TBH when you buy a retina machine you get a MagSafe 2 with it, if you want more or a new MagSafe just buy one?

I wouldn't use an old one on a retina machine given the price of the machine, what if something were to go wrong?

Same goes for iPhone chargers - who would buy £1 chargers for a £600 phone?

I'm confused as to what this does.

I have two old Macbooks
The last white pre unibody white Macbook
MBP 4,1

My wife has a new-ish work MBP and it takes a different power adapter.

From the thread "MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter".

You convert your old MagSafe adapter so that is can be used on newer computers with magsafe 2

I think anyone who needed this would have bought it by now. I bought two for both of my old power adapters, and use them happily with my rMBP in several locations. They pretty much stay permanently on the adapter's plug. Apple was smart and made the magnet stronger on the adapter side so it always stays on the cable.

I wouldn't be surprised if whatever stock is left lasts a very long time.

I'm not so sure about that. When I upgrade my cMBP this/next year, I was rather looking forward to only having to spend £18 on two adapters rather than £150ish on two new MagSafe power supplies.

Wow!!!

I can understand not wanting to use a third party power adapter or cable, but to not use a used OEM adapter that is in good condition is a a bit silly IMO.

If an OEM charger does fail they tend to just not work, I have had 2 fail and older one and a brand new one. In both cased I have had no damage.

For iPhone and iPad chargers I have never had an OEM charger fail.

A lot of Mac related rumble in the store for 'just' a watch event. I'm looking forward to new MacBooks more than anything else this year.

uh wahhh? this was for older style magsafe adapters to be used with the newer slimline macbook airs and retinas. an 85w adapter is an 85w adapter whether it has a magsafe 1 or 2 port on the end of it means nothing....thats like saying dont use the built in charger of the thunderbolt display to charge your macbook.

it was a convenience piece for switchers who had multiple magsafe adapters for magsafe 1 machines, im sure if you call in you can get more.

but something new is in the air, afterall spring is coming

If it is actually discontinued it will probably only be a month before we have a Chinese knockoff for $1.50

I am actually very surprised we don't have one available already.

Very strange. Maybe it's a mistake. Maybe they've come up with a different type of adaptor that's coming out soon.

Maybe that's what next week's event is all about! New MagSafe adaptors!!!!!

Gary

Not so far fetched, if the rMBA debuts and uses USB-C to charge instead...

hmmm....

I'm wondering if this means they won't be including it with the Thunderbolt display as well? They still have it listed as included.

I have a new Macbook Pro 15" and I've thought about getting one of the Thunderbolt 27" displays. They are very expensive, but do come with what amounts to docking ports, including a magsafe power port. I would need one of these converters to use it on my magsafe 2 equipped Macbook. I would like to think that this means that a new display is coming that will include magsafe 2. I don't think my Macbook Pro could drive a retina 27", like on the new iMac, but something with the same resolution as the current display, but with a better screen (the current one is too glossy) would be nice.

Thunderbolt displays come with the adapter packaged in with the instructions booklet

Some people shuttle between locations and these things are so easy to lose.

Apple will lose some goodwill, too, from me included. These adapters were overpriced and at our office some of them require a lot of jiggling to actually work.

By discontinuing them, Apple will basically force you to buy a power adapter if you work between two older monitors, but don't want to constantly unplug and plug the power adapter that came with your laptop.

It's one way that Apple stays so profitable, I guess....

It will return in some form. Could be something as simple as a supplier change.

There are plenty of people with current generation Thunderbolt Displays (And previous generation MiniDisplayPort displays) who will be updating their laptops and not their monitors. No way Apple will not sell some sort of Magsafe to Magsafe 2 adapter.

I mean the Apple Store still sells rechargeable swappable batteries for the 17in MacBook Pro from 2010.

Clearly the "Spring Forward" event is about new AC adapters where the connector springs out with either MagSafe 1 or MagSafe 2 as needed. Who says Apple doesn't innovate anymore?

A cheap Chinese knock off, but Apple branded?

I guess that means no more non-Retina MacBook Pro?

Probably. It sucks because I've skipped several upgrade opportunities to stick with my 2012 15" MBP. I love the machine because I want Retina but can't "upgrade" because the storage options are pretty bad compared to my internal 256SSD/2TB HDD combo.

Maybe they'll surprise us and switch to standard SSD? (Probably not)

maybe

maybe they've come to their senses and finally built a BI-DIRECTIONAL adaptor, that was the real deficiency of the previous one.
