Good lord those adverts are bad however I’m not the target audience. I must say an iPad is such a wonderful device now. I’ve owned them a new one each gen since they launched. However it was only with the Pro line and the stylus that made me go all in. What a powerful setup. I do about 75% of my work on that now as it’s much more comfortable. Combined with a Bluetooth keyboard of course.

However for long writing work I much much much prefer the new 13 MB Pro. I adore that keyboard... my hands just glide over it! Only criticism would be how easy it is to press the touch bar by accident.... needs force touch on it so one can select their desired pressure. And stick one of those linear actuator vibration doohickeys for a bit of feedback. For the love of god! *ahem* but still a wondrous machine.

AR could also be so powerful. Imagine apps that combine with the pencil so one could draw over buildings, recolour and redesign them. What a smashing future this tech could provide.

Yes, you could simply point to a building, it captures the 3d model of the environment and lets you play with it right away (or later), making it higher, skinnier, changing material, keeping the current luminosity or changing to nightime, changing the weather, wind, earthquake... Whatever.

You could even interact with a physical object that receives your commands and tries to mirror them, making it a very intuitive way of interacting with the real world.

For people with disabilities of all kind, this will become a godsend.

Can't believe the lack of imagination of many here. I'm betting they'd be the first to think that those slow vehicules that always break down are kinda of useless around 1900.

"What's a computer?"

It's that thing in your hands that your parents think is a babysitter, dear.

And apparently I guess Apple does too.

Not a fan of these ads really.. I’d prefer a more detailed software focus..

But I am happy with my 9.7 iPp, which is by far the most wonderful productivity device I’ve ever owned (as an artist). There are areas where the iPad runs rings around the competition, and it always makes me laugh when I see these constant debates about it not being for “real work.” Tell that to the artists and writers who use it as a primary device.

If it were 1900 and those were the only cars around you'd be right.

We live in 2018, there are thousands of models of fast, powerful, sleek, and reliable cars on the market. There is no place in today's market for a circa 1900 clunker.

Similarity, in 2018, there are hundreds of models of fast, power, sleek, and reliable computers on the market that are vastly superior to an iPad in every way. There is simply no reason to use a clunky, limited, crappy device like an iPad. If the modern computer didn't exist, the iPad might have some merit. Just as 40 years ago, computers had much more limited and clunky interfaces than today and we didn't mind back then, but nobody uses an Apple ][ or Commodore 64 as an everyday computer today.

Dont enjoy the latest commercials. Could be because the “what’s a computer” made her seem a little stuck up in my opinion.

One little girl made you see her as a little stuck up? Have you not seen all kids lately? Like where have you been lol. That’s part of the game for kids now it’s not just about what you have or which device it’s about bravado and machismo to follow through and not caring about anything cause data how they play.

I find that kid more annoying than the millennial douche from the Verizon ads.

Which kid, not seen the ads is he anything like the Dell douche from previous decade? See my point @acorntoy?

What better way to show off the professional features & real world applications of a fully stocked iPad Pro than by having a spoilt white kid roaming around NYC using it for trivial things. What's next a baby using an Apple watch as a teething ring.

Isn’t that what adults do with the Gold, Ceramic, or Hermés editions? Over paying to show off, ahem soothing their pride or sinking their teeth into a clique? Yes I want the ability to buy one as well for what it represents in terms of cash flow, but you catch my drift.

The gold is aluminum. It costs the same as other aluminum.

The usability of iPad depends from person to person. Many people are happy with it as a on the productive device and others (like me) need a real computer to get work done. Browsing, watching movies, checking mails are fine on an iPad, but to do serious work like programming, we need a REAL computer.

"There's no where to put the pencil when you're not using it"

(kid solves it probably without even thinking about it...)

Lmao! Best post of the year thus far. Anyone remember GarageBand into with Jobs and John Mayer? Mayer stated “I wish I had this as a teen growing up learning guitar I’d had lock myself up in my room and never come out” as Jobs jokingly said that’s an ad we’ll run.
Here Apple does one better. Maybe Microsoft will joke about this one photo for their next Surface Pro ad.

meh too hipster for an ad and shows no real usefulness of the product. Its felt like a hipster car commercial

Not the first time Apple did this. Recall the blond girl babbling on and on annoyingly about her crashing pc before getting an iBook ?!

Apple ads use to be great now they are skipable and are just as annoying as Verizon. No wonder no one watches ads anymore and one day I think the Super Bowl ads will get so bad they will even be skipped.

Clearly you don’t recall the iBook ad mentioned above.

Apple needs to look at what Samsung is doing with Dex allowing fulllinux distros for desktop-mode. Give us more macOS feature set with every iOS major launch.

If you’re interested in doing more, there are tutorials on split screen, drag and drop and Apple Files. :) With an Apple Smart Keyboard, the iPP is a highly capable device to get “real stuff” done.
By “doing more” you mean more than just watching movies, using apps, playing games, and checking email? What “real stuff” are you referring to, exactly?

Yet, was able to build massive million lines systems in the late 1980s to 1990s serving millions of customers, up to tens of thousands simultaneously, from damn terminals... What do I have to hear!

"real computer"... Shhsh. If I ever hear this kind of talk from one my engineer I'll make a point of giving him only a 12.9 inch Ipad and a top of the line terminal emulator for a week and sending him out to learn to be more efficient with his work flow and thinking more about wth he'll do and spend less time coding and writing crap.

And don't tell me people supposedly are faster now... I don't see that at all in the teams I manage (except a few exceptions). In fact, the average programmer these days is a slug compared to the guys I worked with back then when programming and computer engineering was a lot less democratic.
[doublepost=1515986914][/doublepost]Teens in the 1960s-1980s were babbling about their cars; now they love their Ipad. I see no difference, everyone loves their toys, kids, teens and adults.

Don’t know why, but the girl in that ad comes across as annoying and condescending.
To be honest, the first time I saw this person in an Apple ad I wasn't sure if it was a boy or a girl.
I say this aware of the fact that even daring to differentiate between a boy and a girl these days makes me a bit of a dinosaur.
Thing is, though, when I was a kid there were such a thing as boys and girls. We didn't realize we were right wing kkk nazis for noticing the difference and presuming "gender".

Of all the things they could have shown in the AR clip, she drops a couch next to a guy sitting on a bench?

It feels like a pretty weak punchline.

Nobody in here said you shouldn’t differentiate gender. We objected to people insulting this poor kid for her appearance/haircut/glasses/whatever. It’s mean. Honestly, I probably looked pretty similar to this in middle school. We aren’t all born fashionistas. It doesn’t mean a liberal agenda is out to get you.

Is this what you call hypocrisy? Wow....people are pretty clear around here, the iPad is not a computer, it's pretty crappy and not capable of much. The Chromebook is also a piece of junk not capable of much, but at least it has a mouse and filesystem. So crappy junk but very, very slightly better than an iPad. Where is the flip-flopping?

I guess my memory of people's past comments is better than yours. When someone says an iPad Pro is useless because it doesn't run a full OS, then turns around and says the Chromebook is fine without a full OS, then I'd call that flip-flopping.

Regardless, the iPad Pro is superior to the Chromebook, even though both are not running a "full desktop OS".

I’m a university professor teaching F2F and online, an NSF-funded researcher and author of multiple published research papers, a sculptor and exhibiting studio artist whose nine year "mapping" project is being acquired by a major museum and I am authoring essays and a non-fiction book.

I think you are capable of imagining the "real stuff" I do [the OP denied that one could do "real stuff" on an iPad Pro] as the list of activities is way too long to type. :)

Are you sure anyone has said both those things or is it possible you're getting inconsistent comments from different people confused. And something would be a contradiction if one person believed both is really two different people's different opinions.

For example, I say the iPad is a piece of crap because of it's crippled OS, and I don't say the Chromebook is fine.

There may also be google fans who just want to argue the Chromebook is better for the sake of supporting Google, and I'm certainly not in that group.

Regardless, the iPad Pro is superior to the Chromebook, even though both are not running a "full desktop OS".

I disagree that the iPad is better than the Chromebook at general tasks, but it's like arguing whether a bicycle or a tricycle is a better entry in a Formula One race. Both are so crappy that trying to rank them is just silly.

Disagree all you want, doesn’t change the fact the iPad Pro is far superior to a useless Chromebook.

Ever wonder why there aren’t any high-end photo or video Apps (as an example) for Chromebooks and why the good ones use servers to do the heavy lifting? Think about that for a second.

I don’t believe a word of what you just said. If you use an iPad Pro you must be performing juvenile tasks as that’s all they’re good for.

I have found a Surface Pro technically more capable for my needs than an iPad Pro but it is not necessarily more useable. The reason being for my use, the design of the Surface Pro falls into an uneasy inbetween spot.

Whenever I need to buckle down and type away I find the Surface keyboard too shallow and flimsy, and the weight distribution top heavy. But when I try to use it as tablet, it is unforgivingly heavy and seems to me the applications are designed for mouse cursor level precision rather than finger tip level precision.

I ended up giving away the Surface Pro and instead acquired a Lenovo Yoga 2n1 laptop with a traditional keyboard, a real trackpad and a touchscreen. Expensive but that’s what I need.

The iPad Pro does not come close to replacing my laptop but on the other hand it is great tablet and I am keeping it.

Moral of the story: I’d rather having a device doing one thing right than trying to do two things mediocrely.

The worst ever, I mean if they are trying to push this as a pro device why portray a school nerd?

Because iPads are for media consumption, tap-gaming and doodling?

I love my iPad btw.

Honestly, the only thing stopping iPad from being a full fledged workstation is the abysmal software offering.

On which planet?

This one, the one you're obviously not living on and the one that is at the opposite end of the knowitall wormhole where you are living.

Yeah, real kids stuff just like in the videos

Yeah yeah, millions of dollars a month and more stuff like I've doing since the 1980s (aka: "kids stuff" (sic) only if kids like using terminal emulators, which I know they don't... ).
Also, who are YOU calling a kid, hey, kiddo.
Got an actual point.
Make it. Otherwise it's just your own strained POV being pushed and nothing more.

Just one thing, because you really have NO clue about Engineering:

All the shell apps have one or two fundamental Problems. You can't keep connections open for longer than 3-4mins in Background. Also you are not able to jump word for word in command lines via cmd + arrow.

Very inefficient. A 299$ windows laptop would offer a much higher productivity.

Ipad Pro 12.9 is as leightweight as surface pro (each with keyboards attached)
