So my strategy will be to call the night before they close, get an indication of whether or not a shipment came in, and go from there.

Most Apple store workers seem clueless as to inventory and shipments. Granted if you get one on the phone that does know, do you really think he/she will be honest with you about a received shipment?

W14th St NYC got plenty of stock this morning. Hundreds of people were standing in line at 9:00 and employees said everyone is guaranteed to get one. I got two 64GB AT&T model which is exactly what I want.

Any one was in other store in NYC? Please post the stat

I was just a few miles from you in Nassau County, Long Island, and our Apple stores got nothing this morning. Maybe tomorrow? Although its going to be a cold, rainy morning tomorrow and I'm dreading having to wait outside again.

I was told yesterday, in store, that the Charlotte Apple store was opening an hour early to sell ipad2s this morning. I got there early (45 minute drive) and was first in line only to find out that we were lied to yesterday. There were plenty of upset people standing there this morning. I wan't the only one that was told that.

At Apple Store in Oaks Mall (Thousand Oaks, CA). I'm about the 15th out of 17 people. Next to an off-duty Apple employee who says they're opening an hour early (still only 8:20 on the west coast). Still waiting to hear from someone inside. I have hope.

I was at the 5th Av store around 8.30 and the line went around the block, didn't bother to get into the line since up to 9 am the employees were "clueless" of whether there were going to be any iPads today.

How long was the line when you left?

Oh, this is CRAZY! So they open early and then they don't even have iPads? I realize some stores did, but it seems like the majority didn't.

I'm so glad I opted not to go today.

It's time to just order and wait it out.

Apple store Mission Viejo is receiving a shipment this morning of 28 models, some wi-fi and Verizon 3G only, no ATT. They dont know what else is coming this week. They said to show up each morning to see what the status is. Best bet is to come around 6ish each morning if anybody really wants one. Best of luck

I hear ya; almost went to the local store myself (which had none at opening). Will order online and hope the more dedicated shoppers get theirs early at a store and cancel their online order. :)

Pioneer Place did not receive a shipment and isn't opening early today.

I stopped in on my way into work, hopeful, but they aren't opening at 9 as I had been told yesterday because they didn't recieve any shipments yesterday.

The employee I spoke with also said that they are not holding shipments to sell the following day as has been mentioned here. He just said I should call and check in later to see if they had arrived.

Waiting, 7th in line @ Arrowhead Mall Apple Store, Peoria AZ.

I really wonder about employee statements like this, as there are numerous conflicting reports. The possibilities that I can imaging are: 1) the employee is really clueless and just making it up or was told wrong info, 2) each store sets their own policy and the employees are aware, 3) Apple corporate retail +/- the distribution centers decided who and when they get a shipment

Apple Store Pioneer Place (Portland, OR) opening an hour early this morning - no stock.

Washington Square is in the same boat.

FedEx (Apple's main shipping company) delivers starting closer to 10am in most locations.

I'm pretty sure Fedex does not necessarily handle Apple store stock deliveries. There are certainly other Apple deliveries that are not routed through Fedex.

employees don't know Shi!! about stock shipments. They lied to make you go away. until the truck gets there you or them have NO idea what they're getting.

Century City has none this morning, they opened an hour early. Santa Monica had none and opened at their regular time.

I spoke with an employee at the CC location and it seems pretty clear that opening an hour early means jack. They are deciding to open earlier without knowing whether the shipment they will get will contain any.

A few posters on AppleInsider are reporting that their local Apple stores are telling them that shipments are sold at the time of arrival. And that 9 AM is simply just the new opening time during the iPad 2 rollout and not meant for "relaunches".

This makes more sense to me. It also sucks because it means that it makes it that much harder to find the device you want.
