I am trying to think of use cases for AirPlay on a Studio Display when they will be predominantly connected to a Mac anyway.
I sometimes share the screen of my iPad or iPhone on my Apple TV through AirPlay for showing Memories or my Photos to friends or family, listen to Music etc.

I think as the Studio Display was designed primarily for the Mac, you would just airplay to the Mac itself I guess.

So in your example its iPhone/iPad > Apple TV > TV screen

With the Mac it would be iPhone/iPad > Mac > Studio Display

I'm sorry but it's not true, the SD is also compatible with some iPads, through cable.

The SD has a monitor, just like the MacBook and Apple TV.

Since I can use AirPlay for such devices, I believe I should be able to use AirPlay on the SD too, besides, the SD has also a chip which I suppose it could be used for such purpose.

Also no. ASD doesn’t have Bluetooth nor Wi-Fi hardware.

It might be compatible with other devices and even Windows, but it was most certainly designed with Mac usage in mind. Apple’s new room release make that abundantly clear (while lacking mention of iOS usage entirely):

The all-new Studio Display perfectly complements Mac Studio and also beautifully pairs with any Mac. In a class of its own, it features a gorgeous 27-inch 5K Retina screen, plus sensational camera and audio, delivering that integrated experience Mac users love.

Of course, it doesn’t really matter — like you said it can be used in a variety of uses! And should be — but it is worth keeping in mind that Apple really does see this monitor used with a Mac as the primary driver for the full experience.

That Samsung display is only 4K. Many people still miss that the point of this monitor is that it is 5K. If you don’t feel that having this resolution is important to you than the Apple Studio display is not a product you should be considering.

There are a myriad of 27” 4K displays on the market. I think it is more appropriate to compare this Samsung product to displays in that segment.

AirPlay could implemented later via software?

I don't think there is a software update that could add wifi to a SD.

(Although, as has been pointed out, you can just AirPlay to the Mac attached to it. So it's not a big deal.)

Has anyone had any audio skipping/distortion issues on their Studio Display? If I try to listen to any audio it skips and distorts as it comes out of the SD. When outputted through the Mac Studio speaker it plays perfectly.

No issues on any audio I have played from any source, so far.

Update: Just received the nano texture Apple Studio Display, tilt only. Had it couriered from a local Apple store after seeing stock last night.

First verdict: Unfortunately, nano texture is simply a no-go.

I had opted for it because I work in an office with two huge windows in front and to the side. I use an iMac M1 right now, and the reflections on it are real, albeit not ever deal breakers. Having seen the nano texture in store and not being radically offended by it, I thought it would be a good solve.

Well, it's not. Everything is a shade blurry -- from edges to text -- and it's as if you've got foggy contacts on, and it's just not as crisp. Sitting side by side with my iMac M1, there's no comparison: I want the standard glossy glass for everyday work.

So for the meantime, I will return the tilt nano, after comparing it side by side with a tilt glossy that's arriving on Tuesday from Best Buy to make sure this is the right option.

But honestly? The nano texture was immediately bad enough that I cancelled the nano tilt and height adjustable display order I had ordered on March 8th that was still processing.

Second verdict: Tilt and height adjustable is needed.

I am sitting with tilt only in front of me, and especially with the webcam position, and multiple times I have wished I could bump it up or down a bit. I'm 6'3. Gonna have to get tilt/height model.

Third verdict: I really like everything else, except for Center Stage.

The design is precisely what I've been wanting. Machined aluminum, symmetrical, clean. Even bezels. I'm really happy with it on my desk and I like the extra width relative to my iMac M1. I had the LG 5K and 4K and hated both, especially with bad sleep/wake behavior and ugly design. Love how the black bezels and aluminum relate to the new keyboard and mouse. It looks smart and sharp and happy to have Touch ID on my keyboard again.

Center Stage's behavior was weird on Zoom, and I hated it so much that I had to turn it off in Control Center manually. Whatever, it works.

Fourth verdict: Surprises.

The speakers are night and day better than my existing iMac M1. I know people have had theories about this being a test design of a future iMac, and I could see that. The speakers are shockingly very good for my home office purposes.

Overall: nano is not great, get tilt/height if you can afford it, Center Stage and webcam poor as reported; speakers are fantastic.

Interesting. My VESA-mount nano display is supposed to arrive this week. I want to compare it to the height-adjustment standard ASD I’ve been using, as my home office can get very bright with sunlight in the afternoon. The standard ASD is less glossy than the LG UltraFine 5K was, but reflections are still noticeable.

Just curious what was weird. I've been loving it on Zoom calls. Even though I'm not moving around it zooms (no pun intended) in on me, which I found nice.

I came back from the Apple Store about 3 hours ago after 1 hour comparing, side by side, the Nano Texture with Standard Glass and I feel so relief that I got the Standard Glass and not the Nano. The Nano looks like a regular, $500 4K 32" monitor from LG, period. In fact, I see no difference between my LG 32UN880-B and the ASD Nano Texture. Now the ASD Standard Glass is miles ahead and better than any 4K display I have ever seen, including my beloved LG 32UN880-B. If you are using currently a Standard Glass ASD, I really doubt you are going to find the Nano Texture any better, unless you are working outdoors or your screen is literally facing a window without shades or blinds. Even in the Apple Store floor with that intensive lighting, the Standard Glass looked much better than the Nano Texture. If I need to measure sharpness, I would say that the Nano Texture takes away about 30% to 40% of the sharpness you get with the Standard Glass.

Even without still see the monitor in person, I know I stay away from nano, I prefer the glossy by far due I want the crispy text as possible, and also the height adjustable is almost mandatory for me, I constanly move the height of the monitors.

weird question due I don't have access right now to see the monitor in person, but just to give me an idea of the panel quality of the monitor, the iphone 13 mini that I have is:
  • 2340‑by‑1080-pixel resolution at 476 ppi
  • 800 nits max brightness (typical); 1200 nits max brightness (HDR)
The studio display
  • 5120-by-2880 resolution at 218 ppi
  • 600 nits brightness
that means the iphone looks better?

I love the screen of my iphone mini, I just imagine the same quality on a 27 monitor.

The PPI of the ASD is comparable to the 2012-2020 MacBook Pros. Remember you hold a phone up close. You don’t do the same with a monitor.

You usually view a 27 inch display from 2 feet (~60cm) away. But a phone? It's usually within a foot.

Does anyone know if the Logitech 4K Magnetic Webcam will fit the ASD? I'm assuming so, but curious if anyone has tried it. Also would like to know if it can be angled down quite a bit. I think the ASD webcam is angled too high.
My webcam came in today. I briefly played with it prior to leaving for a weekend trip. It does not stay on the ASD. I think I'm going to use some removable adhesive to adhere it to the top of the display. I do like how the camera has a pretty good tilt range going downward, which solves my problem for the built-in ASD camera being too high.

For video piece, I've gone with the low-cost and low-tech KVM solution of the magnetic USB-C connectors. I have personal M1 MBA and work M1 MBA. I have magnetic USB dongle in each, and then the other end on the TB cable connected to my ASD.

I just unplug from one laptop to the other.

Why do you need a magnetic piece on the ASD port? Can I also ask if your USB-C magnetic dongle supports 5K-60K when connected to your MB and ASD? Are there any limitations? Lastly, which brand is this? Thank you!
