Does anyone else notice that when you click "Store" and get the "We'll be right back" that "iPod" returns along the top bar!? :D

I'm wondering if it is still necessary for Apple to take the store actually down (it's 2015!).
I don't know any other store where this is done.

Normally you work with staging and pre-staging systems to activate changes with a single mouse click.

Is it only a marketing gimmick?

Sure is! Just watch our faces when they've had the store down for 4 hours just to update some Beats headphones and nothing else.

yes just as most of the leaks you hear about are not by accident its all for the hype as you can see it works great. Sometimes i wonder if there is a big red phone at apple connected to mac rumors office LOL

If the Shuffle and Nano only get a new blue color and NO price or capacity bump, I will be utterly disgusted with Apple. :(

Not necessarily. Apple's web traffic is huge. They may have a large backend caching mechanism, all kinds of systems we don't even know about, plus the deployment process is always business specific.

I don't think they do it just for the hype. I don't think Apple would care that much about its followers to do something like this just for they hype. It's more likely that there is more going on technically than we know about.

BUT (and it's a big but) When a new product is launched like the Watch, they manage to keep the old website running fine all the way up to the announcement, and it switches seamlessly to the new site with new landing page, layout, subsections for new product etc. No need for it to be "taken down for 5 hours" prior to the event. It's marketing pure & simple.

But it'll be thinner and lighter, with soldered buttons so you can't skip songs! That's what people want from an MP3 player, not capacity to store songs :p

It is only for the hype (and I'm fine with it, I am also getting excited every single time - would be a nice touch if they still would use the post-it note) .... all you mentioned above can be done without taking the server down for hours, this is no longer the eighties !

the hype is a welcomed byproduct (and probably turned into a kind of 'preference' for them after noticing said hype), but there's really no comparison between amazon's site and apple's. apple DOES do what amazon does with accessories, refurb store, and plenty of other 'modular' changes, but a whole section change means plenty of cross-checked Q&A because of their vastly more narrative MO.

all those buttons to lead you from one topic to another if you're interested in exploring? big impact site-wide...

"We'll be back."

Prepare to be disappointed … yet again.

The iPod refresh will not be as good as it could/should be.

Astell&Kern, FiiO, HiFiMan and even Sony all make better portable players. Tim Cook has no interest in making the best products.

Is this the last hurrah for iPods? Rumors don't indicate a bigger screen for the Touch so my guess is this is the last iPod update we'll see.

It may be the last touch update, but I think they'll keep either the Nano or Shuffle (maybe a hybrid) around. There is still a market for a small MP3 player for outside, gym use, etc.

It wouldn't' take much to maintain a product line like that once established and I think they would make some money.

"Soldered buttons?" I laughed at that.

"The innovative new soldered buttons no longer click, press, or break. It's a beautiful detail that helps increase the structural rigidity of the device."

I hope Apple's graphics department had a good laugh over the Tuesday 14th speculation. Just give us a new touch!
Maybe the July 14th date was a reminder for Tim Cook to decide whether to pull the trigger on an iPod refresh or discontinue everything all together. Hopefully when the store goes back up it really is new iPods and not say new Apple Watch colours.

They sell in such small numbers now it's not worth the effort.

How much effort would it be to include 32GB of flash instead of 16GB in the current Nano. The Nano is 3 years old, I bet they could even use the same size chip by now. :(

You could be right although from a purely logistical point of view it would make more sense to switch to the same 4" screen being used in the iPhone 5c. That would help keep production costs down by maximising economies of scale. My guess is if they don't then yes I agree this will be the last update before they kill it off in a couple of years.

Lol remember when the iPod was their main money maker?

of course - before the iPod they were just computer manufacturers who dabbled in somewhat lukewarm off-shoots that failed to make them into the apple we know today. the iPod was their comeuppance.

Well finally and plus i get a discount at the PX thank god for letting me be an Army brat. not just because of the discounted prices but because of the various places i get to go to

Apple really doesn't understand how the internet works.

Why do they have to "go down" in order to update with new products?
You don't understand how Apple works. It's not that they *have* to "go down", it's the atmosphere that it creates.
