At the day of release - aside from some online games - what will the new AppleTV do, that your existing Gen2/3 AppleTV won't? Truth is - not much. Both will stream your shows from iTunes, your iPad or iPhone. It will still get the same shows as the current batch of AppleTV's, and until Apple announces the Program Bundle that has been rumored for years - there is really no overwhelming reason to jump on this product and trash the existing AppleTV products.

Or am I missing something?

This has always been the case. Faster shipping has always been available for preorders. Most people that have preordered before just know it's not necessary because we'll get it on launch day with free shipping. I've always skipped the extra shipping and chose the free option and always get it on the day the item came out. I am pretty sure this is how this is going to work as well. Mine is preparing to ship now and I chose free shipping. I'm hoping it will be on my doorstep Friday evening after I pre-sign for it tomorrow.

You guys/gals are acting like rookies here.

The problem, in this case, is that you had to pay EXTRA to get the device shipped to you the same day it would be available in stores. This has not been true of recent iPhone, iPad, etc., releases -- by pre-ordering online, you could receive your device the same day it would be available in stores with NO surplus charge for "rush" shipping.

I am sure there will be plenty of cool things in the Appstore on launch day (maybe even a nice fart app with some visuals) ... developers are already busy submitting stuff - and worst case, I could just play with siri to find movies to watch (she might not find what I want - but will sure have some funny suggestions)

Great, I just payed 18 ****ing dollars for before noon shipping when I ordered so I could have it Friday .....an hour before this story came out

I will say it time for Apple to redo the ordering/preordering process....I think it would be great if they did something like if you live within 30 miles of an Apple Store you can reserve for pickup during your pre order (and those outside the range can only have it shipped)

Don't be shocked if overnight orders arrive on Thursday instead of Friday. Apple often under promises on delivery dates.

If this is true, and I paid for overnight shipping on something that will be available in the stores before I get my shipment, then shame on Apple. I mean, who decides these things? They couldn't let everyone know before Wednesday? The products have to be in store already so they can set them up on display. The least they could've done was to release in stores NEXT week, not this week. Guess that'll teach me.

Hmm, maybe I should have gotten the smaller one. If the App Thinning/dynamic purge thing works, there shouldn't be a big difference in performance between the 32/64. Oh well.

Actually, Saturday October 31 is the last day of October, not Friday :)

So they could have gotten away with making it available on Saturday (not sure if they have had a Saturday release day)

Mac OS 10.1 was released on a Saturday. I remember them handing the free update out upstairs in the old Tekserve space with several Apple employees present.

Do we have to pay anything for return shipping if you cant reject the shipment?

Mine is also changed to preparing for shipment but the delivery date is Nov 3 to 5. I chose free shipping. However, if I order now on apple.com, the delivery date is Nov 2 ~ 4. ???.. I'm hoping it will be on my doorstep Friday.

Would have been nice to know the other day. I wouldn't have ordered online had I known this. Apple needs to fire the person in charge of these releases. Apple Watch release was screwed up too. What is going on with Apple lately???

Clearly you should be the one in charge Apple then.
Since this is the way releases are always as previously stated.

You all that hard up to get it that soon that you can't wait an extra couple days for it arrive by delivery since you've already pre-ordered it? Did you guys as kids open presents on Christmas Eve because you couldn't wait till the next morning? LOL

I hope you're not disappointed once you get it all hooked up and turn it on.

I just cancelled my online order set for Mon-Wed next week in the hopes of picking one up in-store this Friday. Taking a bit of a chance with potential in-store sell outs vs guaranteed shipment. Not to mention the possibility that 9to5Mac is wrong. We'll see.

The main reason I decided to go in-store is that I have Apple gift cards that don't work with online orders.

I was apple to use a Apple Gift Card online for my ATV4 order.

By the time you pay the duty on it and get it shipped to you, you'll get it later and pay more.

How could you not have known that? Every time they release a new product with a pre-order the shipping data for release day is the day you can get it in the store. This is true of the iPad, iPhone, MacBook, iMac, and every other Apple product.

In the past, Apple shipped new products so that everyone got it on the same day as it was launched in the stores. This time, you only get it the same day if you paid for next day shipping.

The products you're referring to that arrived same day as release were FAR more expensive. At minimum they cost 4x what the most expensive Apple TV does. I can see why they wouldn't bother to spring for the 2-day shipping on the Apple TV and instead charge a little for it.
