I believe Tim Cook said in an interview on Monday that it would be available in stores today. When Tim said you could order Monday and they ship Friday, it was assumed stores wouldn't have any stock until the following week. So I preordered, it is still PFS, and I can walk into any Best Buy or Apple Store tomorrow and just grab one. Waste of money and resources on Apple's side, needed to be much clearer about availability.
I don't understand why people preordered this. It's not a phone. The demand is not that high. Just buy it on the website for in-store pickup and go get it. I just did and will pick mine up over my lunch break.
Not everything is like an iPhone release where supplies are constrained for months.![]()
No, you assumed that. Many of us were well aware that they'd be in store on Friday as has been the case with iPads, iPhones, MacBooks and other devices when they begin shipping.
Has anyone actually walked into a Best Buy and picked one up?
Just called my Best Buy and they said they are only taking pre-orders, I said that's all I need to know and they hung up on me.
Yet my preorder from Monday has yet to show any movement
I got mine this morning in an Apple Store and I've been using it since.
Honestly though, I'm a bit frustrated with Apple. I used to love pretty much anything they put in front of me. After using the Watch for a few days it left me thinking "meh" - their first product that I actually returned. And now Apple TV 4 is a bit of a disappointment as well. It - in many ways - simply does not feel ready.
The remote is so small that it feels uncomfortable to use after a little while and I seriously hope you never have to use the on-screen keyboard as it is even worse than previous ones. The rest of the UI feels (although it looks better) a lot like using the old one.
Siri feels extremely limited, but it's pretty much the only way (other than using the on screen keyboard) to access the universal search. If you browse through movies in the store it won't show you whether they're available on Netflix - you have to use Siri to look for it. And there are plenty of bugs as well. For instance I was looking for "Gravity", which Siri understood correctly, yet didn't show in the results. Only when searching for movies with Sandra bullock it shows gravity as a result.
Also I was unable to purchase anything in the store the first few times I tried. And iTunes extras seems to be gone for a lot of movies, that on ATV 3 had that feature.
For almost three times the price of ATV 3 it seems as though Apple still has A LOT of work to do to get this right. The future of television is not here yet... In fact, if this is the future of tv, I'd rather stick to the past.

What does the shipping status on the Apple website say?I ordered mine on the Apple Store for delivery next week and just received notification that UPS is bringing it today. So free shipping and first day delivery. Can't ask for more than that.
Fact is, you assumed it would be in stores Friday. There was no official word from Apple that it would be. Only difference between you and those that assumed otherwise is your assumption turned out to be the right one. Even when orders went online Monday, Apple didn't guarantee Friday delivery with the expedited shipping option. It stated Oct 30th - Nov 3rd. So stop acting like Apple didn't make this launch confusing compared to past ones. They never announced what day the Apple TV would be available to purchase in store like they have all the other products that you mentioned above.
Not to be harsh, but an easy Google search (like I just did) would've retrieved the info you were looking for. Here's the direct link. http://www.apple.com/shop/help/returns_refund
According to the return policy from Apple you can return an item purchased from Apple to any Apple retail store. You will be refunded with the same method of payment you used to make the purchase. If the purchase was with an Apple gift card you will be refunded with a gift card. You cannot chose the method of refund.

I wound up ordering using my Amex points via Best Buy. Today it let me order even though it was listed as coming soon on the Amex site. Hopefully it won’t be delayed too much (vs in store pickup.)
