Personally, I think all these "analysts" do is troll websites like MR looking for ideas and then regurgitate it out as their "professional opinion".

Deep down, I think we all knew PlayBook would fail...which it has. Apple can take their sweet old time releasing iPad 3 since all other competitors models have tanked thus far. Not sure how Samsung's Galaxy 10.1 tab is doing but I can't imagine it's skyrocketing in sales. I am curious to see these new Win8 tablets and see if they're any good.

I think an ARM-based, Metro-only tablet is what the market needs for proper competition. Well done Apple! But as a consumer, I hope both the software and hardware rivals step it up.

Windows 8 looks great, and beyond the Apple hype, there are still more Windows users than Apple users worldwide. This analyst is living in the Apple bubble. If there's no competition, why are Apple constraining sales of the Galaxy Tab?

Windows 8 will do fine on pc's ... I am looking forward to it myself.

On a tablet ... competing against an iPad? No chance!

I made no claims to the contrary. But Apple sure isn't so darn sure they're dominating because then there would be no need for lawsuits. ;)

Just crush them in the market.

There are rules in copyright law that state that if you don't actively defend your IP, you lose it.

They might not even have wanted to sue Samsung, but they definitely had to, in order to show that they're interested in hanging on to their patent portfolio. Even if they lose the case, it sets up a historical precedence stating that Apple is defending their IP.

2 things wrong here :

- There are no such rules in copyright law or patent law. You're thinking Trademark law.
- The claims against Samsung are neither copyright nor trademark claims. Design Patent claims, Trade Dress claims and a EU Community Design.

The more you know...

I still have my ipad 1, its so slow, waiting for A6 :D:D
Still got my first gen as well. No planned upgrade until a high res version is released. For my wallets benefit, the longer the better- as I'm really still pretty content with it.

I think you are exactly correct. These analysts make 6 figure salaries to regurgitate rumors that anyone can access on the internet. You'll notice that as new rumors pop up often analysts opinions will also change.

Some of the competitors to the iPad would be compelling if they were significantly cheaper--but they aren't. I don't understand why a company would release a cheaply made tablet with a plastic body running a promising but half baked OS and think they can charge the *same* price as the comparable iPad.

That, and the 3G models of these tablets don't feature post paid plans like the iPad does. Even if you pay full price you're stuck with activation fees every time you want data service for a month or two.

Since these observations are common sense and somewhat obvious, there must be senior leadership at these companies which are narrowly stuck in the past. Must be frustrating to work at a place like that where the engineers and developers *know* what they need to do but are held back by idiotic leadership.

Let's all state the obvious

Whenever we are in times of no doubt at all, there's always an analyst ready to call on......

I'd rather wait a little bit more, but get a much better device not just with retina display...

P.S. make it readable under the sun.

With all due respect, that notion that 'competition' would change anything for consumers, in this specific context of iPad / tablets is laughable. iPad launched at a time when there was nothing like it, and the first iteration was already something extremely robust.
Everything 'tablet' that came after March 2010 has been *failed* attempts to catch up. Including that hypothetical Windows 8 ARM tablet you're placing your hopes on (actually, a Motorola/Google Honeycomb product would be a safer bet, for that matter... but I don't hold my breath about that either).

After iPhone 4S/5 is released, in 2 weeks, or three, or a month, or whatever. And after three or four months of complaining about the shortcomings of iPhone 4S/5, we can all focus on a year or so of multiple daily rumors about the iPad3.

So much to look forward to - it gives my life meaning.

Some ***********g life. :p:eek:

I didn't expect an iPad3 this year.
I do expect Apple to push out an iPad 3 next year and keep the competitors scrambling to keep up.

That is the key. They are in no rush as the iPad 2 is selling "like hotcakes" and is still a great machine but keeping customers happy with updates and competitors trying to figure out how they can compete when they are a stage behind.

I think they'll just release it in the March/April timeframe REGARDLESS of where the competition stands. I'm sure Apple is not fazed by them one way or the other.

I think they will try to have the iPad 3 ready, and release it the day that some competitor manages to come up with a product that has a chance to compete with the iPad 2. Nothing worse than giving the competition they idea they have a chance and then taking it away from them.

Actually I disagree that Apple "shouldn't be in a rush". While they don't need to panic I do think that they need to keep their foot on the accelerator. ....

I agree with you... no panic ... but to maintain their position they can't rest on their laurels and take their time either.

... I think they learned a valuable lesson with the iphone and the ipad2. With the iphone, they jumped out to a sizable lead but Android was able to catch up (for various understandable reasons, but still a lesson to be learned there). When they released ipad2 and others were caught flat footed, having to ditch/redesign existing products in the pipeline, this gave them a huge competitive advantage.

So the bottom line, when they're weak, press harder on their throats and don't let them breath. ...

Agree again... it's not just technology advantage either... it's also getting economies of scale quickly. Unlike the iPhone 1 (which entered into an existing smartphone market), one reason why they were able to flummox their competitors was their price (not necessarily just technology)... and to keep their price competitive and still meet profit expectations, they have to quickly get scale.

If there's no competition, why are Apple constraining sales of the Galaxy Tab?

Because the Galaxy Tab _does_ compete by copying the looks of the Apple iPad. (And all the Apple haters who claim "Apple has patented a tablet with rectangular screen" should have a look at the new Sony tablet which manages to have a rectangular screen and look completely different than iPad or Galaxy Tab).

And while the Galaxy Tab is not a _successful_ competitor, even with the advantage of copying the looks of the iPad, Samsung sells _some_ tablets which Apple would prefer to sell themselves.

On a tablet ... competing against an iPad? No chance!

Is chance. To have same interface on small phone and big tablet is temporary. Steve and Scott will change this before Steve dies. This is what he wants, a special tablet interface for future. Is obvious.

It had better be 2012, after getting an iPad 2 only couple of months ago I don't want to have to go and buy an iPad 3 so soon.

I think the point some are missing is ...

That the way the market is going, in the opinion of the analyst, Apple could wait well into 2012 to release and iPad 3, well past the typical March/April release we all seem to expect. Apple could keep milking the iPad 2 cash cow until next summer (or later) and still dominate the tablet market.

There is some precedence for this as the iPhone 5 has gone almost a whole quarter past the expected summer release date, its expected in probably a months time but since nothing is concrete who knows.

And honestly, who really believed apple would push and iPad 3 in 2011 anyway?

Sounds about right to have prototypes now for the launch next year. Early prototypes are essential. To have a feel for any changes, and to account for modifications. Of course we don't hear much about this till it's launch time, because a lot of things from the prototype may later be omitted changed, or added. Not to mention that its great to have a testing platform for multiple chips. I'm sure apple probably has had at least one iPad that ran OSX just for the sake of trying it out :p

According to a new research note from J.P. Morgan's Mark Moskowitz summarized by AppleInsider, Apple is unsurprisingly working on prototypes for the iPad 3, but should be in "no rush" to release the device as competitors have yet to put forward compelling alternative devices.

It's not that we should stop giving these people credit far stating the obvious, it is that we should realize that they have no ********** idea what they are talking about (and that they get paid lots of $$ to spew this crap).

Apple wil release the iPad 3 at one time and only at one time....When it's ready to be released- as in when the product is RIGHT. That will most likely be in April, even if there is no other tablet in their league. On Wall Street it's ALL about the money- At Apple, thank God it is still not and I pray that it will never be.
