I was showing an exception for Kentucky before that information disappeared and went back to showing only the origin scan in China. However, at the moment, I'm showing a new exception at my local UPS hub for "UPS Internal Activity." I got curious and did a brief search for the exception code and found a couple hits. A few people who got this exception called UPS and were told by UPS that the vendor had requested that the shipment information be masked. As secretive as Apple is, I wouldn't put it past them to do this. However, I'd really like to think that

ROCKHILL, SC, US 03/31/2010 9:00 A.M. UPS INTERNAL ACTIVITY

means my iPad is 20 minutes away :p

Man this is screwy......yesterday it said it was in Louisville then that disappeared and it only listed China then last night it listed Windsor Locks my local hub (15 min away) and now that has disappeared too :(

Lots of TUAW readers have written in today, worried about their iPad deliveries. Since they received shipment notices, many folks have been tracking their progress, and are now seeing messages like:

UPS INTERNAL ACTIVITY.
SHIPMENT IS HELD TO VERIFY COMMODITY DESCRIPTION WITH THE CUSTOMER FOR CORRECT CLASSIFICATION
"Your package has experienced an exception"
If you received one of these notices, you are not alone. Apple has taken similar measures in the past to make sure that deliveries do not arrive before the official release date. In fact, Boy Genius Reportsuggests that Apple is purposefully withholding clearance papers for the iPads to make sure that they are not delivered early.

As anxious as these next few days of waiting will be, and as nerve-racking as it is when this is your iPad, I fully expect that 99.99% of the iPads scheduled for delivery on Saturday will be delivered on Saturday.

We've also heard directly from someone who works "for a certain shipping company" who reports that they will have double the number of drivers out in their particular delivery area on Saturday, due to the increased traffic. I would expect that other areas would see similar increases. Nobody who works for a shipping company wants to have to go back to Apple and explain why they couldn't meet delivery needs.

That being said, the same source does not expect exceptions to be made for areas without Saturday delivery, so you may have to wait until Monday for your iPad to be delivered. Don't panic -- we're sure UPS will do everything it can to get your iPad to you on time. If you're not sure about the delivery policy in your area, you may want to contact UPS to verify.

The only tracking info that really shows you the location of your package will use the words "origin scan", "departure scan", or "arrival scan". The lines listing "internal activity" are not location scans of the package itself, but show paperwork taking place somewhere else.

You would think that since Apple's website said Delivers on 4/3, even after entering my shipping info, that it will appear on Saturday no matter what. I'm imagining at least one person at each UPS hub should be dedicated to Saturday delivery, right?

I shipped it to my house since no one will be at the office to receive a package. However, if it will arrive on Monday, I should have shipped it to work. :(

Gizmodo story:

Did Apple Sucker Us With iPad Rush Shipping?

If you ordered your iPad by March 27th with expedited shipping, you should receive your iPad by April 3rd. If you ordered your iPad by March 27th with normal shipping, you should receive your iPad by April 3rd. Wait, what??

...

It's great news that basically everyone who pre-ordered early gets their iPad on launch day, but I know there are many of us out there wondering, did Apple really need to take our extra $12? Which also leads us to wonder, could we please have our collective $12 back?

I called Apple this evening and asked for a refund on my $12 and they did. Give it a try, it should work for you.

Saturday is a great in store relase date, but crappy for shipments to home. The funny thing is all other orders I have placed with Apple have been shipped to me via FedEx, which does deliver on Saturdays. UPS, where I live, won't deliver until Monday. The UPS customer center 40 miles away is closed on Saturdays as well. Guess they really wanted people to line up at Apple Stores so it looked like better hype for the media. Hey, maybe I can get the local news to come film me camped out on my front porch waiting for my iPad :D

For those that are tracking, does UPS list a weight for the package?

I'm just curious as I'm using a Mail forwarding service to have a 16GB WiFi sent to Canada, and I want to have a rough idea for shipping costs.

Thanks!

The Great iPad Expedited Shipping Surprise
Written by: Matt Hartley on 3/31/10 | Filed Under Apple | Share ShareThis

Think you’re getting that pre-ordered iPad on time. Well, think again. According to Gizmodo, some of you may be out the $12 expidited shipping despite being led to believe that it would have gotten the coveted iPad to your hot little hands a few days sooner.

This is simply one of those cases where opting for normal shipping would yield the exact same result as ordering your iPad with expedited shipping. Worse, Apple has reportedly not even bothered to answer an inquiry on this shipping matter, likely due to the fact that it is UPS doing the shipping. The good news is that both regular shipping and expedited shipping users will be enjoying their new purchases here fairly soon.

As iPad ships, Apple ups productionMarch 29, 2010by Dave Parrack
The iPad is now shipping, and as the process begins, Apple is said to be upping production levels and estimates for how many of the tablet devices it expects to sell by the end of the year. Best Buy is also confirmed to be carrying the iPad from this Saturday.

The time for talking, at least on the part of Apple and its CEO Steve Jobs, is over. Now the test really begins, as the iPad starts shipping to those people who pre-ordered as soon as the Apple tablet went on presale.

According to Engadget, those very early adopters who placed their iPad orders in the first two days of the presale are now receiving shipping notices from Apple. While this doesn’t mean they’re going to receive their iPads early – they’re still expected to arrive on people’s doorsteps on this coming Saturday (April 3), it does signal the next stage of the iPad soap opera.

Hot on the heels of this news comes a client report from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty.

She claims Apple’s suppliers are now upping production to cope with the better-than-expected demand for the tablet device. Overall, estimates for how many iPads will be sold by the end of 2010 have risen to between 8 million and 10 million units. Huberty herself thinks it will be closer to 6 million, while many analysts still insist Apple will be lucky to shift 4 million iPads.

What will do Apple no harm whatsoever is the fact that the iPad is now confirmed to be going on sale at best Buy stores around the U.S. from April 3. There were rumors concerning this over the weekend after an internal Best Buy memo was leaked, but TechCrunch has now confirmed the news.

The 675 Best Buy stores with “Apple Solutions Consultants (ASC) and Apple Shops” will each have a total of 15 Wi-Fi-only iPads in stock from 9am this Saturday. Meaning those who missed out on the presale and think they’ve lost their chance to grab a launch day iPad need to start camping outside their local Best Buy on Friday night.

Not sure why anyone would rush the shipment on the iPad, that was always going to be delivered ON April 3rd.

I chose rush for the other accessories.

What have the people who called Apple hearing?

Seems some people are hearing, it will be delivered Saturday no matter what UPS says (I can envision a truck driving from a nearby city that does have Saturday delivery)

Some are hearing they will receive it on Monday.

I am AT HOME on Saturday. I am AT WORK on Monday. I shipped to my home specifically because it was to arrive on Saturday.

EDIT:
I am hearing the exact opposite from a UPS rep. She even asked me if the package was coming from Apple. Her understanding is that all Apple packages will be delivered Saturday. (She seemed to think very rural areas might not get theirs)

Surprising but that's what she said. Mine should be at my house by noon.

hearing from both sides that no matter if your area has saturday delivery or not, that you will receive based on special arrangements Apple has set up with UPS...I was told not to worry

You would think Apple or UPS would release a statement clarifying this. It is a really easy answer for one of them.

They are thinking "we said it would deliver on 4/3 and it will, so what more do you want from us?" I agree with you though.

Ipad Not Shipping Until Late April!

I placed an order for a 16GB WIFI-only iPad on March 19th, well before the deadline. I noticed that my iPad status has not changed from Not Yet Shipped so I gave Apple a call.

Apparently, the 19th was too late and my iPad won't be shipping until late April. This is what a senior customer service agent told me. I'm shocked to say the least.

Enjoy your iPads everyone.

I think if you provided a screenshot of your Apple order proving that you ordered on the 19th and it says shipping late April (and it is a Wi-Fi unit) it would be easier to believe -- otherwise, it doesn't ring true. As you can see below, I ordered my iPad on the 25th.

I did call Apple. A senior support person told me that iPad availability is on a first come first serve basis. I'm going to call back... something is definitely wrong here.

I can't duplicate your screen -- nothing I have has a "Sales Ref Number". All mine either have information with payment and shipping address information, and the prices I paid, or no shipping information and no prices -- your's has mixture of both.

Are you sure you completed the transaction? Where is the screen that says what you paid? And how did you pull up an order without logging in?

Hey this is my first time commenting on this forum but that does sounds a little strange. I placed my order on the 21st around 10:30am and my status changed to "Prepared for Shipping" on Monday the 29th and then changed to "Shipping" just yesterday. I sure hope you manage to get it on the 3rd somehow, Good Luck!
