Not necessarily. Apple's web traffic is huge. They may have a large backend caching mechanism, all kinds of systems we don't even know about, plus the deployment process is always business specific.

I don't think they do it just for the hype. I don't think Apple would care that much about its followers to do something like this just for they hype. It's more likely that there is more going on technically than we know about.

That would make sense if new products weren't added to Amazon live all the time (Even front page items like new Kindle's appear instantly), and store.apple.com gets a much smaller amount of traffic relative to Amazon.

Changing anything internal would require retooling, changing supplier contracts, new QC checks, and would likely increase component cost. Even if it's 5¢ a unit it's not worth the change on such a small seller. Changing the colour requires little if any changes in production costs.

You're missing a pretty big cost: managing and warehousing the extra SKUs.

You're not saying it, but do external changes not add to production costs? What about the QC to make sure that every colour coating is exactly the same as the proof?

"To ... create the new iPod Shuffle, we completely rethought its design, unapologetically returning to the roots and core essence of what it should be. By soldering the buttons, the user has literally no control over what song is playing, making this the most ... authentic Shuffle we've ever released. The previous unsatisfying click when pressing a button is now replaced with no noise at all - also making this the most silent Shuffle that we've ever designed."

Brilliant! I had the exact voice, intonation and pauses in my head whilst reading it. Well played, you win the internet for today.

Amazon is basically just the U.S. and doesn't operate internationally like Apple. Synchronizing over 100 online Apple stores with different languages and currencies is one reason. The other reason is probably the media. When the Apple Store goes down it becomes a story and builds anticipation.

What a load of rubbish.
Another case of insular, U.S.-centric thinking!
Amazon operate all over Earth.

they mostly do it so that, people dont buy a product and then 10 seconds later seeing the same product but with double capacity for the same price

Starting with 16 GB because screw you, use iCloud.

Starting with 16GB because 170 hours of continuous music is enough for many people.

The screw you is the amount they charge for the larger memory players and lack of a SD slot.

This is gold, absolutely pure gold.

I'm wondering if it is still necessary for Apple to take the store actually down (it's 2015!).
I don't know any other store where this is done.

Normally you work with staging and pre-staging systems to activate changes with a single mouse click.

Is it only a marketing gimmick?

Absolutely, and it works! Or at the very least it drives fans of all things Apple to the buzz centers... I was reading a review of some Apple gear elsewhere this morning and decided to flip into the refurb store to see if it was available there and to price it out. When I saw the store was down I showed up here to enjoy the party on my coffee break! :)

Really pissed that apparently the iPod nano 6 is not part of the upgrade. That was a GREAT iPod, so much better than the shuffle with no screen.

How do you know it won't be? The pictures in iTunes only show new colors on the exterior. We have no idea what improvements they'll bring on the inside. Even if it's just a price drop...it's something.

Of course it is. It's part of the Apple hype. Apple is the only one that does this and they know it. It works
, doesn't it? Now there is hype and a whole discussion over new iPods just by taking the store down. Without the hype of store going down, you probably wouldn't notice silent updates like new iPods for weeks. It's kind of like an informal announcement.

that's not entirely true.
for instance, getting a truck of blue concrete costs a lot more than red.. the blue dye is more expensive.
all colors don't cost the same

(but then again, i'm just being argumentative for the sake of arguing.. i don't really have much of a point nor care in the matter ;) )

No, they really do understand how the internet works, they take their store down which creates excitement, so people talk about it like we are now - They have it down to a T.

Excitement over a product line that Apple doesn't give two hoots about? A product line that hasn't been updated in years? You guys really need to get a life.
