I needed to order a 2m thunderbolt cable for one of my studio displays and apparently the display is TB3 with a supplied TB3 cable. From what I can gather Apple used to sell a braided 'Pro' TB3 cable but now only sell a TB4 version at a much higher cost.

Anyway I have managed to source an Apple TB3 Pro cable online but think its a bit naughty that Apple has removed any reference to these and only offer the TB4 when the new Studio Display is TB3. Is this Apple realising there is a cash grab to be had here, or am I missing something?

Edit: Did not mean to post quote. It's early Monday morning and I haven't had my coffee yet lol

As nice as the ASD is, from the flurry of reviews coming out the past month + the tear downs. In some ways, it seems a bit rushed? It's over designed in some aspects, and then in other aspects it seems like it was overlooked (web camera video quality).

I wonder how soon Apple will have a, from the ground up, engineered ASD with things like a MagSafe power cable... etc...

64GBs of memory in the ASD seems like a time/cost saving move in manufacturing something entirely new from the ground up + supply chain.

I just wonder how much of an investment Apple is willing to make into their displays and whether they see this as good enough? Or just the beginning? I'm hoping it's just the beginning. I think the market desperately needs more ASD, iterative generations of it too.

I would love to see Apple get serious about their displays. I was initially hoping to see something like a 27" M1 iMac screen, ultra slim. I'm not sure what's adding the bulk on the ASD. Not complaining, just wondering... thinking it was the power brick not being external:

I'm clearly missing something, because as far as I know, the 2m Apple TB3 Pro cable was released at $129, same as the current TB4 version. This cable is also no longer available on Amazon, but apparently sold for the same price there too.

The Studio Display is most likely developed as a companion of the Mac Studio.

To clarify -
  • I was able to still buy the Apple TB3 Pro cable (2M) for far less than its original price elsewhere online.
  • If the Studio Display is TB3 (and so is the short cable that comes with it) why doesn't apple still offer the TB3 Pro cable at a lower price?

Could you please tell me where you found it? I see some available at eBay, though.

Here you go:

Its a UK site but its 42% off its original price, which makes it a lot cheaper than Apple's TB4 Pro cables (which you don't even need or get with the Studio Display).

If Apple are continuing to make the black braided 'Pro' style TB3 cables for inclusion with the Studio Display, why don't they also still offer them at longer lengths on their store?

I would buy from these folks. Great quality at a good price.

I do prefer a nylon braided cable. Right now I'm considering the Razer TB4 Cable (2M)

I just did a normal system software upgrade of monitor to "firmware" 15.4 and the monitor bricked itself for over 15 minutes with this on the screen:

Reset everything and waited for a while ... the MacBook kept trying and eventually the upgrade succeeded.

Yeppppp me too. Powering off twice didn't seem to help. Was going to return it but ended up letting it run and when I came back later it was updating (which it eventually succeeded in).

so my new Studio Display finally arrived today. I love it, but I need 2 Modifications on my desk.

1.) Do you know if there's a 90 degree Thunderbolt adapter or Cable? It look so bad with the cable at the desk
2.) I need a 5-7 cm high block under my studio display because it is to low, do you have any good looking ideas?

I believe the largest number of displays Apple has ever offered at once was the Cinema Displays in the mid-2000's. They offered a 20", 23", and 30". After that though they went to offering only a single display before exiting the market in 2016. So while it is possible they will offer three displays simultaneously, it would be a change in strategy. I would also question the viability of offering three displays with prices ranging from $1600 to $7000. Feels like that would be a lot of product for what I would imagine to be a relatively small market (displays over $1500). However, I could see them refresh the XDR. It is 3 years old now which makes it one of the longer runs they have had for a display without refresh or replacement (I *think* the only one that went longer was the Thunderbolt Display from 2011-2016).

Has anyone tried putting a Studio Display in a (27" iMac) carrying case yet? I am guessing even owning such a product is pretty rare, but figured this owners thread might have the best odds of anywhere.

I've traveling with my 27" iMac before (extended nomadic working trip via car) – just using the iMac's box – but that wasn't great. The Studio's box is so also hefty and thick I thought to look for alternatives should I want to bring it along with my MacBook.

Specifically, there are some "soft"-style carrying cases that just wrap the screen with snug adjustable clip fittings and provide a handle. It seems the dimensions should work, other than the lack of the chin. The barely removable power cable may also be a hiccup in terms of transport. I admit the more expensive hard shelled or semi-soft "concealed" cases would offer more protection, but that seems a better fit for someone transporting a lot of gear place-to-place regularly.

Unrelated, everyone with the 2 display setup has me envious. I love the look of the Studio Display one on my desk compared to the oh-so-wobbly LG Ultrafine I haven't sold yet. I used to say "oh, the design of the Ultrafine isn't so bad" but ... it really is. (I am actually using them paired up for now, which is reminiscent of my earlier 27" iMac + Ultafine setup.)

Something interesting I noticed today when the displays were off and natural daylight was coming in through a nearby window. The coatings used in the screens have a slightly different tint to them. One is more green, the other is more purple. Not a problem in any way but interesting nonetheless.

I have the iLugger case, but my Display isn't due for another couple of weeks. I can report back then.

If you're keeping the laptop screen closed anyway, just turn your computer 90 degrees counter-clockwise so the cable is near the wall. ;)

Thanks for your help.
The adapter is ordered and i will Build a stand by myself. I can not find a design that i like
