i saw the nexus 7 at best buy almost a year ago and one look was enough to make me not want to buy it

what do the android tablets have the ipad doesn't?

Yummy sounding code names. Android is a swell phone OS but lacking for tablets. But I'm sure Gummy Bear will fix it.

But that's my point, they don't want to own it and they do want to hide it because they need to preserve margins. If they talk about it then they do own it and 1GB on an iPad is hard to intellectually justify year after year. It's like when restaurants used "pink slime" in their beef. They didn't advertise that either, hoping to slide it under the radar as long as possible because it allowed for healthy margins.

Well I think that's crap. Fine don't advertise it but if a consumer asks an Apple store or customer service employee they should be able to answer. We shouldn't need a 3rd party tear down for this.

A $150 lower price point for comparable models is a good one. Otherwise they're basically the same, except a few minor things (Touch ID). I honestly don't have a reason to buy an iPad at this point. Love my Mac and my iPhone, but in the tablet realm, I think the Nexus 7 (and now the Nexus 9) are pretty good choices.

Unless you want 64GB or 128GB storage.

EDIT: I did upvote you because I agree that the $100 difference doesn't make sense for the 16GB model.

Given the minimal change from 2 to 3, I'd be inclined to buy a refurbished 2 from Apple....you can get a 64GB 2 for less than a 16GB 3.

Refurbished Mini 2 prices:
16GB = $249
32GB = $299
64GB = $349
128GB= $439

Agreed.

You don't SHOUT about negatives publicly that you know are wildly regarded as negatives by the "tech" people.
However you should be open when asked directly.
Ideally you have a smart ass answer prepared as any one selling should be aware of well known issues and have scripted honest replies to all the common questions. :)

I was actually considering getting an iPad Air 2 (would be my first iPad), but after watching the Keynote yesterday I am disappointed in the updates Apple have made this time around.

What did you expect as an improvement in the first place? The iPad Air have been decently upgraded, on the other hand, what they did to the mini is pretty outrageous.

Btw, am I the only one whom the name iPad "Air" very much annoys? If I hear the name Air, I naturally think of the MacBook Air. It does make more sense with the MacBooks anyway, because there is a thicker, heavier model (the MBP), hence the differentiation. But what's the point of the name iPad Air in the long term, when they don't even sell any thicker, heavier iPad anymore? They just ruined a robust, straightforward brand name (iPad). Even these generation numbers look lame. Air 2, mini 3, jeez, what's next? iPad Air X202E? It's not nice and simple anymore. If they come up with an iPad mini 4 next year, I will be rolling on the floor. I don't understand how Apple (who were always so proud of being elegant and minimalistic) can even do this. If there is something Steve really wouldn't have allowed to happen, it is this.

Have too agree with the vast concensus of the MR population-the iPad Mini 3 really got the short-end of the stick.

This is not an upgrade!

Just adding Touch ID and leaving everything else the same! Ugh!

I have to believe that the iPad Mini 3 we got was "Plan B".
I think there must have been a more ambitious update in the works as well but something didn't work out so Apple went with this.

It's not like the mini 3 isn't still a great little tablet. But with such a small update I think they should have knocked the price down. (And made 32 GB the entry-level model, but we knew they weren't going to do that.)

The more I think about this, I'm guessing the A8 is destined for the mini (X variant might be too power hungry) but right now Apple has all it can handle with the phones so the current mini 3 is just a placeholder and will get A8 next year, perhaps next spring. There's no point in selling a mini 3 if Apple is planning on killing off the mini.

Sadly, as an Apple fan, and collector, I am underwhelmed with both newest models, especially considering their prices. I was waiting out to see if the new models had any new physical features (knowing it was unlikely), but sadly they actually deleted one, the mute/rotation lock switch, which he makes little sense to me (how many pennies per unit are they saving)

Just need to decide now if it is worth it for me to save ~$300 to abandon iOS and go with an Android tablet that has some of the hardware features I am after. The downside is, it will also require me to purchase Android versions of the photo / video tools I use for editing and posting content, and find ways to share data between my iPhone and tablet when traveling without a laptop. I know of a few options for this, however iCloud has been my tool for most of these situations.

Using my old iPad with iOS 8.1 will be the deciding factor. Continuity may keep the newest iPad Air in the running for me.

Actually software is what keeps me with iOS for tablets. I couldn't imagine losing the OMNI group software or Filemaker Go, not to mention Adobe's ever growing suite of touch apps.

Android tablets wear quickly too. I gave a Sony tablet to my dad, The Sony was dead in under a year.

I abandoned iPhone after the 3G. The product that HTC has been putting out is on par with Apple hardware and Google's software is much more convenient compared with iOS on smaller devices.

It's a brutal "upgrade" to the mini. I have the mini 2, got it 3 months ago and I don't have the usual "gotta have it" thing going. The Air 2 looks amazing though.

Yeah. I was into the idea of a Mini.. but not now. Not a new one, at least. Maybe if I can find a good price on a Mini 2. The 3? Psh. $100 for TouchID only? No thanks.

You can think what you like, it's just how it is. That is their game plan. If a consumer is overly upset by the omission of that info then they don't have to buy it. That's Apple's risk. Obviously they don't feel its a huge one.

Apple isn't alone in not advertising specs that are not to its advantage of doing so. For example, go ask a BMW dealer or BMW itself how many watts are in it's upgrade H/K stereo. You'll get a lot of mumbo jumbo but no hard number.

I'm very disappointed with the new mac mini 3. The ipad Air looks quite nice but after owning an ipad 2 for 3 years I find the form factor too big. I want a smaller ipad!

I think there are two plausible reasons for not updating the ipad mini 3
1. they fear cannibalization with the iphone 6 plus. remember that with continuity an ipad mini 3 has the same functionality as an iphone 6 plus but for a cheaper price
2. the A8 is in very high demand with the iphone 6 and iphone 6 plus. because the margin is higher on the iphone, putting an A8 in an ipad is considered a loss until supply is sufficient.

The last reason is of course very plausible given Tim's background.
