The XS offers quite a few upgrades over last year’s X: 4GB RAM (possibly only on the Max), better camera, smarter image processing, improved sound, gold color option, 512GB storage option, IP68 water resistance, Dual SIM capability, faster FaceID, faster wireless charging, faster CPU, up to 50% faster GPU and the machine learning neural engine co-processor goes from 2-core/600 billion operations per second to 8-core/5 trillion ops/sec—over 700% faster.

Also stronger glass, better battery life, more frequency bands (including T-Mobile's 600 MHz LTE Band 71), a faster radio (gigabit downloads) and stereo video recording via 4 microphones.

Lots of improvements, with no increase in price. Also available, for $100 a 6.5” display instead of last year’s 5.8”.

So what exactly were you expecting that would change your opinion of the XS being a “rubbish upgrade”?

I suspect the faster FaceID is due to the 4GB of ram and the A12 chip. Phil made sure to highlight faster FaceID, though I don’t remember him mentioning it for the Xr model. As the rumours mentioned the Xs and Max have 4GB ram and the Xr 3GB of ram like the 2017 X.

FaceID’s speed was the biggest sticking point for me last year, hence I returned it. I hope fast FaceID is on par tight TouchID 2.

Just... no. We are supposed to know how much tech costs and if it's worth it, because by now we are "tech savvy," right? To me, these devices are extremely expensive. The Watch series 4 seems like a worthy upgrade, and that ECG feature seems very appealing to people like me that monitor heart reate/health... but iPhones... nope. They are very pretty, but that's it. Not worth $1,100 bucks.

I hope they release touchless wireless charging soon. I really wish they jumped to that and skipped over Qi charging.

Love the Shot On iPhone video. Always wondered how they make they're beautiful imagery.

There’s nothing in the list compelling enough to make me want to upgrade. I love my X and will have it for years to come. 256 GB gives me enough space for everything I want on the device if I can’t stream. I plan on staying with it for at least 3-4 more years even though I’ll have the option to upgrade. There’s something nice about getting the phone bill back below $100 a month.

I don’t know what killer app or feature might come to compel me to upgrade. The only thing I could think of would be massive improvements to Siri but here’s to hoping developers embrace Siri shortcuts because as a beta tester it sure seems like it could be a game changer if enough developers buy in.

It's nice, but it's too expensive... I guess I'll upgrade like I do with my computers now, use it till it dies, they are basically the same price now.
Agreed. Honestly I rather wait a bit for BOGO carriers promotions. That's the time to get an iPhone IMO. Paying the price of a MB it its a joke for a phone. I love iPhones but this is too much. Apple lost a bit of their minds on this price structure but since people are paying they are smart to capitalize on it.

I'm considering keeping my 6s, with iOS 12 it seems like new again. Considering the Xr just for the bigger screen.

I've had a 6S since only a few months after it was released. Even with iOS 11 it doesn't seem old. I expect it will be perfectly usable for a few more years.

However, since I really wanted a non mechanical home button; water resistance; wireless charging; and support for HEVC and HEIF; and since the price of iPhone 8 dropped by $100 and since the Product(RED) version is so sharp looking, I went ahead with the upgrade.

My still-perfectly-good 6S will be inherited by a family member.

Some of the best apple videos have done in a while..
  • Biggest screen on an iPhone ever
    • Sounds like something Donald Trump would say.
  • Super durable all-glass design
    • Oxymoron
  • More water and dust resistant
    • Just don't try to claim a replacement if it gets wet
  • Now in Gold
    • Yay!
  • Face ID is even more advanced
    • What was wrong with it before?
  • Dual cameras are smarter
    • Let me up sell you to the only two models in the entire range that have these smarter cameras.
  • Depth control
    • What?
  • Highest quality video
    • Compared to what?
  • Smartest and most powerful chip in an iPhone
    • Well doh!, they are hardly going to put in a less powerful one. But Its not the size that matters, you should be singing the praises of what you can do with it
  • Faster wireless charging
    • Compared to who?
  • Gigabit LTE
    • Yum
  • Wider stereo sound
    • Have they bought Monster cables now as well as Beats?

You really buy in to all that marketing BS.

all marketing BS thats the point. Its an incremental change with big BS claims.

I don’t get these jokes. I have literally only had one cable do this and that was the cable on my iPod Nano from 9 years ago.
So subjectively you are trying to refute and deny other users objective arguments. How nice of you.

[*]Biggest screen on an iPhone ever
Good for the ones that wanted a bigger X last year. Im perfectly file with the current size.

[*]Super durable all-glass design
Will break like all other iPhones did.

[*]More water and dust resistant
Personally I have no usage for it, but good thing, just don’t justify a upgrade from X.

[*]Now in Gold
Hmmmf, not my color

[*]Face ID is even more advanced
Not relevant, the previous FaceID works nice, too.

[*]Dual cameras are smarter
Hhmmf not relevant, smarter in what way?

[*]Depth control
Very interesting, but not THE feature that makes me want to upgrade from a X

[*]Highest quality video
Not relevant, X video quality is SuperB

[*]Smartest and most powerful chip in an iPhone
Not relevant, Apps must be speed optimized for all iPhones anyway. And seriously the speed of iP7 is still good enough, btw. I have a X.

[*]Faster wireless charging
Wireless kinda sucks, I don’t benefit from it. Feels like wired and is erratic in placement.

[*]Gigabit LTE
The LTE speed limitation bottle neck comes mainly from the carrier, most people aren’t even utilizing the current highest X LTE available speed.

[*]Wider stereo sound
Not relevant, i usually have people around me, and don’t want to disturb them.

Not worth $1100? Do you realize what these devices can do? Do you understand how much technology and engineering are packed into these small enclosures?

I mean, to each their own, but you should say the cost isn’t worth it to YOU. It’s definitely worth it to a lot of other people.

You can do soooo much on this device. It’s way more than a phone. You may want to pay $300 or whatever for it, but it’s worth way more than that.

So you are trying to make yourself feel better for not upgrading, the X is still a great phone but all of the features you listed that you didn’t “care” or “need” are going to be added on the future iPhones, aren’t you going to upgrade at some point?

even though their original programming kinda sucks their aspirations in cinema do seem to be helping them improve their commercial quality.

It's easy to compare the new phone with your older models. Now, try comparing this phone to competing brands and all of a sudden the comparison does not look so compelling (especially given the price difference).

Well, smaller incremental features is always nice to get, these just don’t justify an upgrade from X in my opinion, except the display size for the disappointed ones that wanted it last year. I will only upgrade to the next iPhone, if the X get noticeable slow in many areas, or break, or if Apple release a iPhone with some big must have features, or if I decide to have a bigger display some day. And if Apple don’t release “must have” features with the next generations, I’ll wait a few generations till these smaller features accumulate and feels like a big package of smaller improvements. I had the iP7Plus before the X, and currently I don’t miss that bone.
