This is actually a pretty big turning point for Apple's mobile division, not because of Force Touch, but because of RAM. We are already seeing a feature in iOS9 that will be exclusive to next generation devices with multitasking, and iOS10 will most likely see some UI elements exclusive to 2GB devices. Now that 2GB of RAM is needed for multitasking, I would be surprised if the 6s came with any less than 2GB.

The 6s will not necessarily be a huge upgrade over the 6 in the short term though. It is kind of a catch 22, but an upgrade from the 6 to the 6s would only be advantageous if you weren't planning on upgrading to the 7, as most of the benefits of the 6s will not be realized until late 2016.

Matt

I think Apple plans to sell the 6s for at least 2 or possibly 3 years so that extra gig of RAM will be critical to the marketability of this iPhone when it becomes Apple's 2nd tier phone in September 2016. I think the extra RAM is actually more beneficial in the long run for the 6s than the 64-bit A7 processor is for the 5s. If Apple releases a 6c this September and it also has 2GB of RAM, then we'll know Apple's intention to make sure all iPhones released in 2015 can take full advantage of iOS 9/10 and not be "unofficially left behind" like 1GB iOS devices.

Probably the first iPhone I'll skip (which of course I say every year). I think the 6 is great.

Force Touch on my AW doesn't really do too much for me. I never think to use it, either. Some sort of secret UI element based on a harder touch doesn't scream user friendly to me.

When they introduce Force Push from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game, then count me in.

Lmao what? ForceTouch is legit (albeit most people won't care), and the improved camera should be legit too. The rest of it are under the hood things you likely won't notice. That's all the phone has to offer. I'm sorely disappointed.

LMAO wat? The 2GB of RAM is the higgest new feature. The 6+ is already chugging with its limited RAM. This is Apple's biggest update since the iPhone 4.

Logically, Apple's core demographic for the iPhone 6s is people who use their iPhones to play small pianos.

There are a lot of EDM mixing apps on the store where you location and swipe does a lot of mixing effects. Force touch can add to the UX there quite well.

This is shaping up to be a monster update,

- A9
- Series 7000 Aluminum
- ForceTouch
- Improved camera
- Upgraded FaceTime camera
- 2 GB RAM

+ iOS 9

This is going to bring a world of hurt to Samsung and Andriod

+ iOS 9 with multi-tasking which requires that 2GB RAM.

Plus, the antenna bands may "disappear" based on a Apple patent, possibly no more protruding camera lens depending on the new camera and a darker shade of space gray like the space gray Apple Watch (crossing fingers). It may be too soon for USB Type-C, but you never know.

The 5c was a retooled 5 so the logical assumption would be that the "6c" would be a retooled 6, not 5s.

I'd love if you are right! At the moment though, this dubious bit of info might suggest it is a 5S.

It was also an unusual decision to totally replace the 5 with the 5C, which might have impacted sales of of a perfectly good year old device, when Apple made it plastic and bet big on emerging markets.

If it is indeed a 5S in plastic then Apple might actually make good on the assumed promise of a budget phone all those years ago when the 5C was teased.

If the 6 disappeared entirely in september, they're removing a price point that currently goes 6, 5S (last gen) 5C (last last gen)

Apple didn't bet big on emergin markets with the 5c, if I recall correctly Apple was selling the iPhone 5c in the USA right?

Yeah that's true. I would have thought that Apple were looking for a better sales ratio in the BRIC countries though? In China though, I see much more gold than polycarbonate. (I know none of us actually know sales and are guessing though)

Reduce the bezel!!! Why is a 4.7" phone as big as 5" or more phones?

This is why I got rid of my 6 and got the 6 plus. I felt like i was getting cheated because apple could have made the screen on the 6 bigger by putting the bezel on a diet especially that top and bottom bezel.

The Force Touch will not be a deal for me. I will not upgrade my 6 to an S6 unless the camera is pushed to the rumored 12 megapixel.

I never use it on my new MBP

Cue analyst reports as follows:

Production pushed back due to manufacturing difficulties.
Production delayed due to Force Touch panel bottlenecks.
Expect severe stock shortages at launch due to production issues.

Love, Ming-Chi Kuo.

Ming-Chi, man! That guy is craaazy, am I right?!

If the new iPhone looks exactly the same as the old one, how will be able to look superior to all my friends if I get one?

Tim in charge of Apple? I waited for the headlines....''Cook promises to improve Apple turnover''.

anyway, besides all your personal motivations of purchasing or upgrading to the 6s...

I think the early production is needed to top the sales of the iphone 6 last year. Last year sales were huge, a lot of people did an upgrade, to top that you have to have supply for a world release from day 1 I think. I don't think they are going to change the release date.

Looking to be an extremely strong S upgrade. I'm hoping that the A9 will follow :apple:s cycle of incremental processor upgrade (A4, A6, A8), major processor upgrade (A5, A7, A9). Should be good enough to put into the iPad Air 3 as well. That will provide the opportunity to put an A9X in the Pro.

Have you used it on a MacBook trackpad? It's surprisingly user friendly. :) I haven't tried it on the watch though.

The new camera could be interesting. But I'm more interested to see what Apple engineering has up its sleeve for their new A series ARM processor chip. Last year's A8 chip was as fast as the x86 on some 5 year older Macbooks. It will be interesting to see if Mansfield's team can close that gap so the iPhone is a lesser number of years behind the Mac in raw performance.

Before iOS 9 that was exactly what I hoped they wouldn't do but was worried that they would. I don't pkay demanding games so for me even my iPhone 5 is fast enough. I've been waiting for the generation when Apple designers would prioritise power reduction over increased performance. With the new power saving feature in iOS 9, or maybe a slightly more user customisable version of power saving, Apple can keep both of us happy. You get the big performance increases that you want but I can use iOS 9 power saving mode to dial back the performance so that I get something that maybe performs something like a 5s but with the latest A series chip needing to draw about half the power or maybe even less than that on the 5s in order to deliver that performance.

The only thing missing right now is that iOS power saving mode is a one size fits all deal so might still leave me with more performance than I actually need for my phone. I'd quite like it if at some point Apple put in some sort of performance slider or even just a high/medium/low settings for the performance throttling bit of power save mode. Basically it's all heading in the right direction though and I'm now going to be far less frustrated if/when I hear in the next launch of another 50% performance boost on a phone that already had twice the performance I personally needed.

Force touch, higher quality aluminium, and better camera.

Plus I'm coming from a 5C so I also get these 'new' features: Touch ID, much much faster processor, bigger, better, higher res, screen. Also, as I predicted, Apple Pay launches in the UK before my upgrade :)

...can't wait!
