 7 survived just fine. Of course there are also tests to the contrary. Either way, this was clearly something they focused on with the XS in order to obtain a better IP rating, and I’m happy to see that.

they still wont approve a water damaged xs phone even though apples add shows it in the bottom of a pool.

Yes, the iPhone XS Max is expensive (more than $2,000 NZD) but then I no longer have an iPad and don’t use my MacBook Pro (13” 2013) anymore. I also don’t have a dedicated camera.

I did have to think about moving up from a 7 Plus but at the end of the day the upgrade is worth it to me as I tend to maximise the use of a single device.
