Anyone here use the ASD for both a Mac and Windows machine? I have a Windows machine that I need to use for certain client work. What is the best way to switch between Mac and Windows?
What is your Windows machine? If it has a 10th-gen core processor and a TB3 port you should be good to go. If it is older, but has a TB3 port you might still get it to work, but with some compromises. My work PC with an 8th gen Core works through my TB3 port, but only with a USB-C 3.2 or TB4 cable (that can drop down to USB-C 3.2), and only at 4K, which is fine with me for Windows. The included Apple cable doesn’t work with it.Anyone here use the ASD for both a Mac and Windows machine? I have a Windows machine that I need to use for certain client work. For the second verdict, can’t you just add a display riser from Amazon or something?Update: Just received the nano texture Apple Studio Display, tilt only. Had it couriered from a local Apple store after seeing stock last night.
First verdict: Unfortunately, nano texture is simply a no-go.
I had opted for it because I work in an office with two huge windows in front and to the side. I use an iMac M1 right now, and the reflections on it are real, albeit not ever deal breakers. Having seen the nano texture in store and not being radically offended by it, I thought it would be a good solve.
Well, it's not. Everything is a shade blurry -- from edges to text -- and it's as if you've got foggy contacts on, and it's just not as crisp. Sitting side by side with my iMac M1, there's no comparison: I want the standard glossy glass for everyday work.
So for the meantime, I will return the tilt nano, after comparing it side by side with a tilt glossy that's arriving on Tuesday from Best Buy to make sure this is the right option.
But honestly? The nano texture was immediately bad enough that I cancelled the nano tilt and height adjustable display order I had ordered on March 8th that was still processing.
Second verdict: Tilt and height adjustable is needed.
I am sitting with tilt only in front of me, and especially with the webcam position, and multiple times I have wished I could bump it up or down a bit. I'm 6'3. Gonna have to get tilt/height model.
Third verdict: I really like everything else, except for Center Stage.
The design is precisely what I've been wanting. Machined aluminum, symmetrical, clean. Even bezels. I'm really happy with it on my desk and I like the extra width relative to my iMac M1. I had the LG 5K and 4K and hated both, especially with bad sleep/wake behavior and ugly design. Love how the black bezels and aluminum relate to the new keyboard and mouse. It looks smart and sharp and happy to have Touch ID on my keyboard again.
Center Stage's behavior was weird on Zoom, and I hated it so much that I had to turn it off in Control Center manually. Whatever, it works.
Fourth verdict: Surprises.
The speakers are night and day better than my existing iMac M1. I know people have had theories about this being a test design of a future iMac, and I could see that. The speakers are shockingly very good for my home office purposes.
Overall: nano is not great, get tilt/height if you can afford it, Center Stage and webcam poor as reported; speakers are fantastic.
I know the ASD camera quality is still an issue, but just out of curiosity: Is the built-in camera too high even with Center Stage enabled? My webcam came in today. I briefly played with it prior to leaving for a weekend trip. It does not stay on the ASD. I think I'm going to use some removable adhesive to adhere it to the top of the display. I do like how the camera has a pretty good tilt range going downward, which solves my problem for the built-in ASD camera being too high.
With Centre Stage enabled it pans down to centre you so it doesn't matter if the display is tilted. However when I plug in my work laptop and join a conference call centre stage isn't active and the camera is then tilted back too far.I know the ASD camera quality is still an issue, but just out of curiosity: Is the built-in camera too high even with Center Stage enabled?
Whoops. Probably because there isn't any steel on top of the ASD for the magnet to stick to.My webcam came in today. I briefly played with it prior to leaving for a weekend trip. Thanks, I will check but I believe it is older (than 10th-gen core) tho it has a TB3 port. Maybe I’ll bring my windows laptop to an Apple store along with the appropriate cable. 4K is plenty for me for Windows. What is your Windows machine? I will be downgrading in size from 34 to 27 inches. Considering getting 2 ASDs.No. My 32” is an AOC U32U1, 4K with my resolution at 109ppi. I am a copywriter, so crispy text is important to me.
I have never owned the 6K Pro Display XDR. I have been using an iMac 27” before for years. So let’s see what I think of it.
I wish macOS was a but more intelligent in its handling of two of these things. As with all macs, you can only pick one for sound output, but its I’d hoped Apple would do that thing they do when it comes to their own hardware. If I’m playing something with sound on my left display, it’s really weird for sound to play out of the other one (as its primary).
Also, I’m surprised they couldn’t come up with some option to have one display acting as the left speaker and one as the right.
In conferencing software, the monitors aren’t labelled by macOS as anything meaningful so you have to just try different selections for mic, speakers etc. Again, I’d have hoped macOS would label them according to your display preferences as L and R maybe.
Sorry, no magnetic piece on the ASD port, I just meant it is on the TB cable coming out of my Studio Display. Why do you need a magnetic piece on the ASD port? Can I also ask if your USB-C magnetic dongle supports 5K-60K when connected to your MB and ASD? Are there any limitations? Lastly, which brand is this? Thank you!
Then download the free MultiSoundChanger.app and you can control the volume of that multi-output device from the keyboard too.You can play sound from both ASDs at the same time but you won't be able to control the volume with the Mac volume control. You have to adjust volume with whatever software you are using: Apple Music, TIDAL, Zoom, etc.
You have to go to Audio Midi Setup and "Create Multi-Output Device" then select both ASD.
Having a cat, I already vacuumed the ventilation holes once…The ventilation holes on the top of the display feels like it could be a big issue with dust inside?
My 27” iMac with no holes on the top but when you ”tap” the chin the dust just falls out with no ending in sight?
So with that in mind I just feel like it could be an issue down the road?
For the second verdict, can’t you just add a display riser from Amazon or something?
Yes, it will pan down, but if you move it will track you and people have complained in meetings that it makes them dizzy.I know the ASD camera quality is still an issue, but just out of curiosity: Is the built-in camera too high even with Center Stage enabled?

For those with the height-adjustable version, do you see the cable hole when you put the monitor at the highest?
Possibly, but with the fans running 24x7 when connected maybe it won't be as bad as nothing can really 'settle' - it's one of the reasons I got AppleCare with mine. The ventilation holes on the top of the display feels like it could be a big issue with dust inside?

Yes. Several of us. There is a thread about it here.Anyone having this issue?
I have the same problemAnyone having this issue?
No but it’s a good idea. I think you could use Rogue Amoeba’s Loopback to set up that sort of configuration. Can anyone tell me how Audio is handled with two displays? Does the audio get split into two channels, left to the left monitor, right to the right monitor?
