Well, there are Easter parades just as celebration. It only turns political when a couple of jerks start carrying signs about how not enough Jewish people enlist in the army.

I say take all these celebrations back to their pagan roots. Celebrate Sole Invictus (The Unconquered Sun) on December 25th like the Romans used to. Celebrate the Celtic goddess of spring Eastre (that name look familiar?) in the spring like the pagan Northern Europeans did before the celebration was hijacked by the johnny-come-lately Christians.

I'm going to ask a question and this is a genuine one.

If the LGBT community receives full rights in every way as the heterosexual community already does, will there still be a necessity for these parades, activist groups and constant media coverage?

I'm not a "gay basher" or "homophobe" in any way whatsoever. However, I must admit that the constant media coverage on TV, the internet and magazines is becoming a bit much for me. It's just my personal opinion. I'd just like for the LGBT community to get what they're asking for and we can call it day. No more parades, activist groups or ad campaigns. Just society living in peace.

I just have this strange feeling that even if everything is given to the LGBT community, none of this will end. Is this not the whole point of the parades and activist groups?

Sorry, I guess there's two questions in that.

Takes all kinds to make a country. Races, Genders, Sexualities, Philosophies, Cults, etc. Even the most ignorant hateful curmudgeons have value, to serve as a constant reminder to the rest of us, of how not to be.

Thank you everyone.

Just like Rome. A great country it was.

Are you at war?

At times, if certainly feels like one is being fought. Definitely not by me to clarify.

Also, I had a question. Could you help me answer it?

I think the parades and activist groups would continue, just like they do for every subject (not just discrimination). For example, feminism activists still continue. We men are constantly accused of keeping women out of STEM just because of our mere presence as the majority.

Why would you ever get a job in a place like that, when you fully aware what they stand for!

I know what you're thinking, and they only stand for that if they severely misinterpret (maybe I should say misread) the Bible. There is no legitimate reason for them to deny people purely based on sexual orientation. They are, however, against homosexual intercourse.

What right that straight people have that LGBT don't have?

Marriage: straight and LGBT are allowed to marry anyone they want, just not same sex marriage. Straight people aren't allowed to marry other straight people either. It's not that they will, but if they want to, they're NOT allowed by the law. So we're basically equally restricted by the law.

So straight people can marry who they actually are in love with and who they want to be with, and gay people have to partake in a sham with someone, essentially, of the opposite sex in order to partake in the same things that they subsidize WITH THE TAXES THEY ALSO PAY. Why don't you just sell people as well?

Because people have bills to pay?

I'm not a bigot I just hate being reminded that minorities exist

With threads like these, I miss the days of the "down" button.

I'm gay, 32, been out since I was 18, but sadly never been to Pride. But, regarding the post about why these things still need happen? Yes, they do. Especially since I can still get called a "f@ggot" just because I was holding my boyfriend's hand at Disneyland. And mind you, this was during "Gay Days;" albeit not officially recognized by Disneyland - it still is a pretty well-known thing.

Fair enough. Maybe I should ask it more specifically. Do you think all of these parades and activist style groups will continue as severely as they are now once the LGBT community receives everything they want?

I appreciate the clever sarcasm but I'm disappointed at the attempt to answer my question.

If people want to partake in parades, and hang out in groups, sure, because that's part of everyone's Freedom of Assembly, and it's their business if they want to do it. That includes straight people who enjoy a good party with a parade of people which, incredibly, seems to lack almost any kind of violence or nonsense.

Now, is it NECESSARY for people to, say, have a Thanksgiving parade? No. but they still enjoy it. Why? Because that's their choice, and good for them.

Would it get constant media coverage? Probably not, unless the parade was big enough to drive advertising ratings. However, in the world we live in today, you can be an American taxpayer, be married in one state, and then go on vacation and not be married in another. It's ludicrous. Everyone knows it's ludicrous to operate that way. It undermines centuries of jurisprudence, and right now it's what's going on. Deal with it.

To answer your second question, no. There are protests for new laws, and some parades indirectly push new laws as well. I think those ones would stop. P.S. It's sad that people are giving you rude comments for this.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it! It's really not a big deal. I understand this is a heated debate and there are a lot of emotions involved. I think it will get out of this thread for now.

I disagree with any public parade designed to support an agenda and I believe that these parades are very intolerant towards views different then their own. This would also apply to a white pride parade, a catholic (or any other religion) parade, a straight pride parade, etc.

If the purpose of that white parade was to lobby for acceptance and equality then there would be no problem. This is not a parade about "views" it's about being discriminated against because of something you have no control over. If Christians don't want to get married/sleep with people of the same sex, don't, but give people who do want to the choice. We're you also against the civil rights movement in the 60s?

What you don't understand is that everyday is a straight pride parade. It's socially accepted for husbands and wives to be able to kiss each other in public, rub each other's backs, show affection for one another. Straight couples make up the majority of people portrayed in movies, TV, in the media, on advertisements selling us things. Every day we celebrate straight pride, because it's out in the open, it is what our society was constructed upon, and nobody judges it. This is shoved in our face every single moment of the day, from everything around us.

So when you say you are tired of hearing about a gay pride parade on the internet that you didn't go to, witness, and that didn't affect you on any level, it comes off as childish, ignorant, and uneducated. This is what we face everyday, a straight culture being shoved into our faces, with no real representation of our sexual identities. We can't see a summer blockbuster action flick with a gay couple lead. We don't see advertisements outside of city hall geared towards gay couples. A busy couple can't enjoy a meal at a restaurant without everyone staring at them and judging them. We can't get married or have sex legally in several states. We can't be out and open and talk to our coworkers freely about who we are dating for fear of discrimination in the workplace. So unless the gay pride parade is marching across your front lawn puking rainbows and Andrew Christian underwear, deal with it. It ain't affecting you at all.

For one weekend a year, gays get a safe public place to display their love and affection towards their boyfriends, husbands, wives, etc with minimal discrimination from other people. I can walk outside and hold my boyfriends hand without fear of being judged from other people or called a fa****. It runs as simple as this. While pride may be running around in your underwear drunk to some, to me it means I have a safe place where I don't have to hide a part of me.

So should pride parades and activist groups end? No. Because we will never be your equal. Whike the gay rights movement will parallel the civil rights movement and become more widely accepted over the next 20 years, there will always be homophobia, just like racism still exists. There will always be a need for a celebration of who we are.

I hope this helps answer your question since it seemed like a sincere one.

USA does not allow discrimination based on sexuality.

Oh! Then let me head to the courthouse in Dallas and get married right now... wait a minute... Oh, right... It's not legal everywhere in the USA yet.

Discrimination defined by dictionary.com--> treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit

Now that laws preventing the recognition of same sex marriage have been struck down, both straight people and gay people are allowed to enter into a same sex marriage. Straight people can now marry someone of the same sex! That means more opportunities for marrying the person you are in love with, for straight people too! Everyone wins.

Abusing the law: both straight and LGBT are abusing the law equally. We all know that straight people are abusing the law. That's nothing new. Do we have any law abusing LGBT? Yes, we have. I'm sure that any informed LGBT is aware of issues like LGBT suing pastors and restaurant owners left and right just because they don't support LGBT. What happen to minding your own business and respecting other's opinion and leave them alone? If they don't support LGBT, then just go to restaurants that support LGBT. What happen to respecting religious views? Just go to another church that support it. Why sue people when they don't agree with your life style?

Religion is a lifestyle. Marriage is a lifestyle. Gay is an orientation (gay people live all kinds of lifestyles, including the marriage lifestyle and religious lifestyle).

So you're basically saying that if a business doesn't agree with your religious lifestyle, or the fact that you live a married lifestyle, you should just go to another business.

Equality: don't mistake equality with people opinion. Everyone will have their own opinion about everything. A lot of actions were made based on people's opinion. So, if you want everyone to have equal opinion, then you're fighting a losing battle. It won't happen.
We know we will never get everyone to have the same opinion. A century and a half after slavery was abolished, there are still people that have the opinion that slavery was a good thing. It isn't a very popular opinion, and if you express it in public, you could find that there is considerable backlash. The same goes for expressing the opinion that women should not be allowed to work, or drive, or refuse any sexual request made by a husband. Expressing such an opinion will cause people to think that you are backward, or a member of certain muslim sects, or both.

Opinions about GLBT people are changing, too. It was once politically correct to opine that gay people should be castrated, or that they shouldn't be allowed to teach school, or that they should be rounded up and taken to an island. Now, expressing those opinions will just brand you as a Neanderthal.

When I was in middle/high school in the 90s we had a lot of Mac vs. PC debates. I was the only Mac guy and Mac became synonymous with being gay. We used to play hangman at lunch, and I remember one of the phrases was "Macs are gay." You could be called gay in a pejorative way for just about anything back then, but using a Mac was high up there.

It's amazing how much has changed in 20 years. I can't imagine a company 20 years ago actively supporting gay rights.

The purpose of all that coverage is to familiarize the public with the gay community, showing that they are just people like everyone else. People have an unfortunate tendency to fear things we don't understand. When things finally become accepted and mundane, the media will lose interest.
