Oh man, that was stressful for me. I had to pickup since I won't be home to sign and I had a 9am window to pickup but my card was "declining" every time. I kept watching the window of time slip. Finally for the 12pm slot it let me select it and my cc was approved. I think it would have been easy to have delivered if I could have.

Where I am at least (Ontario, Canada) it seems like most models are still available for launch day delivery as of now (about 15 minutes after going live).
Those aren’t accurate times as far as I can tell. What shows 9/19 delivery in the store actually changes to 9/25 delivery in the bag, but who knows what’s true. I placed my preorder at 5:03 and still got 9/25 so hopefully that’s not accurate.

Looks like the orange pro max is the most popular or least on hand as those shipping times are slipping the first and less stores for pickup. All the smaller pros are still in stock for day 1 delivery.

To stop the bots from preordering phones. And also to build excitement.

Shutting the site down also limits the possibility of a DOS.
Ummm...no?
Whatever the full store is on or you have the simple page with some timer and few words you still have to handle any incoming requests.
While a simple page uses obviously less resources if DDoS is on big enough scale the webpage size and processing requirements of it are a second rate problem.
And how exactly shutting down the store does limits the possibility of DDoS? "Darn, they changed the page into the simple page for some time, guess we need to cancel DDoS once the flood gates our open. :("

Can you explain? I'm trying to order on the AT&T site and it still tell me it can't ship. Did you call?
No, I went to the site, selected my current phone to upgrade and got everything ready yesterday. They saved my cart, and this morning I logged in to see if I could do the order since I was on way to airport for a long weekend. I just hit submit order, and it went through.

this year's sales are very bad it seems
If everything sells out immediately: “they didn’t have enough stock!”

If everything doesn’t sell out immediately: “bad sales this year!”

There’s no way of knowing since we don’t know how much stock was available. They could have record sales and still not sell out quickly if they had enough stock.

yeah I forgot to append that, but indeed if they had prepared with more stocks, it could even mean the opposite

I went to the Apple Store app (UK) because I’ve been considering a refurbished phone over the last couple of days. Why does the whole store need to be down? I’m not interested in any of their new stuff right now. Let me look at the other products.
It's all about anticipation.

Pre-order, then you've got another week to make your mind up whilst still keeping your options open.
Nah, if I order it (pre-order or not), then it's all done.

I cannot see myself going back on it at that point.

So, right now - roughly 2 and half hours since pre-orders opened, I'm still mulling on it, sure in the knowledge that the longer I can postpone the decision, the more I'm able to resist the temptation... ;)

Yah. In Canada it looks like 16 pro max orange 1TB is pushed to lat October. But 2TB is mid October.

The Air seems to be Sept 19th still.

Weird. I got Sept 19th. I did order fast though. In Canada.

Now the orange pro max is way into Oct

Have you had any experience ordering GPU's or other products where the site is live?

There are many people hosting bots on sites in order to scalp devices. It is a potential risk and shutting down access to the site limits people from doing this and allows everyone to have an equal footing when pre-ordering.

I am not saying that is the exact reason but it is a potential reasoning behind server stability and preventing server load with everyone refreshing the site pages throughout the day.

I am also not stating that  will not be doing this to build hype.

I managed to order and got a delivery or collection date of the 19th. I work in education, so I selected Apple Store collection on the 20th. My colleague ordered his 5 mins after me, his is coming the 24th.

I’ve plumped for the Orange PM, 256GB.

I was in on my iPhone via the Apple Store app and let Safari on my Mac and the Apple Store app on my iPad wait on this screen. At one point, they both simultaneously did exactly what the page said and 'brought me in for pre-order.' So that leads me to believe that the days of constantly reloading browsers or quitting and reopening the Store app may be over.
