What exactly was screwed up with the appleTV release? It was always the way that pre ordered arrive the same day as in store sales start (except the one well announced iPhone release where pre-orders started on the release day ... and everybody cried foul play since it was so unusual). But I agree that the appleWatch release was somewhat (very) different.

What's different is the charge for express delivery. Typically online orders arrive the same day as it's available in store without having to pay a $17 shipping upcharge.

Pick one up Friday, return the one you get Monday.

And effectively waste all that time schlepping back and forth from the Apple Store? Either way it's a loss. Apple really dropped the ball on this one. All they had to do was say: "APPLE TV AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDERS MONDAY 10/26 AND AVAILABLE IN STORES ON FRIDAY 10/30." Seriously, how hard is that? They essentially robbed the people who paid extra for expedited shipping.

This is how every Apple release for years and years has been. It's your own fault for not being smart enough to recognize that if the release day for online orders is Friday then they will go on sale at the Apple Store on Friday also. This has been the case with the iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook.......

Funny how you excluded the Apple Watch from your comment... guess it is because the Apple Watch didn't release in stores the same day as it release online. Hence why I wasn't about to assume the Apple TV would be available in-store the same day. If Apple doesn't officially announce a date, I'm not going to assume it. I guess it is my fault... </s>

Tim, I can swing by on Saturday, please hold one for me please :)

Very excited to replace my living room ATV with the new one. Looking forward to seeing what apps come out. Will keep the ATV3 in the bedroom since I do not anticipate playing in bed, just watching stuff as I fall asleep. However, if the interface turn out to be all that, then maybe I will upgrade the bedroom as well.

Can't wait to stream 4k material. Oh wait, I forgot Apple is stuck in the year 2010.

Less than 10% of US households have 4k. Far less then that outside the US. Apple will go to 4k when 4k has decent traction in the market.

No, no, no. You have NO idea of Friday in store availability. Those that chose in store are taking a chance. They may or may not get one. It's always this way. Those who chose to pay a few bucks for Friday delivery will almost certain get it then. It's a choice. It's far from robbery. Will you be the first to yell and scream if you go to the store on Friday and they don't have one for you?

I don't see what the annoyance is about. As I said on another thread, this wasn't a preorder. Nowhere on the site or in Tim Cook's comments did it say it was a preorder with a specific launch day. Everyone is still getting the product when they were told they would get it. So I don't see what all the complaining is about. I suppose it would have been nice for them to announce "available for order Oct 26 and in store October 30th" but I'm happy waiting for my delivery. With my luck, if I had've waited for it to be in stores it would have been mid November.

Sold out vs not available at all are two different things. They had them here locally at 2 of our stores on launch day but they sold out very quickly.

Different story here and I know it happened elsewhere too since many people were unhappy about that launch. While demo units were set up in store, the employees would tell customers to go online and order it. They weren't sold out. They just weren't being sold in store at launch. I went to Best Buy and picked up a Macbook the same day after I had walked into the Apple Store and was instructed to order online.

Unbelievable that you didn't know this.

What is unbelievable is Apple not giving clear release info beforehand. Yes, in the past, Apple has announced Mac updates without warning - but they were at least available to purchase right away both online and in-store. With iPhone and iPad, they usually give a heads up a week or two in advance. With Apple Watch, they gave a heads up in advance but limited sales to online only. So on Monday when they make the new Apple TV available to order online with no clear release date other than "delivery between Oct 30th - Nov 3rd" and no option to do in-store pickup, yeah I'm going to play it safe and order online vs taking my chances that it will be available in-store on Oct 30th because they never said it would be available in-store on Oct 30th.

Glad I canceled my order on Monday lol. Canceled it twice . Couldn't make up my mind. Although Apple did charge me. Hopefully I see a refund by tomorrow.

But you don't know that it will actually be available in the store. What would you say if you cancelled your order (or didn't place one) and got to the store only to find them sold out?

I really think people need to get a little bit of a grip here. This is a new home media streaming toy. It's not something that you need to treat your cancer before it spreads. Waiting a few days will likely not endanger your health.

I hope 9-5-mac was wrong, and all the units are going to pre-orders and not the stores for general sale. I'm still getting my unit (hopefully) by Friday. So, I'll roll with it.

But if 9-5-mac is right, then I think whoever Apple has hired to handle logistics should be fired. Not cool to give people the impression that they had to pre-order to get it right away, and then in the last two days to change their minds and have it in stores anyway.

I have to believe that a large company like Apple would not be so screwed up as they have not a clue when a major product release is coming to the retail stores until a couple days out.
