uh wahhh? this was for older style magsafe adapters to be used with the newer slimline macbook airs and retinas. an 85w adapter is an 85w adapter whether it has a magsafe 1 or 2 port on the end of it means nothing....thats like saying dont use the built in charger of the thunderbolt display to charge your macbook.

it was a convenience piece for switchers who had multiple magsafe adapters for magsafe 1 machines, im sure if you call in you can get more.

but something new is in the air, afterall spring is coming

Its not something that is needed clearly because apple discontinued it.
Apple still sell both MagSafe chargers so i don't see the problem at all, those adapters were rubbish anyway

Planned obsolescence. Greed. Sales.

You've got this the wrong way. This only means that those with old power adapters will have to buy new ones to work with their new computers.

What you're doing is like complaining that the floor mats in your 1990 Buick don't fit in your new 2015 BMW.

MagSafe 2 came out in 2012. Who is now buying 3+ year old power adapters that they need to work with current computers?

Please show me another computer company who's current laptop works with their power adapter from 2012 and before.

TBH when you buy a retina machine you get a MagSafe 2 with it, if you want more or a new MagSafe just buy one?

I wouldn't use an old one on a retina machine given the price of the machine, what if something were to go wrong?

Same goes for iPhone chargers - who would buy £1 chargers for a £600 phone?

Some of us already have a charger at each of the locations we frequent and want to protect that investment.

If you buy a new Mac, it will come with a new MagSafe 2 cord. If you have an old Mac, they sell new original MagSafe power cords, so it's not like you have to buy a new Mac. The market for the adapter is small and dwindling...

I get it, you don't like anything Apple does these days... this adapter being discontinued is a ridiculous thing to complain about.

people are upset over this?

the old magsafe connecter is 3 years old. No products have been released using it it since.

Apple was under no obligation to offer an adapter. they did so willingly.

I'm typically a business skeptic and question business motives, but come on, this is like the lightning connector issue again. sometimes, change is necessary to advance technology

Needed for the ACD and TBDs

I realize that the world is (eventually) moving to 4K, 5K or whatever displays, but I still use my 24" ACD with my 2013 rMBP, and it's all the monitor I want or need right now and into the foreseeable future. I just bought three spare adaptors for the built-in power cord on the display because they don't seem to have great longevity, although I haven't had any issues so far.

Apple still sells the 27" ACD and TBD. I can't see how they can discontinue this item without replacing it with something equivalent, so long as they are selling these displays.

I'm hopeful that the TBD gets replaced, because I'd love to get one on blowout. Even the $799 refurb price is too high given how much display technology has moved since 2011. But if I get one, I'd still need the adaptor.

Hopefully this is a sign of a revamped Thunderbolt Display coming soon to an Apple Store near you.

Would have been a nice thought 2 years ago when they should have revamped the Thunderbolt Display. They're still selling that thing with USB 2.0 ports for full price. Shameful.

Just because you can't purchase it off the online Apple Store, doesn't mean you can't order it as user-replaceable part from AppleCare.

Thunderbolt display owners are safe until support is dropped.

Me when I bought a 27" Thunderbolt Display on Monday. Plus I do have plenty of the old power supplies laying around that I use when I travel, etc. vs buying a second MagSafe2 power supply. Eventually they'll die and I'll have to upgrade, but until then I'll keep using the adapter.

Haha.... yeah.....

But sadly, I was just looking for a second adapter for a Macbook Pro Retina at Staples a couple weeks ago and found out none of their retail locations out here stock a MagSafe 2 AC adapter. They only sell the original MagSafe models. So I guess someone shopping there would also need to buy one of these adapters to pair up with it.

I actually like the old MagSafe better because it doesn't fall out so easily. Of course, that wouldn't work with new Mac laptops because they're too light.

Apple was selling the old 2012 MacBook Pro with MagSafe 1 until pretty recently.

Apple was selling the old 2012 MacBook Pro with MagSafe 1 until pretty recently.

And it came with the correct magsafe adapter to be able to charge your MacBook pro

I think I know why

I have gone through several of the adapters. They seem to last a few months and then fail. My guess is that Apple is discontinuing because both the need is going down and the adapter is unreliable. . . .

Has anyone else had the issues that I've had?

Here's a different scenario for discussion sake:
I purchased an extra 2010 Macbook Pro power supply to keep one at work and have one with me at home. I sold my 2010 MBP and purchased a 2014 MBP-Retina. I now have an extra 2010 MBP power supply with an old Magsafe 1 connection. I need this adapter in order to use my MBP-Retina at work with my old back-up supply. With out this, I'll have to purchase another Magsafe 2 Power Supply which cost a lot. CRAPPY!

Exactly. This is news because it signals that a new 4k TBD is coming. Makes sense to pair it with new rMBA announcements.

I use this adaptor to charge my rMBP at work hooked up to the 24" ACD. Just convenience so I don't have to bring my power brick to work.
Poor old ACD has to sit a foot further away from me than the rMBP so I don't notice all the pixels. Unbelievable how we were all so comfortable with such low resolution not long ago.

Do pay attention:

This isn't about $80 power adapters being made obsolete after 3 years.

This is about $1000 displays being made obsolete after 3 years - or sooner if you lose a tiny part.

The Apple Thunderbolt Display and LED Cinema Display have a built-in MagSafe 1 power supply (one of the justifications for spending an arm and a leg on a display) that requires one of these to connect to current MacBooks.

Yes, ATDs bought in the last few years include one - but it is easily lost. Older ATDs and LED Cinema displays didn't include one. When I upgrade my 2011 MacBook I can cope with buying a new spare power adapter, but I'd rather like to keep using all the features of my display, thanks.

but you haven't proved how your display will no longer function without the converter.

the display already came with the compatible device power device. are you throwing away the bundled power adapter in favour of one that did not come with the display?

am I missing something?

Very strange. Maybe it's a mistake. Maybe they've come up with a different type of adaptor that's coming out soon.

If new 12" MBA is introduced next week (although most expect only a refresh on existing MBAs), it's entirely plausible. A single MagSafe converter for MagSafe 2 and new USB 3 type C-based Macs.

Terrible! Why discontinue this product without updating the products it supports???? I dont understand Apple sometimes, SMH, I love Apple but if this is true, this is pitiful.

Going to release MagSafe to magsafe2 and usb c adapter together. This is why they are discontinuing the old package. You heard it here first...
Bundling the old adapter with a different new in one single package? Really?

You might have heard it here first from me but Apple has been rather "unbundling" as of late ;)

(see Mac mini HDMI to DVI adapter, world travel adapter kit, etc...)

Not sure how that would affect the 13" classic pro as this adapter does nothing for the classic.

Its the last Mac that uses MagSafe, no Magsafe 2 isn't it?

----------

Yes! Finally, that laptop dies. I feel bad for all the people who have bought that in the past couple years..

I got one in 2012 because I was desperate to switch to Mac, but now my needs have evolved and I've got a little more money so can afford to upgrade to a decent Mac :)

I'm glad I got a couple when I did, they're convenient and seem to have a stronger magnet than the newer one without the adapter. Not sure why they switched from the barrel style back to the original shape though.

maybe they've come to their senses and finally built a BI-DIRECTIONAL adaptor, that was the real deficiency of the previous one.

The current (now discontinued) adapter IS bi-directional

but with a better screen (the current one is too glossy) would be nice.

And thinner
And less heat output
And USB 3.0

A 5K display is foolish since no Macs until late 2015 (and even then only a few) could run that. 4K will just put strain on most graphics cards to run scaled or full res at 27" and a larger display may be too big for many users.

I want a 27" 1440p like the current one with the enhanced display that the iMac's got in 2012 and updated iOS.
