Updated UPS Status

My 16 GB WiFi iPad ordered 1:34 PM EST 3/12/10 has updated UPS status:

Status: Exception
LOUISVILLE, KY, US 03/30/2010 11:29 A.M. UPS INTERNAL ACTIVITY
SHENZHEN, CN 03/29/2010 10:03 P.M. ORIGIN SCAN
CN 03/29/2010 10:32 P.M. BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

Getting really jealous now. Remember six months ago tracking my new macbook pro halfway around the world for three days with ups.
Can't believe how excited or sad that was, I'm nearly 49 years old.
Still if I had the spare change, I'd be waiting for an iPad now as well.
Enjoy all

Guangzhou

Mine went from Shenzhen to Guangzhou in 36 hours and apparently likes it there, because it's staying awhile. Guangzhou, Guangzhou...isn't that the town where all the food was sent that "starving kids in China" would be happy to have, back when I was unwilling to eat it? Now they're grown up and working for Customs, getting their revenge for all that crappy food by holding up my iPad. And some of yours, too.

I'll stir the pot a little, because so far, I've seen no one else in this thread that has been told THIS by UPS: I talked to one of their reps yesterday about "Saturday delivery or not", blah, blah, blah, and she said that because she's able to see more detail in her system than I can on the Web, she could tell me that my package shows "guaranteed to deliver by 4/2 at 10:30".

I am NOT trolling. She told me that. I didn't believe her for a second, but those were her words. I figure I'm getting the thing on 4/5, because 1) I don't think Apple will allow any deliveries or purchases prior to around 9:00 AM PST on 4/3 and 2) I know that UPS doesn't deliver on Saturdays where I live. That doesn't mean Apple hasn't worked something out with them specifically for this initial iPad shipment, I guess, but they were pretty careful to put on their pre-order site that those in areas without Saturday delivery can expect to take delivery on 4/5. These people on the phone will just tell you anything.

Louisville Exception

I've got the same "Exception" in Louisville, apparently someone is taking a baseball bat to mine:

LOUISVILLE, KY, US 03/30/2010 1:27 P.M. SHIPMENT IS HELD TO VERIFY COMMODITY DESCRIPTION WITH THE CUSTOMER FOR CORRECT CLASSIFICATION

In all seriousness, this is probably a necessary hold to ensure that the Ipads are delivered on Saturday and not earlier.

strange because the rep I spoke to said saturday delivery specified or not, Apple and UPS worked out a deal to deliver to EVERYONE regardless of this policy...we will see..

At the time of the pre-order launch, Apple stated on its website that deliveries would be on 4/3 in cities offering Saturday delivery and 4/5 in locations with no Saturday delivery. Unless something changed, that's what I would continue to expect.

I was just told by a UPS rep that my shipment is scheduled for delivery on Thursday April 1st--by the end of business.

Strictly out of curiousity (I'm not worried whether I get it Saturday or Monday), I called UPS and was given an interesting bit of information, although I not have no idea what to believe.

The rep I spoke to deals with international shipments. He retrieved the "customs paperwork" on his computer that says the delivery is scheduled for "Thursday April 1st by the end of business." I asked if Saturday delivery was even an option in my location, just for the heck of it, and he said that the ". . . shipping information indicates that Saturday delivery is not even an option. As long as there are no Customs issues, the package is in the computer as a Thursday April 1st delivery by the end of business."

I have no idea what to make of this now.

Well my shipping info says that it's going to Kansas City, KS, US. Which is the location of the central shipping center for UPS here, while I live in Kansas City, MO. So I suspect that the iPad's will sent to the local shipping center and distributed on Saturday, but I'm just guessing at this point.

I just talked to international shipping department at UPS because I had this exception

THE SERVICE SELECTED IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE DESTINATION ADDRESS / DOWNGRADED, FORWARDED TO CONSIGNEE, SELECTED SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE

He said they changed from one shipping type to another that would get it here faster or something like that, then i told him that Apple said they will not deliver until Saturday and asked if I have Saturday service in my area...He said he shows it to be delivering tomorrow and has no information from Apple on file saying to hold the package and to expect it tomorrow...What the heck is going on inside UPS, no one in there seems to have any clue what is happening.

That's the exception a lot of us had. It sounds like you got the same story from UPS that I got. The rep I spoke with said there were no instructions or indications that the package would be held until Saturday and that it's scheduled to be delivered as soon as possible, which is Thursday for me. He did make sure to be very clear that customs could delay it though.

I'll believe the delivery stuff when I see it happen.

I guess I'll check the tracking in the morning, and if it says out for delivery, I'll be calling in sick that day.

They know, trust me. The only thing Big Brown has no control over is when Doofus On The Truck drives the signature-only package to the other side of town and leaves it on Joe Jerkwad's front step, then takes off, leaving me to prove I never got the package and to stay on the phone with them day after day to get the problem solved, maybe. I hate UPS. I never willingly choose them, and if I had known that Apple would do so this time, I'd have gone to the store to pick up my iPad. It's only 50 miles away, after all. Oh well, next time. With this device, I'm not as Valium-popping anxious as I was with the 3GS and the MBP. Not quite. As long as they bring it to the right house, and actually make their presence known, and don't park it in the rain and leave, I'll be happy. Did I mention that I hate UPS? Can't say I'm overly impressed with FedEx, either, but at least they "deliver" on Saturday here. Then I could just sling the big, padded net across the entire driveway and front of the house and wait, hoping the package lands in it as the pilot flies by. Dammit, I knew I should've done in-store pickup. Now one of my "fingernails" is bleeding again. I hope at least my eye will quit twitching.

I went through the same scenario with the iPhone 3GS. Even though they will be at UPS' distribution centers, no one is going to get one early. I was in on the pre-order of the 3GS and constantly checking UPS tracking etc... There wasn't a soul who got one early, and there won't be now either. So regardless of what any UPS employee tells you, they will all be held and not delivered early.

I have a fairly large account with UPS with a dedicated rep team and they told me the same thing initially, that there was no hold, and then, bam! So although it would be cool to get it early, it ain't gonna happen.

Just to clarify things a bit. These early delivery dates that some are being given is just based on the normal transit time from China to wherever you are. Once they get to the distribution centers, you will see the tracking information change to show a hold and a rescheduled delivery. Same thing happened with the 3GS.

I agree with you more than I believe what the rep told me. It's just crazy that they are so clueless about it. I wasn't even trying to find out when it was going to be delivered. All I wanted to know is whether UPS delivers to my house on Saturday. The guy kept insisting that Saturday delivery is out of the question and that it would be there Thursday. So I asked him if can I have Saturday delivery on future packages, regardless of this current shipment, and he said I could.

Based on your edit, that seems to make the most sense. Thanks.

Yeah I couldnt get Saturday info out of UPS either, Picking a Saturday was not a very good idea for a release... I have a feeling a lot of people will be waiting until Monday and scrounging to find someone to stay at their house and wait all damn day for the thing to arrive at 445pm

Ipad Arriving Thursday!

I just called UPS, they said my ipad was arriving on Thursday before 10:30 AM if it passes customs!!!!! I hope they are not lying to me!

Here's the latest tracking that I just got:

LOUISVILLE, KY, US 03/30/2010 4:27 P.M.

BROKERAGE RELEASED SHIPMENT. SHIPMENT IS SUBMITTED TO CLEARING AGENCY FOR FURTHER CLEARANCE

Status is 'exception'

UPS tends to screw things up all the time with deliveries to my household...maybe this time they'll screw-up in a good way for a change and deliver it early , but I doubt it.

They are, only because the customer service people don't know any different. You should see an exception tomorrow that says something like this:

LOUISVILLE, KY, US 06/17/2009 4:00 A.M. THE PACKAGE IS BEING HELD FOR FUTURE DELIVERY. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON THE DATE REQUESTED
