It would be nice if a new Thunderbolt display was 16:10 (say, 2560 x 1600) instead of 16:9. I know this is a lost cause, but I really prefer the 16:10 size. And my Macbook Pro screen has that aspect ratio, so a 16:10 external display would be a better fit.

"Investment" ?

Some of us already have a charger at each of the locations we frequent and want to protect that investment.

Do you think that "investment' is appreciating or depreciating ?

(Sorry - I apologize for being negative.)

I think anyone who needed this would have bought it by now. I bought two for both of my old power adapters, and use them happily with my rMBP in several locations. They pretty much stay permanently on the adapter's plug. Apple was smart and made the magnet stronger on the adapter side so it always stays on the cable.

I wouldn't be surprised if whatever stock is left lasts a very long time.

I'm still using a non-Retina MacBook Pro, and was planning to pick up one of these with a new laptop in 2017 so that I can continue to use my old adapter if needed. I guess I'll take a trip to Amazon now...

There is a lot of people upset about the possibility of a $10 adapter being discontinued that basically only allows you to use MagSafe 1 chargers with MagSafe 2 devices. I would suspect that most of the people buying Apple laptops these days either don't have older MagSafe 1 chargers around or don't need more than the one charger that comes with the machine.

The only product in Apple's lineup that is still shipping with a MagSafe 1 charger is the Thunderbolt display, and even then it's not a requirement that you use the charger built into the display with your laptop. You can always charge the laptop with a regular MagSafe 2 charger and leave the MagSafe 1 connector dangling if you couldn't get the adapter.

Regarding the reliability of the adapter, I've had mine for around 6 months now on my Thunderbolt display and I haven't had a problem. I don't even think the adapter has come off since I setup the display. It might be a concern if this was on the charger that I have in my bag for traveling, but I have a MagSafe 2 charger in there.

I wouldn't -- you don't even know if whatever laptop Apple is selling in 2017 will even support MagSafe 2. If the rumors about the new Airs are correct, it seems increasingly likely they won't.

You got me on that, but if the MacBook Pros in a few years still use MagSafe 2, I'd rather be out $10 for an adapter to use with my old MagSafe 1 than to be out the $79 of a whole new MagSafe unit...

I've got two of these. I keep one in my laptop bag in the event I need to use an older power adapter and another that lives on my Cinema Display. I guess I'll have to take extra care to make sure I don't lose them now. (They're easy to lose. I've already had to replace one.)

the display already came with the compatible device power device. are you throwing away the bundled power adapter in favour of one that did not come with the display?

am I missing something?

Yes - the magsafe adapter is not bundled with the display - it is built in to the display. There is a captive lead with a Magsafe 1 on it coming out of the display.

Sure, you can use the adapter that came with the laptop and the display will still work, but one of the Unique Selling Points of the display - one of the justifications for not getting a cheaper 3rd party display in the first place - is the neatness of having the adapter built in to the display.

I, for one, would like Apple to try to be more inclusive to those people that use and advocate for their systems. They aren't, really and it is a very sad day.

They are basically stating that you must buy a new AC Adapter instead of using your old one. A lot seems to be going 'wrong' in the apple camp lately and that opinion is coming from a guy who has been using Apple since 88.

Love their products, but stop sticking it to us. I would rather buy the $10 adapter than the $80 one.

"Apple has quietly listed the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter as discontinued ..."

I'm surprised they handled this quietly. I expected a big announcement.

Something can be an "investment" without appreciating monetarily.

My 2001 Accord definitely didn't appreciate it, but I definitely got more than $23,000 worth of value out of it between 2001 and 2014 when I sold it.

The $140 or so I spent on power adapters to have one permanently at my desks at home and work has definitely been worth not having to deal with the hassle of pulling the power adapter out of my bag every time I need to plug in at either location. :)

I'm glad I was able to spend $20 to keep that going with the new machine, instead of another $140.

Clearly the "Spring Forward" event is about new AC adapters where the connector springs out with either MagSafe 1 or MagSafe 2 as needed. Who says Apple doesn't innovate anymore?

and you will be able to charge your MBPs by attaching the Apple watch.

Gives you 5 hours with heavy use I just read.

Also, a convenient place to store the watch, instead of having it always on the wrist.

These guys are good.

The MagSafe converter is not discontinued. It's being rebranded MagSafe Sport which will be introduced alongside the Stainless Steel MagSafe and the Solid Gold MagSafe Edition at the Apple event in San Francisco.

The only people buying MBs today that don't have MagSafe 1 chargers are Switchers (from PCs or desktops). MagSafe is nine years old, I don't think many people still use a 9+ year old laptop.

And I personally had two chargers for my laptops since I got my first one in 2000. And that expanded quickly into three chargers (home, office, parents). In short, everybody that commutes with a laptop likely has two chargers.

Me when I bought a 27" Thunderbolt Display on Monday. Plus I do have plenty of the old power supplies laying around that I use when I travel, etc. vs buying a second MagSafe2 power supply. Eventually they'll die and I'll have to upgrade, but until then I'll keep using the adapter.

You already have adaptors so what's the issue? Seems those that need them have bought them. I'm sure current sales aren't enough to justify continued production of the things. It's not as if people are buying new original MagSafe adaptors at this point and need to update.
