Lots of angry people here. Just don't buy an iPad if you doesn't work for you. Easy! Why keep complaining about it on an Apple centric forum?

Get a Mac instead?
I mean I can complain that the iPad cannot toast my bread.
Most of the people who make this type of comment forget one thing. Apple positions the iPad Pro as a viable alternative to standard computers whether they be laptop or desktop. So if it is positioned as a computer, it should be able to do things a normal computer can so. For example, have mouse support, have support for external storage, etc.

Agree - I had a lady siting next to me on a flight recently with her children web browsing as we were coming into land, so I said "I think thats supposed to be in airplane mode now, for everyones safety". What goes through peoples heads?

Honestly, if that was actually unsafe, many planes would have dropped out of the sky for that issue by now.
All day every day there are people using computers, phones etc while plane is taking off, landing, etc etc.

I think the term pretty much is the point. My Uncle died in a plane crash, maybe that makes me a little more sensitive or sensible. Alot of my family decided never to fly after that.

My condolences, however is it not a bit extreme. I mean there are people who die due to accidental electrocution, car accidents, crossing the road, natural disasters or man made disasters, that does not mean people stop using those things. I am aware that it may take a while for someone who has been in a car accident and survived to get behind the wheel, however some do over time.

I find your decision interesting.

Internal space is limited and using ‘cloud’ storage isn’t always practical.

This is why, as it stands iPad is too inflexible to fully replace the PC. Ability to use external storage is just one example.

I’d hardy call a USB stick ‘a burden’.

No need to

External storage is a burden itself. Being able to fully ditch external storage, while still accomplish your work, is optimal.

Apparently, an iPad Pro can, while charigng your pencil, make you unable to unlock your car doors sometimes too.

Who said that data on that external storage was put there by me?

Someone else has prepared some data for me on external storage that I need to transfer over to iPad.

No PC around, oh, wait: I can't. This is not an uncommon scenario either.

iOS / iPad can very well support external storage like this, but Apple chose not to because they want people to buy more expensive iPads that have greater storage capacity, which means more $$$$.

WiFi external storage, lets not blow this out of proportion. Would still be nice if the Pro model or iOS 13 supported attached external storage. :p

Some apps that are use are not available on iOS yet, thus I cannot make the transition compete.

I wonder how long until the complaining and whining comments...

Edit: LMAO!! Enclavean already got to it right off the bat smh
A fossil will stay in the sediment where it belongs. An ore will be dug up and utilized. It is a wishlist not a whine.

On my last flight I was playing games on my 12.9" iPad with a BT control pad. When I starting gaming in the 1980's I would have never imagined something like that would be possible in my lifetime. It's a fantastic device.

Funny how there's so many here that conveniently chose to ignore that.

I suppose it does give a few dozen here the opportunity to get frothed up with indignation and faux outrage.

You should report the problem with detailed steps and sample spreadsheet, looks like a software problem they can easily fix if they see it in person.

I did provide examples to both Microsoft and Apple. Sadly, Microsoft was the only one that provided at least a lame excuse for not developing better software, especially since they expect payment for their Office 365 software. I don’t mind paying for software or quality hardware, but MS (Office 365) should provide the same user experience for both Microsoft and Mac users. Apple should demand it or they shouldn’t allow MS to publish crippled versions of Office for iOS and MAC OS.

As for your comment concerning “old school” computing, yes, Apple is moving away from this concept for sure. Change is inevitable, good or bad. Didn’t say I had to like Apple’s direction and maybe someday I won’t be visiting Macrumors because I will have moved back to Windows, Linux, or something better.

Getting back to iPad Pro and Apple’s attempt to show videos of what an iPad Pro is capable of........ Well from what I saw in each video, the cheapest iPad released in early 2018 (I call the student tablet) can do all of these tasks easily. No need to spend $800 to $1700 on the Pro version. Not until they develop a Pro version of iOS with the apps that can take advantage of the mighty A12X Bionic chip set. I bought into Apple’s Pro version back on 2017 with the 10.5” Pro version and tried to integrate it into every computing experience I could every day. Sure, iOS 11 did have some improvements to the multitasking capabilities, but iOS 12 was a huge disappointment when it comes to Pro version capabilities. Not enough changes in my opinion.

Here we are in 2019, still waiting on an iOS and the apps to utilize the Pro’s expensive price tag. I do not have high hopes that iOS 13 will even come close to maximizing the potential of the new 2019 iPad Air (version 3) much less the 2018 Pro versions.

Now I will tell you what it cannot do:

- Replace a computer/Mac.

You mean it cannot replace a Mac for your use case? Can certainly believe that, even though you have not told use what your use case is.

- Lower the volume without occupying a good portion of the screen.

You mean lower the volume without covering a bit more than 1.5” square for a short time?

- Transfer files wirelessly.

I transfer files wirelessly to my Mac, other iOS devices all the time using AirDrop and/or messages. I also transfer them to iCloud and DropBox. Always wirelessly.

- Open several documents at the same time.

Split screen works quite well for opening several different documents at the same time.

- Work on more than one spreadsheet at the same time.

Cannot do that in Pages and I believe you that you cannot do it in Excel.

- Connect freaking headphones.

I use my iPad Pro with Bluetooth headphones all the time. One can also use USB-C headphones and USB-C to 3.5mm adapters. All work quite well.

- Run professional software for anything other than drawing.

Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Pages, Numbers, Luma Fusion, and about a million enterprise apps for a million pro functions, all seem to be professional software.

- Run full on Matlab, X-code and many engineering applications a pro really uses to get work done.

You mean that some engineers, developers, and mathematicians use? Sure. The Mac cannot run Pro Engineer either and has never been able to do so. Not sure that means it is not a pro machine.

- Browse webpages that rely on horizontal and vertical scrolling (there is a website I have to use daily that my iPad doesn’t support, so even for browsing it cannot replace my computer).

Have not experienced that, so I cannot really comment.

- Play all sorts of video and audio files natively.

Not sure what you mean by natively. Only using CoDecs that ship with the OS? Same is true for many systems (including the Mac and Windows.

- And many more.

I am sure of that.

It has replaced my MacBook for most of my use, especially when traveling. I love the LTE connectivity and the long battery life. The super low weight is great as well.

I understand. However, I'm not usually fan of these. Airtravel is the safest and I think you and I both know way more people being harmed or even killed in a car accident.
My friend just died few weeks ago from a routine surgery.
All of these things happen but its all about the odds. (for me)
So yeah, I prefer to be practical :)

The video with the iPad staying on while PCs on the plane get shut down is irresponsible. The issue is WiFi or LTE connections potentially interfering with plane electronics. Granted the risk for any device is small but the FAA has declared it so. So for Apple to approve an ad with such huge misinformation simply because they want to force-feed the "it's not a computer" line is well... irresponsible. This ad really needs to be pulled.[/QUOT

Sorry, laptops fit into a category called large electronics (that also includes DVD/Blu-ray players) and are prohibited before climbing to or descending below 10,000. They also may not be stored in the seat back pocket. On the other hand FAA does not considers iPads and iPhones small electronics and may be used gate to gate. For historical reasons, LTE and Cellular services are supposed to be turned off in flight (in the U.S. and some other countries, but not in all of them). WiFi and Bluetooth maybe used gate to gate. See this as an example that discusses the current rules.

For some people.

^^^^^^^^ This exactly! My 15” MacBook Pro died a while ago, and I decided that I would not replace it until there was a MacBook Pro with at least 32GB. I got a 10.5” iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil, and keyboard case. When Apple released the MacBook Pro that supported 32GB, I passed on it and got a new 12.9” iPad Pro with the new Apple Pencil and have not missed my MacBook Pro at all. I have a new Space Gray 2018 Mac Mini as my desktop (which I might update when the new Mac Pro gets released).

My old MacBook Pro had 2TB, but when I bought my new iPad Pro, I only bought it with 256GB, as I never came close to filling my old iPad Pro. Other than camera media for video shoots, I cannot think of the last time someone handed me physical media.

I completely understand that my use case is different than that over others. I am quite happy with my iPad Pro as it is. I do not want them to turn it into a Mac with a Pencil. I understand that there are some that want that. I hope they get what they want, as long as it does not take away what I like about the iPad.

an iPad can not replace a desktop computer
unless all you do is go online read some articles
check your emails, go to Facebook etc
yes an iPad will do just fine for that

but when it comes to multitasking, when it comes to raw power, extreme performance
content creation , editing, rendering, gaming etc etc etc
sorry but the iPad doesn't stand a chance

when you need to do many things that are simply very uncomfortable to do with an iPad
then you will know or find out that mr cook had no idea what the heck he was talking about when he made that statement
sorry mr cook but an iPad can not replace a real computer

yes me too , when I'm at home using my wifi router, but what happens when a person has a data plan on their device and you are not at home or your residential internet is down, then you will have to use your device data plan and your gigs are going to run out very quickly, what happens after you used all your gigs from your data plan, isn't much easier just to copy the data to an external device, at least give the option so we can use it when we don't have any other option, is not like the person will use only usb or SD all the time, give the user the freedom to choose between many options, but apple only gives you an option, their way or the highway

I’ve always wondered about the need of fligh-mode on a plane. The risk can’t be real if they’re not collecting people’s devices. Are the risking someone using their device and maybe crashing the plane!?

A few weeks prior to WWDC, I would rather Apple tease us with hints of new features from iOS 13 in an interesting way than keep letting us feel inept. But that would demand too much creativity and effort from the marketing managers and the ad agency they hire, wouldn’t it?

I think you mean to end that sentence “for me.”

Or are a blogger, a writer and analyst, or create and edit images, etc.

Working with content creators in LA, I see many who use their iPads on set to block scenes, capture and annotate images for continuity, capture and edit rough cuts and workshopping videos. Thirty seconds of searching will find many stories of people creating web videos using Luma Fusion and other tools.

when you need to do many things that are simply very uncomfortable to do with an iPad

You keep saying that it cannot replace a “real computer” despite all the posts of people in this thread and around the web, saying exactly that it has replaced real computers for them. Again, while it may not work for you, to keep saying that it cannot work for anyone is just disingenuous.

For music production an iPad can be a cool addition (controlling synth, nice UI etc.), but I don't see it as the centre of a professional studio. Since it's called Pro – where would you store your Terabytes of samples? How would you handle all the files? Where's the Pro software?

I do get fed up with people saying an iPad should be more like a Mac. If you prefer a Mac, then get a Mac. They are two complimentary devices, one will be better for some people, and some will prefer the other. I have a MacBook Air and a iPad Pro. I do enjoy both, but if am travelling with one device, it will usually be the iPad Pro unless there is a particular task for which I need the MacBook. The MacBook can do some tasks the iPad can’t and the iPad can also do some things the Mac can’t - they are different, but both great devices.

I do think the iPad Pro is the future and as the software improves, will become the computer device for most people.

Can’t wait for iOS 13!
