Nah, it's a marketing gimmick. there is absolutely no need for a two hour downtime to update ANY site.

Facebook updates itself without zero downtime. Even Apple's long downtime is only for new product launch, not when the rest of the site is updated.

They're just building up anticipation
heh, yeah.. and it's entirely effective.. even people in this thread who have no care for this updated product and are only here to complain about 'why does the site need to go down.. it's 2015.. etc."
..are swept up in the hype apple creates by taking the site down for product launches :)

Excitement over a product line that Apple doesn't give two hoots about? A product line that hasn't been updated in years? You guys really need to get a life.

ha.. see what i mean ;)

You seem to have forgotten that you're on a tech enthusiast website. There are people on here that genuinely love their iPod(s) and this is a form of hype for them. It has nothing to do with getting a life.

Funny that they forgot to update the top menu on their "we'll be back" page.
Still shows the old "ipod" and "itunes" menu items and leaves out the "music"

iPod Tocuh with A20 super-chip and 36mp camera!!

... yeah, but it is more realistic than some of the others that are posting their hopes and dreams.

I, too, hope they lower prices on the older iPod designs, the smaller designs, but I thought that for almost a decade and they never do. The nano should be $99, the shuffle $29.

My life was already splendid before the iPod came, and a new (hopely right updated) iPod will help to erode that 1% I miss to claim my (above mentioned) life as perfect

while it is part of the cult and the expectations ... but why haven't they updated to some system where they don't have to take the store down for half a day just to update a few products on there .... just imagine Amazon would do that every time they add something new or remove something. It is time to move to the next century.

But good that they update the touch - may parents/kids will be happy about it.

you can't build hype by updating within a few seconds, you have to take everything down for hours while the insane fanatics swoon over what is to be.

It is only for the hype (and I'm fine with it, I am also getting excited every single time - would be a nice touch if they still would use the post-it note) .... all you mentioned above can be done without taking the server down for hours, this is no longer the eighties !

If the site only went down for a few minutes, very few people would notice, and then no hype.

I kind of wish Apple would just release an "iPod" with no moniker like "nano" or "touch". It could be like the successor to the classic but have touch, high quantity flash storage, wifi, Apple Pay and Apple Music funtctionality. Ever since the nano got a bigger "touch"screen, it seems kind of redundant having an iPod "touch" as well

So you're asking for an updated iPod touch?

Apple really doesn't understand how the internet works.

Why do they have to "go down" in order to update with new products?

I'm sure they know the net better than you.

They do, as many have already said, for the atmosphere it makes and the hype.

They'll continue to do this, get used to it.
